You guys had a rocky relationship with Christopher. Sam even said quite a few times she couldn’t stand him. Yet at the end both of you guys were totally shocked & devastated at his tragic & sad ending. Chris was definitely one of the most complex characters in TV history. Truly a testament to the writing & Michael Imperioli’s phenomenal performance.

Tony yells "I get it!" at the end, in the desert. It may very well be the most climactic moment of his entire character arc, leading up to this. The central question since the very beginning of the show has been: can Tony be redeemed? We know he's a murderous, violent, unfaithful gangster, but we've also seen all his other, kinder and more sensitive sides. The hope has been that his therapy sessions can give him the ephinany he needs to turn his life around and save his soul in the end. But throughout the show we come to see how hopelessly futile this all is. Tony's life, identity and entire social circle are all defined by the Mafia. Changing and growing might not be literally impossible for him, but it would require such a massive overhaul of his life that it effectively becomes impossible. Changing and growing is hard, falling back on old habits is easy. Tony's ephinanies come and go, and little by little, his soul is chipped away at by all the increasingly evil shit he comes to do as part of the path he's carved out for himself. Tony killing Christopher, who has been like a son to him, is the final straw that kills the last remnants of whatever soul he has left. He crossed the line into irredeemable evil. And then he proceeds to spend the rest of the episode looking for excuses and rationalizations for why it was morally necessary. But when he gets high in the casino, it finally starts to set in for him. He did it because he is a selfish monster, and Christopher had become too much of an annoyance for him. He kills him and gets away with it, steals his mistress, keeps winning at roulette, and he convinces himself that it's all connected. That the universe is rewarding him for it. He finally decides to completely stop trying and to embrace his ugliest, lowest instincts. This is what he is now, there's no soul left to save. He might as well enjoy himself.

On a psychological level he killed his father. He was like a father to Christopher. But Christopher’s father Dickey was like a father to Tony. Tony realizes the connection and that he severed it. He has to break free from his past that has made him into the monster he is. But that’s only the first big step. Now the work of repairing the soul, the essence and spirt of Tony must begin. Unfortunately we see how that does not happen later.

Just earlier this season, Fat Dom was stabbed to death for calling Carlo gay; last season, Little Paulie got a bottle smashed across his face for the same joke. And we all remember the fallout from the Ginny Sac jab. You guys have commented a lot about how much image matters to all of these men. In one of Christopher's last scenes, we see Paulie make a heinous joke about his daughter that in an earlier season would have led to justified, violent retaliation. But here, everyone collectively laughs in Chris' face because none of them respect him as a man. Really powerful.

“I get it!” Tony finally understanding that he doesn’t need to pretend to have any principles anymore. He killed Christopher. Nothing bad happened to him after it. He was rewarded for it at the roulette table. The universe is uncaring and he can do whatever he wants because it will never matter. It also goes back to his conversation with the scientist at the hospital. There are so many opinions on it that you can have different conversations about it that’s what makes The Sopranos so great!

I always took Christopher killing JT not so much as Chris wanting to hurt somebody because he was mad about what happened with Paulie and the others, but when he tells JT "I'm pouring my heart out" and JT says "You're in the mafia!" it's like he's telling Chris we're never going to be the kind of friends who talk this way. And Christopher realizes he has nobody. His only "friends" are the mob buddies he just saw laughing at a joke about his daughter. He's feeling rejected and alone and he lashes out.

The cap that Christopher wears in his last scenes serves as a callback to his first scene in the show, but there’s a lot further symbolism there - As a movie, as Christopher’s magnum opus, Cleaver serves to Tony consciously, and Christopher on some subconscious level, as a reminder of the resentment between them. It’s about all that Chrissy given and done in order to be “the good son” just to earn Tony’s disapproval; of course what Tony sees is all that he’s done for Christopher just for the kid to hate him. One might say that the movie “cleaved” a wedge between the two. But beyond a stupid pun or a straight-to-DVD movie, meat cleavers hold a lot of meaning for both Tony and Christopher. The Sopranos serves up a revelation about Tony’s condition in the episode “Fortunate Son,” which is also the episode in which Christopher gets made: a young Anthony Soprano once followed Johnny Boy and Junior into Satriale’s, and ended up seeing his father punish the vendor for missing payments by chopping off his pinky finger with a meat cleaver. It’s one of Tony’s first exposures to not just the extreme violence of mob life, but what his own father is capable of. It’s not the last - several of Tony’s exposures to extreme moral depravity come from his father, such as his first hit - but unique about this is that it is one of the few moments where Tony receives clear fatherly approval. In the midst of the fear and confusion upon seeing his dad chop off an innocent person’s finger, Tony is praised for his ability to witness this and not “run away like a little girl.” The lesson here is that to be a man, to be worthy of his father’s respect, to be who he’s meant to be, is to be a violent, domineering criminal. The first image of a blood-spattered meat cleaver, though, comes in the very first episode, and Tony is nowhere in the picture, although he’s surely on Christopher’s mind as he shoots waste management rival Emil Kolar through the head in hopes of moving up in the ranks, having placed a few lines of coke on a meat cleaver as a distraction for the unfortunate first murder victim of the series - and of Christopher’s. For both Tony and Chrissy, the blood-spattered cleaver symbolizes a loss of innocence, alongside a key inciting incident along the path that they are on today, a never-ending search for respect and acknowledgement and approval through the fulfillment of “being a man.” Leading up to Christopher’s last breath, we see through Tony’s eyes this deep father-son conversation about Kaitlin and the important things in life, we have pretty telltale signs (the fidgeting, the loss of focus) that Christopher is using again, and we have this hat, steeped in meaning. And then, of course, we see this terrible crash that should have killed both of them - and as Tony notes, would have killed Kaitlin. The repeated bringing up of the baby seat is on one hand in ridiculous taste, but on the other, I have to give him props that Christopher would have been a severely damaging influence to that child’s life. Of course, Tony knows this well because of how well-acquainted he is with the damage that Johnny Boy has done to his - and the damage that he’s done to his own sons - one of which is very imminently in this scene going to receive a lot more damage by Tony’s hand. Tony’s drug suspicions are confirmed when Christopher says he’ll never pass a drug test, and we can see the disgust on Tony’s face at his request not to call 911. As Tony’s eyes flick back and forth and Chrissy repeats himself - the meat cleaver, Christopher, the demolished baby seat - all of the subconscious associations we’ve been seeing this whole run of episodes are surely coming up: his father and the dark path he set him on, his father’s emotional and often physical absence within the home, Tony’s own dissatisfaction - unspokenly shared with Christopher - with the path and the cycle he’s in, the desire and the inability to change, the fatherly influence that he’s aimed to have, the cycles that Tony’s perpetuated within his family, those which Christopher may now perpetuate with his own. Though he shuts down Paulie’s question later in the episode, has he truly done right by Chrissy? In “Walk Like a Man,” the unfortunate son pretty much says absolutely not. But whatever the case, Tony has come dangerously close to murder when confronted with these unpleasant questions before, with Bobby, Paulie, and maybe even Hesh. Now, in this moment, Christopher is perhaps the perfect manifestation of everything wrong about Tony’s life. That’s one of the darkest things about this murder - it doesn’t seem to be a matter of calculation or even of some strong emotional response, it’s as if he just knew what to do next, almost instinctually. And with that, Tony’s “biggest blunder” has been purged and the weight that’s been dragging on him these past few episodes - the weight of his father, of his own life, of the lives he hopes to mold - is, for a time, lifted. “He’s dead.”
@Bawookles

"Kennedy and Heidi" is the most shocking episode of the series for me. That Tony could kill Christopher like that was always so shocking to me. And then that incredible ending with Tony yelling "I GET IT!" at the sun when it "blinks" at him, which is throwback to the blinking searchlight during his coma at the beginning of the season. Tony has an epiphany about life and death and it brings him to tears.... but will it last? Christopher is a tragic character, and is more like Tony than Tony realizes. Christopher was born into this mafia life, and just like Tony, it eats away at him and makes him miserable because there is no real way to escape it. Christopher self-medicates with substance abuse and dreams about being a filmmaker, but he could never leave the mafia life, and of course it killed him in the end.

I think the Comfortably Numb Song, tied into why Tony killed him. "The child has grown, the dream is gone". And we see Tony processing that's how he feels about him now. Everything he had with Chris was gone, so Tony could and would kill him, since there was nothing left with him. He went to Vegas, to sleep with someone Chris was sleeping with. Because I believe its what he wanted to do with Ade and didn't get the chance. So he's going to screw the next best thing of his. It just speaks to how evil and disgusting Tony has become. EDIT: I think it was revenge for Chris screwing Julianna Skiff (real estate agent - and him not screwing Ade). It's petty, evil, and fits to what Tony has become. A real piece of crap.

It’s nuts how many layers are in this show. At first you think it’s about a man trying to change. Then you realize it’s a show that slowly reveals the monster that is Tony Soprano. Its weird because if you notice everytime a family member leaves or gets killed we see more of the monster that Tony is. When Meadow left he became more violent in his home life, when Christopher died I believe it was the final act that completely dehumanized Tony Soprano in the eyes of the audience. Remember this was someone Tony considered family it was his own blood yet Tony killed him for simply being an inconvenience and felt nothing. And James Gandolfinis performance is like nothing I have ever seen. I think this might just be the greatest performance I have ever seen in any media. The amount of depth that be introduced and the amount of emotion he could convey with just his face was extraordinary. RIP James Gandolfini. I truly don’t think we will see another human being like him.

Someone may have already clarified this - The reason Tony killed Chris was because Tony was ALWAYS concerned that Chris might “flip” due to being involved in drugs and alcohol (which is basically what happened to Adriana- due to covering up the murder in the club, the FBI had her by the balls). Remember when Chris first went into rehab after the intervention (can’t remember what season), Tony said to Chris “If it was anyone else……” basically saying to Chris if you were not my nephew, you’d be dead for this. So- when the accident happened, Tony saw it as an opportunity to finally relieve himself of the stress of what Chris might do in a drunk/high state and killed him. When Tony goes to Vegas and starts “winning”…. He believes in his mind that his good luck is coming back BECAUSE Chris is dead. That’s why Tony says “He’s dead” at the roulette table…..and when he is in the desert in the final scene shouting “I get it!”…… He is basically saying “I understand now”

My take on Tony's descent is that he hates his life so much because of everything he has become, he's projecting it into the people around him. With Paulie, he wanted to kill the person that is closest to his father, which is to say, the reason he's in the mafia to begin with. This time, he just refuses to see Christopher with some empathy even though both of them are explicitely connected because of the mental health aspects, and when he kills him, he's metaphorically killing the part of himself that is in pain and seeks relief in therapy.

I'm not completely sure about Tony yelling "I GET IT!" in the desert, but the way I see it Tony has realized that the only way he succeeds and prospers is by being evil, hence the devils face in the casino he is so fixated with, to make it in the Mafia he has to be ruthless and unforgiving against people who have or could potentially cause him trouble in the future. Christopher has given Tony a fair amount of problems but killing your nephew who you deeply love is practically unthinkable for everybody except for people that are evil. So Tony accepts the fact that he has the be the bad guy to give himself the best life possible in his situation.

Tony had had enough of Christopher for sure, but he *was* going to call 9-1-1 until Chris told him he'd never pass a drug test. That's the straw that broke the camel's back in Tony's mind; the FBI getting their hands on a recovering Chris as he goes through months of recovery (and withdrawals) in the hospital. Christopher was warned when he came out of rehab that that was his one and only second chance, and he was still given several more after that.

Christopher’s downfall was that Italy trip in Season 2. Once he got introduced to hard drugs, it started his decline from his intended trajectory…which was Tony’s number 2….high up in the family. He never fully recovered from his addictions.

Anytime someone just calls everything out for what it is, especially using the word Mafia, it’s a showstopper. Tony and Co. obfuscate so much, using words and justifications to avoid being honest with themselves. The therapist Carmela sees asks “The Mafia?” when she tells him Tony’s crimes are “organized in nature” and she breaks down crying. Meadow calls Tony “Mr. Mob Boss” and he becomes very dark and menacing towards her. Ralphie calls out Tony’s hypocrisy over his feelings for Pie-Oh-My when they hurt people for a living, Tony kills him. JT yells at Chris for being in the Mafia (ie an environment that will never allow him to reach any sort of peace) and Chris shoots him.

This is about the point in the series where i personally gave up on Tony. Which it honestly should’ve been far sooner, because something happened to him after getting shot by Uncle Junior. I think a lot of people forget something very important in the Tony/Christopher dynamic. Everyone remember Pussy? He was Tony's best friend. And Pussy flipped in order to save his own ass when he was busted on drug charges. They showed us repeatedly how much that weighed on Tony and shook him to his core. Now, with Christopher being an addict, Tony was always facing the possibility that there would be a day when Christopher would follow in Pussy's footsteps. Seeing the baby seat after the car accident just took it to another level. Now, instead of just the possibility of Christopher flipping if he gets busted for drugs, you also have the possibility that Christopher gets high and kills his wife and/or kid in an accident - and then what? Does he go to prison or does he flip? There was no chance that Christopher would be able to stay in the Family AND remain sober. Tony realized this. It was essentially a ticking time bomb scenario. Either it ends with the destruction of Christopher or it ends with the destruction of Christopher and others.

Hey guys , I'm glad you got better chairs especially for Samantha. FYI the actor playing Paulie was in his youth a mob enforcer/collector who did prison time. He came , turned his life around and got into acting . He just passed recently also. You'll see next how valuable he was to Tony in mob matters. There is a book called " Made Men " about the DeCavalcante Family in NJ where the real life characters and locations in the show come from. The FBI had surveillance tapes of these mobsters describing themselves as being the characters in The soprano television show. Is it interesting read

36:57 Wasn't about being nice. The moment the guy said "mafia" Christopher snapped back to "reality." Which is what happened before with the cop who may or may not have killed his father. Christopher just swings back and forth to his extremes. The tragedy is that if he had just a little more control he could have escaped the life with Adriana, gotten cleaned up, and lead a normal life. His fate was basically sealed when he told Tony way back when that "the normal life" just was too hard for him, 47:22 The big reason for that is, this life doesn't pay. It just doesn't Every step of the way we see that none of them are truly happy. They can have all the material possessions in the world, but they have nothing in their souls. They're vacant. People die "What are ya gonna do?" They kill and eat afterward like its nothing. You ever notice that? They have a murder, and then usually follow it up with something extremely mundane like having dinner or shopping or something? AJ is showing all the signs of becoming his father. Props to the actor. Both of the scenes where we see him getting involved in violent activity, he is absolutely channeling Gandolfini in his facial expressions. Particularly in that second one where he stands there watching. Like father, like son. Takes all that insecurity, all that pain and venom, and channels it into being a violence peddler.

Despite the fact that he is undoubtedly a terrible person, the show made me feel sympathetic towards Christopher. I felt as though he was someone who wasn't aware of how his actions translated to the real world. It's like he was born into this persona/lifestyle and he never really had a legitimate chance to be normal. You could tell that underneath it all he had a lot of terrific qualities but those traits could never truly be exercised when you are brought up in that lifestyle. It's sort of heartbreaking, to be honest.

It’s such great visual story-telling when Tony looks back at the empty child’s car-seat with the massive branch through it. Then he knows; Christopher, unfortunately, will never overcome his addictions and issues, and cannot be allowed to be a father to a child he would have just killed, even if he would perhaps even have been a loving one. I feel even Christopher understands it in that moment (at least to a degree.) It seems that he’s partially obvious high and disoriented from the wreck, and asking Tony to help him get away, but also asking Tony to finally end his life’s struggle…just my thoughts, but sad all around, and a tragically yet inevitably fitting end for a character like Chris.
@masamune2984
@masamune2984 Жыл бұрын
I should add that Tony is obviously off the deep end and nonplused about a Chris’s death. Coping with depression, or genuinely callous at this point…perhaps both; either way…it’s creepy seeing how little he cares at this point. He really has become a monster, from a combination of an awful childhood. environment, depression and anxiety, but equally his own selfishness, arrogance, shallowness, carelessness, and callousness.

I love the symbolism of Chris and Tony's last scene, to the first. It says so many things in a little bit of time. It compares a lot to the first time we met them, to the last. Chris wearing a hat, driving Tony. Notice its bright outside, lots of color. Lot's of color in Tony's face. He's kinda scolding Chris, but you can tell the relationship is really good. Their actions and demeanor says it all, these two have a close connection. To the last, where its dark outside. Tony's lighting, makes him look very pale. He looks emotionless, compared to the first time with Chris. Everything is dull. Two symbolism's playing hard here. It shows that Chris was right and wrong. He himself, had no arc. He is right where he was at the start, basically. But the relationship he had with Tony did. They started up high, and dives into a dark pit of nothingness. Even before the car wreck, they're not mad, or beefing, but there's just NOTHING there between the two. I think it was a brilliant scene.

I always have taken the whole Tony repeating about the tree limb and the car-seat to be a nod to his compassion for innocent things like animals or children (Pie-O-My, the ducks, the abused soccer girl from season 1). In my headcannon, that's his final straw, Christopher once again being high and untrustworthy but now he could kill his kid (like he already killed Ade's dog). Luv you guys's reactions! Also he screamed "I get it!" according to subtitles. :)

@@user-te2zq6tb9k if that’s the case why does he constantly remind everyone he meets about the seat being destroyed, he’s trying to justify it to himself. Hopefully when you wrap up the series of The Sopranos you can talk about what you thought about the music. "The HBO television drama The Sopranos received considerable critical attention for effective use of an eclectic array of music.Series creator David Chase personally selected all the show's music, with the producer Martin Bruestle and music editor Kathryn Dayak-sometimes also consulting Steven Van Zandt, who portrays Silvio Dante on the show and is also a guitarist for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. They often selected music after completing an episode's production and editing, but occasionally filmed sequences to match pre-selected pieces of music.

I always felt it was more tied into Ade. But yeah, that's a good point. To me, Tony was probably more pissed that he didn't sleep with Ade, and Chris went ahead and slept with Juliana. We know Tony badly wanted to have sex with Ade, but in his mind 'controlled himself'. Which is BS, they were interrupted both times. First with Phil, then the car accident. He would have humped her brains out both times if he could. And would not have stopped it. That's why I think he was really pissed when Chris slept with her. And felt 'betrayed'. His words "this is the thanks I get". He means, him NOT sleeping with Ade.
