This episode says so much about Melfi. Imagine the strenght of character to not tell Tony. And on the other end of the spectrum we have Janice, who brought what happened onto herself by stooping so low by stealing the leg, and still called Tony which will force him to get payback.

That episode (S3 E4) to me is why it’s one of the best written tv series ever. Everyone (including myself) wanted Dr Melfi to say yes and tell Tony everything that happened, but David Chase and his staff stayed true to her character, his character and the entire series .

Dr. Melfi saying no to Tony and not validating his worldview that the mobster life is an acceptable and morally justifiable solution to societal shortcomings is my favorite moment in the entire series. To tell Tony about the rapist knowing he would kill the man would have proven to Tony that all that stuff about resisting impulses is bullshit. It would make every single time he tried to say mobsters have to exist because society fails Italians no longer even worthy of a debate in his mind. In his mind, if even the good girl Dr. Melfi can sell her soul for his service then everyone is corruptible. I doubt Melfi would have been able to continue with her career after that as I imagine her sincere belief in her therapy would have been shattered. I love that she was able to reject his worldview and sense of morality and continue on with her belief in rejecting mobster violence no matter how hard it was. It provided a strong contrast to the kind of person Melfi is and the kind of people the Sopranos are, demonstrating that violence is a choice. It made the character for me.

Meadow is a NPD, craving drama just like her grandmother Livia. She had Noah in her room hoping that Tony was coming over with Carmella so she could stir up some drama and create an incident. She knew exactly how Tony would react to Noah, which is why she arranged for Tony to see them together in the first place (it only took AJ a few seconds to figure out what happened at that encounter). She is using Noah to get reactions out of Tony and Carmella.

That thumbnail is appropriate, I'm glad y'all got through episode four, brutal, but it shows Dr.Melfis Professionalism, She did Not want to owe Tony anything, you never want to owe a favor to the Mob, it would compromise they're Dr patient relationship and it would give Tony Power over her, me personally I would have loved for her to tell Tony, Tony destroy that POS and maybe Tony just maybe this once wouldn't want a favor back but that wasn't likely

great reaction to a great episode. that scene is disturbing as hell but the writing (and acting) is so on point and for me the appreciation for that ep only grows with every rewatch or new reaction and discussion i see. melfi taking back control is great once you understand it beyond the surface level and your own initial desire what you want to happen. the scene from 36:22 onwards explains some of it as well. i feel you could write a whole book about that episode

Noah is the lucky one. If he had taken a swing at Tony like he boasted about, Tony has 25+ years of experience using his fists, practice boxing, and hardening his fists on the heavy bag, as well as 150 pounds body weight on Noah. He would have pulverized Noah. And if Noah had taken the first swing, inside Tony's house, it would have been self defense.
@lennyvalentin64856 ай бұрын
Noah and his youthful bravado aside, in an actual brawl he would have been utter toast. I would think though that Tony would have restrained himself, knowing Meadow was in the house. I'm wondering if Tony would have been petty enough to send one of his goons after Noah for swinging at him or not though. Night-time robbery gone awry, something like that. On one hand, troublesome boyfriend no longer an issue. On the other, risk of alienating his own daughter, potentially for life, because Meadow would be more than smart enough to see the connections. Tony's smart too, street smarts especially, but he's also very impulsive and often ignores potential future negative consequences just to have some satisfaction in the here and now, so it could go either way really... Gods, I can't help thinking how fortunate we are James Gandolfini existed so he could play Tony Soprano. His physicality, his hulking frame, large fists and so on (likened with Bluto at one point in the show even), and that incredible, insane acting talent. What a guy... RIP. :(

❤Have you two watched Analyze This yet? De Niro is a mob boss(of course) and he is seeing a psychiatrist played by Billy Crystal. It is another take on the pressures of being a mobster. Analyze That is the sequel 😂

I actually side with Janice on this one. You don't take property from an old person you're caring for, whether they give it to you or not. It belongs to their kids/family.
@lennyvalentin64856 ай бұрын
Well you can have that opinion, but regardless, the gift was given already; someone else can't come along and just take it back. Doing that would be robbery, theft. And especially stealing the prosthetic leg to hold as hostage just seals the immorality of what Janice was doing.

Taking things from vulnerable old people you barely know, while doing a job, is robbery to me. And the only source we have for Olivia giving the records is the thief's word. @@lennyvalentin6485
