The Sopranos - Tony And Johnny Sack Discuss Power Vaccum

After being intimated by Johnny Sacks' men, associate Lorraine Calluzzo asks former Lupertazzi consigliere Angelo Garepe‎ to broker a meeting with Soprano bosses Tony and Junior.
In this scene, Tony meets with Johnny Sack on Angelo's behalf and tries to float the idea of a power sharing situation for the Lupertazzi family. Note that Tony prefaces this as Angelo's idea but in fact it's his.
Tony sees the potential for a Lupertazzi civil war and tries to bring stability, while trying to be neutral to both factions of the family.

Johnny sack killed it every time he was on camera. I always loved his and Tony’s meet ups. Always in a strange location. Next to the bridge in an “undignified” place, with NY in the background, as an ode to “the king of New York”. This show was always so good at physical representation of what was being discussed

Tony helped sign Angelo's death warrant by saying this was Angelo's idea when, in fact, Tony suggested it to Angelo and Lorraine and Angelo resisted. Thanks to Tony, Johnny assumed Angelo was starting to make a move when all Angelo wanted to do was stay retired.

The reason why Tony was behind this idea is bc he wanted to weaken NY. Three bosses? He knew if NY accepted this, they would kill theirselves late or soon and left a big fucking chaos behind. Eventually NJ only could benefit from this.

This showed just how much Tony understood the difference between wearing "the crown" and being a boss in today's world. He made the FBI believe Junior was in charge and even when it was clear he was boss, he was just as careful as Carmine maybe even more so. Edit: its also telling how much John actually respected Tony. He blames "a man of stature" for legitimizing LC and even when Carmine threw out the glorified crew jab, John always knew that in Jersey Tony if ONLY Tony was a real gangster. He made a lot of money, he wasn't an idiot, and he wasn't a punk. Tony never showed any fear going toe to toe with NY's most powerful family and John saw that more than anyone other than maybe Sil and Junior.

I love The Sopranos just as much as the next guy but GOT is without a doubt the better show. Better acted, better writing and definitely better direction. Not only that but there were very few likable characters on The Sopranos. Obviously everyone loved Tony but besides him who else did you really care for? Not only unlikable but the majority of the actors could have used an acting class or two. IMO the only real standouts were Tony, Ralph and Johnny Sack in terms of acting. The rest were severely lacking.

Johnny Sack was like the only character who would consistently pwnd Tony almost every time they went at it. I love the scenes with them two together, they had great chemistry. They were always like friends and you could tell they went way back together and Johnny was like one of the few characters in the series Tony never once tried to intimidate. Even the scenes when Tony would get pissed off and would get in Johnny face, Johnny would just sit back as cool a cucumber, continue to smoke his cigarette while Tony says his piece and them pwn him.

Tony made a very big blunder by trying to stay neutral in this situation. He had little to no business dealings nor a very strong relationship with Angelo, Rusty, or Little Carmine. Tony should have supported Johnny Sack, win or lose. He would've gained both Phil and John's loyalty and all of the problems that the soprano family had in season five and six would've never happened. Win or lose, you always choose a side.... Like Tony says "it's on page 4 of the boss manual."

@StuUngar
@StuUngar 10 жыл бұрын
TheWaveofbabies Isn't that basically what ended up happening in the end anyway because of friction with Johnny Sack's regime that carried over into Phil Leotardo's reign? You don't back Johnny Sack with the "guarantee" that he will win. You do it to show your loyalty to the relationship you have with him. By Tony playing neutral, both sides can see what Tony is trying to do. So if Sack wins, he knows that Tony's loyalty is fickle and he's an opportunist who will take advantage of his friends and business partners when they are in a weakened position. If Angelo and Rusty win, they know the Sopranos are not to be trusted and they would also see him as a scavenger and opportunist. I don't think Rusty and Angelo would be too eager to give Tony a bunch of no show jobs after determining what kind of leader Tony is. If Tony had backed Sacrimoni and Sack's side lost, Little Carmine's crew would've at least had the respect for the Sopranos for having balls and for remaining loyal to their partnership with Johnny Sack. Whatever murders that would've happened would've been settled and Angelo and Rusty would be willing to work with the Sopranos knowing that when the shit hit the fan, the Sopranos would be on the front line ready to go. Go read Sun Tzu, Chanakya, and Machiavelli. All of them tell you in detail why being a fence rider is the worst decision you can make as a leader when you have a vested interested in two warring factions.

Johnny Sacs was the most powerful Alpha boss in the series. He had the brains, the balls, the respect. Didn't take shit from anyone, wasn't scared of anyone. Put Tony in his place several times with the final word. He also owned his mistakes and made amends when he was wrong. Who else in the series put Tony in the beta role so regularly? Programmed Paulie like a stooge when he needed to do some reconnaissance. Check out the little boy oh shit look Tony gave him after he yelled, "Fuck that!" You gotta keep in mind, Tony has no choice but to play beta with Johnny. He's the underboss/boss of one the five NY families. They can wipe off the Sopranos family overnight. The show never showed the other four families, and it kinda gives an illusion that Johnny and Tony are somehow at the same level. They are not. You don't want to be on the wrong side of New York. why are people so blind? The FBI was already aware of all the Bosses and the Cappos and the soldier. The FBI has ALL THEIR NAMES, and puts together thee pecking order as best they can - on the show they alrdy had Tony/Sac/Phil EVVERYONE under SURVEILLANCE - Playing the boss or not didnt mean SHIT - In the end theres only 2 ways, you either DIE, or go to Jail. Theres no third way out. Johnny wouldve lasted less aswell, since Lil Carmine and those still loyal were trying to take it by force not a sit-down. WHy would JOhnny back down?? he has people backing him coz of his father... SOO!!!! Johny was smart, never show weakness, and by doin that he secured himself, had he showed weakness to Lil carmine he wouldve got clipped and rid of sooner, why keep someone around when you dont need them and can potentially overthrow you?? Michael Francese talks about that same dynamic that Johnny mentions with Lorraine. The people who are always the first to jump to violence, or is Johnny says "whack this one whack that one" get the same back in return when they have trouble. The guys who are diplomatic and don't jump to violence are also treated the same way. Karma is on guard in every area of life my friends. Lets keep this in mind and do unto others as we'd have done.

If Johnny Sack had listened to Tony, it would have been really useful for him. The power sharing concept is used realistically and the best example is the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico. Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garcia and Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman were the two bosses of the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico. They both shared the power as bosses. When El Mayos son Vicente was arrested in Mexico City and extradited to Chicago, he helped to capture El Chapo because El Chapo was attracting too much attention to the cartel from the authorities. Johnny Sack could have done the same thing. He could have shared the power with Angelo and Little Carmine. Since Little Carmine wasn’t as smart as he should have been, Johnny could have easily thrown Little Carmine under the bus and have him killed or arrested. That way Johnny and Angelo stay on top with Johnny calling the shots and making as much money or maybe even more with Angelo. Johnny should have thought this through. He hated Little Carmine so much and wanted him out of the picture but his impatience and ego got in the way of him actually trying to take Little Carmine out the smart way. That’s what I love about this show. That you can learn important lessons like these from it.

Tony described it wrong here and should have known it would send Johnny into a rage. What he should have done was suggest Little Carmine get a high-up but fairly powerless position. Then break the guys loyal to him while he can do nothing about it. Then Johnny would have consolidated his position. FWIW it is the same thing Big Paul should have done with Gotti.
@jerardwrightwfg7934
@jerardwrightwfg7934 6 жыл бұрын
Tony described it wrong intentionally because he knew his position is better suited if there is chaos in NY, the Sopranos has the most to gain in the shift. Remember John is usually a pragmatic when working with Tony for the bigger picture, however Tony knew John was also power hungry for him being under Carmine for so long here's his first taste of real power and he wasn't going to give that up.
