College is such an important episode for the show. David Chase, the creator, had to fight hard against HBO to let him show Tony killing someone. Before this, "protagonists" in tv didn't really go there. HBO asked if maybe he could order someone to do it, because the audience wouldn't like Tony anymore if he did. But Chase stood firm arguing that the only way the audience would respect Tony is if he whacked the guy himself. Chase won out, and of course this changed the way protagonists were portrayed on TV. I think the episode is the one that really made the show a hit, and is kind of the perfect here's an episode to convince someone to watch the show episode, because it shows Tony trying to balance his family life with his "other" family life.

Pax Soprana is a reference to Pax Romana, the long period of peace in the Roman Empire. from Augustus Caesar's reign in 27 B.C. to Marcus Aurelius' in 180 A.D. Livia Soprano, curiously, shares the same name as Emperor Augustus' wife and trusted advisor, Livia.

"Roman Peace" involved a lot of conquest, expansion, and violence. Pax Romana is the golden age for Imperial Rome. "Pax Romana" is Roman rule, it's what Rome said it gave the conquered people they had just massacred, and they were taxed for it. Hence Junior taxing Hesh as the new boss and killing one of the drug dealer.

It's often said that The Sopranos changed TV, a shift in quality, boundaries, respect for an audiences intelligence. David Chase stood his ground and you have seen the result.

Since you said ya didnt know: Poached Egg - boil a saucepan of water, and add to it 2 tablespoons of vinegar. When it's at a rolling boil, take spoon and swirl the water in the pot. You want to make a 'whirlpool' in the middle. Crack the egg into the middle of the pot/whirlpool. The swirling water will keep the yolk and white together. Cook for 2 mins for runny yolks, 3.5-4mins for firm. That easy! And if ya wanna get super fancy, serve it atop some bacon (or salmon!) on toast. Add hollandaise sauce and you have 'Eggs Benedict'!

Hitman Richard Kuklinski, known as "The Iceman" sometimes used a garotte made of piano wire with a wooden handle on each end. He'd slip it over the victim's head from behind then spin around so he and the victim were back to back, the garotte over his shoulder like Santa Clause with his bag of toys. He'd then lean forward just barely enough to lift the victim's feet off the ground. Being 6' 5" and almost 300 pounds it apparently worked very well.

Absolutely love you two and The Sopranos! For a lot of us, the College episode changed television. That episode let everybody know that The Sopranos was going to be way different than any other show. If people weren't watching it before, they started watching it then. People were getting HBO specifically so they could watch The Sopranos. I had never seen such a deliberate, slow kill on a T.V. show like that before. The HBO prison drama Oz had debuted 2 years before The Sopranos. It had some incredibly brutal moments, but not a lot of us had watched Oz (I watched it years later). So, watching The Sopranos was like getting hit in the face with a sledgehammer, LOL! And it was awesome! I love your discussions on therapy. About 5 years after The Sopranos ended, I began suffering anxiety/panic attacks. I knew exactly what they were because I had seen Tony Soprano have them. I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and put into therapy. A later doctor told me they thought I had Major Depressive Disorder instead of Bipolar Disorder. They are very similar with many of the same symptoms. Anyway, I got into therapy and put on medication. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. And yeah, you develop a deep bond with your therapist. Therapy is the one place where you can be completely open and honest about anything and everything. You trust them and you know that whatever insecurities you have will never be used against you by them because they are there to help you. I've had 4 therapists over the years. 3 were great and I loved them. 1 completely sucked. I can see how patients could develop strong feelings toward their therapists. Luckily, I view my therapists as more like close friends than romantic interests.

in breaking bad the plot is this relentless engine where everything is constantly moving forward. (it's great, don't get me wrong.) there's a lot more breathing room in the sopranos, more time for "down" episodes focusing on the characters. plus breaking bad basically makes you feel for its characters by relentlessly abusing them. you get attached to jesse, but how much of that is because he's put through one hellish thing after another?

one thing i will say about breaking bad is there are a lot more basically good/decent characters in it: hank and marie, walt jr., steve gomez, jane etc. it's * very * hard to find a main or recurring character on the sopranos who isn't at heart a piece of shit, except maybe dr. melfi and charmaine bucco.

The actor on the right at the 21 minute mark is George Loros. He plays, Raymond Curto, one of Tony's Captains. While he has a small role in "The Sopranos," Loros is one of the greatest "Mafia" actors of all time. If "The Sopranos" had been made in the 70's, he would have made a great Tony Soprano. Loros had a reoccuring role in the 70's detective series "The Rockford Files" as Mafia thug 'Anthony Boy' Gagglio. When it comes to characters losing their temper, no one loses their temper better than George Loros. It's a damn shame he's not a household name because he just kills the role every time he plays a tough guy.

Meadow's relationship with Tony hits a brick wall in the college episode. She's becoming an adult and attempts an adult relationship with Tony that immediately hits a brick wall. She realiszes she will never be able to have an honest relationship with him. She begins to see her life as bullshit, as a sham. Her choice now is to reject it, or do what Carmella did and compromise. She can either become Carmella or Charmaine. The ducks flying away are a metaphor for this. Guys I just love your reactions to everything but especially excellent shows like the Sopranos. It just gives me joy to see the give and take of the reactions. Its obvious you guys love each other so much and that is just so refreshing to see. Can't wait to watch all of these. I think 6 great seasons!!

Taxing means you gotta pay tribute to the boss of the family wich was Junior in this episode.. He also asked for back taxes meaning all those years Hesh operated without paying tribute to the boss and 2% of his loan sharking operation every month.. Loan sharking is loaning money with high interested.. I loan you 10.000 bucks and you pay back 15.000 bucks for example..

I don’t know if you read the comments but I watch a few reactors and you two are just wonderful. I enjoy the selection and the honest reactions. I will be joining patreon but a really good movie that I just watched is called About Time, it’s a romantic sci-fi flick that I think you both would love. Thank you for the genuine content.

poach egg is egg boiled directly cracked into a pot of boiling water...egg formation it's very similar to what AJ did, he just didn't crack the shells. gave her hardboiled eggs it's like the simple mix of "why aren't my boiled eggs skinning cleanly?" they're too nice "why aren't my poached eggs forming?" "the egg wasn't new enough and you put no white vinegar in the water" i listen to a lot of grannies talk about eggs.

This is probably a little early for this but not entirely insignificant, but take a mental note of the kinds of women that Tony chooses to have his little side flings with. It comes back in a big way later on in the series. They all have some thing(s) in common that you've already picked up on.

Gun or no gun, it was always going to be hands on with the snitch. That's an unwritten rule with the mob, especially with the boss. Completely premeditated. This correlates with the close and sincere one on one with Meadow. Beautifully done.

I just thought about watching The Sopranos on this app I'm on episode 6 anyway I noticed something crazy happened around 11 minutes when that Jewish guy is telling Tony Soprano about his uncle is taxing him they have this woman walking down the street behind them I noticed her because she got great hips I love the way she shape anyway she's staring at the damn camera which something she's not supposed to be doing she's not paying attention to her feet she trip over something she don't completely fall down but she stumbles it is very noticeable and I know she's embarrassed because she just smiled kind of laughed and kept walking 11 pay attention episode 6 first season
