As someone who was tied in that type of abusive relationship, Kit's remark at the end genuinely spoke to me. When you're a victim, of any kind, you always find yourself being trapped in between two types of people. Those who genuinely want to put you down and those who genuinely want to help you. The problem arises when both sides no longer care about you, and more care about proving themselves right. The abuser wants to prove that what they're doing has no moral consequence and that there might actually be some good they put you through, while the helper wants to prove that they're a good person and that their values are inherently correct. To me, it's the moralization of victimhood that turns it into such a problem, when people forget that some victims don't need some grand moral outlet, but instead their own space to sort things out themselves.
@rynobehnke8289
@rynobehnke8289 Жыл бұрын
I mean isn't that kind of an issue for the story then? Eggman is fully aware that he is immoral and evil he builds his own brand around this fact. And Sonic as a character is all about not caring what others thing. He will do what he thinks is right in the moment never caring what others will think about him for doing so. Kit's argument utterly fails because Eggman is so obviously Evil and in it soley for his own gain. And Sonic is not caring enough about being right in the eyes of others as that he just wants to prove a point. For that matter doesn't even the "they need space" argument work as Sonic in Secret Rings with Shara showed that he is fully capable of realizing this and only providing what is needed for them to be able to deal with it (after all Secret Rings was a story about a toxic abusive releashionship).

@@blackfox4138 Sorry. What I got from your comment was that you pointed out through your own experience how real Kit's reasoning at the end of the story was. Which I accidentally took as that you think this real world problem is an accurate description of the situation in the comic at this point. With is why I wanted to point out how the real-world equivalent doesn't really work as everything about the situation makes it clear that Sonic is to 100% in the right and Eggman to 100% in the wrong. So I hope you can unterstand why I with my misunderstanding did wrote my initial reply
@Netherwolf6100
@Netherwolf6100 Жыл бұрын
I can understand how you feel, but when one person tries to help you, there's an innate aspect of the situation where the helper of course believes their way is right. If they didn't believe their morals, values, ethics and perception were better than the one the victim is going through, then they're either setting the victim down an uncertain path they have no understanding or experience in Or, they're the Eggman side of things being that they're trying to lead you down a path they know is wrong purely for selfish desires. When someone helps you, its because they believe what you're doing is wrong, possibly hurting yourself and others and you should follow their line of thinking more. In truth, even if Sonic wants to prove his point to be correct, his point is that they have a choice to be Beyond Their Programming. They have a right to be free and not slaves to the rules and burdens someone else placed upon them and that they don't have to kill to find happiness. There's not really a morally grey area in that argument. He's not telling them to join his side, fight against Eggman and become a hero. He's telling them to stop being slaves to an abuser who's already gone and can't hurt them anymore.

There's a lot to be said about the psychology of these awesome characters, but instead of rambling as I'm wont to do when it comes to psychology, I'll just say this: I really want a short story where Surge and Kit come across Big who's fishing and they just find themselves inexplicably venting while he proves the perfect listener. Imagine this super wholesome relationship building where the only one of Sonic's friends they're friendly with is Big because he's so out of tune with the rest of the world that he doesn't even know about their circumstances. Like they lose a fight with Sonic and pals and then just go "C'mon, let's head to the Mystic Ruins. Find that cat."

@@brianross3988 You wouldn't need to have superhuman strength to do that though, I have a 10 year old niece who is so light I can easily lift her up over my head even though I'm not a particularly strong guy, Sonic and the others here probably weigh that much or even less, so even if Eggman has only ordinary human strength the simple act of lifting and chucking them is pretty easy. If you look at what happens it isn't like Eggman is blocking a punch or using some epic martial art, he's just grabbing an extremity and bodily flinging them somewhere (it's exactly what he did to Starline a few issues prior, when he went for the kick Eggman managed to grab his leg, got him off balance, and threw him to the floor.) If he tried to grapple or arm wrestle with Surge he'd likely have all his bones broken, but picking her up isn't a tough task, and the shock of being thrown off balance plus having her hair pulled like that could have served as a distraction for at least a couple seconds, it's not like he tried to hold her for an extended period.

I love how the relationship between Kit and Surge has evolved since they were introduced. It’s so fitting how what seemed like a forced partnership has been replaced with one of genuine friendship in a way. At first Surge kinda bullies Kit and now she needs him to keep her mentally stable (their relationship at first reminded me of Azula and Zuko). They are victims of a bad character and now have to find a way to live in this world where (in their eyes) everyone is their enemy. Funny enough this kinda makes me think of how Metal Sonic or badnics would act if Dr. Eggman died but were unable to go against their programming to destroy Sonic and his friends. It’s also interesting how the dynamo cage represents using substances to cope with that pain. While I personally don’t want Surge and Kit to always be the focal point of the comic series I do hope that they stick around as antagonists. But I also hope they have a good ending. They need some happiness even if they stay villains.

Considering how angry Surge can be, it's worth noting that oftentimes, abusers are victims of abuse themselves. I'm sure you've heard stories of how this bully was picked on when he was younger, so now he bullies other people, or how a bully has a bad home life, so they take it out by being bullies at school. It's a lot like that. Often times, abusers are victims with deep-seated issues, anger, and frustrations relating to their own past and I feel that's very apt with Surge. And the fact that every time she sees Sonic, it's just a reminder of what she had to deal with from Starline; her entire being, her past, her personality, all of it was wiped away so she can be his personal Sonic. Surge herself went from, whatever she was prior, to a perverted mirror of Sonic. Literally, her entire identity is just "Sonic". On a lighter note, I do hope to see more of them down the line. I'm not completely sure how I want their story to go; I'd be up for Surge and Kit remaining as antagonistic rivals, mellowing out while still having a (less than friendly) rivalry, or even being true neutral (as in, they're only loyal to themselves and their relationship with Sonic and Tails can change at any moment; enemies, allies, whatever. Even being enemies, but working together where they have a common foe). Full on good guys? I don't know, but I don't think that's something I want to see from them.

@@crapcase3985 I often remember how shadow was portrayed in the Sonic Twitter Take Over. He was edgy and grumpy, but still had a soft side with hobbies and interests outside of his day job (as a G.U.N. agent). He also doesnt hate sonic, he just finds his personality and philosophy annoying, but he does enjoy competing with him. I think IDW could use that version of shadow without it going against SEGA's rules.

"Why would you bother with me? You already have him." I know this was brought up in the previous episode, but _damn_ that line hurts the more I think about it. In my interpretation, Kit sees himself as nothing more than a filled role, a skillset used to compliment his superior. Sonic is fast, Tails is smart. Surge is fast, Kit is smart. But it seems to me that everything that's happened to him has convinced him that if he's not useful, he has no reason to exist.

When I first knew about Surge and Kit, I didn't mind seeing them in the "Anti-Sonic & Tails/Scourge/Dark Mirror" trope, but as the comics went on, I was surprised at how much they changed and how much *suffering* Surge was expressing and how much chaos she was causing all because she was looking for something that didn't exist. I didn't fully understand where the story was going or what was the reason Surge was acting this other than wanting to burn the world to the ground and start anew just to feel some relief in her life, but this video and comic really explained a lot. I'm surprised that I didn't even think about abuse and trauma being at the "core" of these characters so much. The amount of pain they've both experienced and the fact that they can't go back to their previous lives, whoever they are, and they don't feel like they have anything other than their pain, literally being defined by it is heartbreaking. Imagine your past self no longer existing. In its place is this suffering "monster" who's just looking for a way out of this mess they were forced into, with a state of mind that will never let them be free in life. I would love to see a secondary mini-series (like a follow-up of Impostor Syndrome, but just Surge and Kit and the hallucinations of Starline) of just Surge and Kit trying their best to live as just the two of them, alone in the world, interacting every so often with other Sonic characters (Amy, Blaze, Silver, Shadow, Espio, Big, etc..) and learning more about these character's stories and perspectives and the world, despite their own skewed, abused perspective. They'd only use their powers to defend themselves (and either to steal food to survive or do some minor heroism/terrorism) and just try to escape their past even more and find new peace and purpose. Something like that.

Revisiting this issue, I keep having the eerie feeling in the back of my head that while all the focus is on Surge the reeal trouble brewing will come from Kit. Surge is a formidable threat, sure, but I feel the level of untapped power Kit has been displaying has increased more and more since Inpostor Syndrom. And while Surge seems to violently struggle against her wants and what Starlight did, Kit seems to develop different: Not only he seems to have accepted his role as Surge's protector, but in his eyes he has seen what the others do and feels like they have all broke his trust. No I don't think Kit will somehow betray Surge and become a big shot villain. or something like that, but rather that in his desire to aid her, he'll bring somethng much more extreme. Some villains do horrible things with the best of intentions, after all; And unlike Surge his methods are more methodical, less of a wild bullet and more like a prescise nuke strike.

As a kid, this WAS my reality. Being used. Being hit. Being made to be a person I wasn't until I eventually left at only 16 years old. For a while, I was the worst version of myself imaginable, and I dread what a relapse for me could look like because of the person I was. Surge and Kit are people I see a lot of myself in, and having them as a kid would have made me feel a lot less alone. The pain never goes away, and when that's your reality you can never really know peace, I think. It breaks you, and not every piece is gonna fit back in perfectly. But you have to keep fighting. Not only for yourself, but in spite of the people that hurt you. Every day, you have to fight and make sure you DON'T give them the satisfaction of seeing you fail. And you've gotta make sure you're becoming everything they WOULDN'T have wanted. Don't let their grooming win. Your pain will be a part of you forever, but you can use that pain to better yourself. To help others who are hurting. If anyone here is in a similar rough spot, don't give up. It gets better, and there will always be people out there who love and support you throughout it all. I know from experience it can be hard to accept love and help when you've gone your entire life being robbed of affection. Keep fighting. “Freedom is right there! Just reach out and take it!” “… I can’t…” while she grabs hold of nothing. My heart SHATTERED! When the issue first came out I didn’t see hardly ANYONE talk about what a stab in the chest that was. That and her rant while holding sonic under the water electrocuting him. Telling him flat out that so long as he lives she can never truly be free. It hit. It also made me extra annoyed that she ever had the infinity lamer “make the world pay” reasoning. *This* is soooo much better. Now I hope they retroactively just have her be a public meanness just for the sake of draw out sonic and his friends. She doesn’t need the boring “world bad” stuff with something this juicy on hand. And it’s probably best if we keep her away from the moral event horizon. I want her to someday be a true spicy anti-hero people trick themselves into thinking Shadow is. And be a more agro hero foil for sonic. She already does that now, but I’d like for my poor babies to get the therapy they are owed. On the other side of the forth wall I’m cheering for them the same way Uncle Iroh did for Zuko. I want them to be happy 😭 I don’t care if they make nice with sonic! Just let them find freedom! As foils, I like the thing that separates them is Freedom. Sonic is free to do anything he wishes with no one to stop him or hold him back and he uses it to help people because that’s what he wants. Surge has zero freedom and because of that she hurts people, because she has too.

I can certainly believe surge has borderline personality disorder, at least that's what I got from your own analysis. Interesting, the last time we had a character like this was scarlemange from kipo and spinel from Steven Universe. The whole identity thing, constant distress, being caged, looking for escape, prolonged pain, shame, conflict and hostility. All the abuse they've ever known becoming who they are, definetly a lot of heavy themes here.

Despite Dr. Starline being presumably dead, the effects of his actions are still being felt. He’s the reason Dr. Eggman returned. He’s the reason Belle lost Mr. Tinker. He’s the reason for Surge and Kits tragic suffering. All for his own selfish agenda of returning Dr. Eggman to his former glory. To end the “Sonic Cycle”. So many people were hurt or will get hurt because of his actions. Surge and Kit are unfortunate side effects of his actions. Because of him, they both suffered from so much psychological trauma that they will forever be trapped with Starline. Even though he’s dead, visions of him will still torture them, especially Surge. She will never be able to be free. That’s honestly very heartbreaking. Starline forced them into being what they are.

Very good takes. I find it incredibly disheartening when I see people saying Surge is nothing but a "bitch" or saying she and Kit are annoying, and their ordeals are "typical boring tragic backstories" because...yeah, it's dressed up in a fantastical presentation - but these things are intensely, uncomfortably relatable. And while, of course, it doesn't typically turn people into murderous electro-criminals, it DOES create raw, _messy_ responses. Victims aren't always perfectly pitiable, there is a lot of pain there that many aren't in a position to handle with grace. Surge and Kit, for that reason, _definitely_ felt like an outlet to me, and a damn well considered one at that. I think it's fair enough to break from them for now, give the readers time to digest their arc and build up a bit more steady of a development - but I'm very curious to see where they're taken in the future for this reason. Could be tragic, could be heartwarming, either way I know it'll hit me where it's sadly very familiar, and I really appreciate that.

I don't think that Shadow should be considered a Dark Mirror version of Sonic, the fact that he looks like an "Evil Sonic" was meant to be a red herring to Shadow's actual character. The Fact that Shadow and Sonic look similar is because Gerald Robotnic based the design of Shadow on a Echidna mural that predicted the eventual fight between Super Sonic and Eggman...so Shadow was technically made in Sonics image he is also the predecessor to Sonic and I like the idea of Shadow being the older grizzled Hero who isn't always nice but always tries to do whatever it takes to save the world to Sonic's Hotshot idealist who tries to save everybody and Silver being the Rookie with a ton of potential but lack of experience.

Kit was a gem and showed he is not completely dependant and can make his own decisions, which was great to see. And Surge. Well. I hope she'll find a purpose aside from the one Starline hardwired into her. She shares some similarities with the Androids from Dragon Ball Z. Dude. The parental abuse and substance abuse allegories were obvious, but I never thought about just how much the two correlated into not only each other but Surge’s overall character. Oh, and calling out the Dynamo _Cage,_ I’d never have thought that unless somebody pointed it out. I’ve never had any experiences or family/friends with that sort of trauma, so it was easy for me to take it as a surface-level allegory, without really thinking how much it means for not just how well-written Surge is, but what this means for readers who’ve had the same experiences as well. _This_ is why I love SSR. I’m not a fan of the in-detail recaps, it just feels like giving fans an alternative to paying for the actual comics. (Something I myself have been guilty of until recently.) But the in-depth looks, the attention given to the references, and just the talk and rambling about the comics is something I absolutely love. I’m a huge proponent of “Sonic stories should be darker,” but I’m so used to Flynn’s “hehe hedgehog go brrr” physically dark writing that I went into Stanley’s writing with the same mentality that it’s just cool visual stuff happening and the action’s pretty brutal and that’s it. Maybe an emotional dilemma or sad moment here and there. I was on the fence about this whole arc and this video helped me realize just how deep it goes and all of a sudden this became one of my favorite arcs in the whole series. This entire story is a tragedy for both sides from start to finish and I’m just floored at how well it was all handled.

I feel like Surge could represent a personality disorder (well, Kit as well, but an anxious codependent attachment style), but I'm not quite sure. They are caused by trauma from early age, specifically on the ''lack of identity'' it could be cluster B, it's one of the main signs. Since she's really over the top in her flight or fight response... maybe bpd (they tend to get obsessive to cope)? I know it's not okay to diagnose people but these are fictional characters and maybe someone could relate to them. Of course, I know the disorder is highly demonized so I really don't want her to end having it because she's a villain and we already have enough people assuming borderlines are evil

I think a part that makes characters like Surge and Kit somewhat therapeutic, is how for individuals who've gone through terrible shit that molds their psyche but know that they have to get themselves into some form of stability so that they can keep going, characters like these are like an escape. It's like screaming into a pillow because you can't just tough it out anymore. It serves as burning through those feelings in a way that isn't self destructive kinda release. I think it's interesting to look at for the lineup of characters for the IDW series. The continued exploration of trauma in particular is interesting, because we've seen it in Surge, in Whisper, even Belle. I'm curious to see what direction they take the story next with everything we've seen by this point.

When thinking of a song that fits Surge’s character I can’t help but think that The Stains of Time would work very well. The song is about a person who has experienced great pain and suffering and is trying to cope with their trauma. The song depicts a man standing in the rain which can metaphorically symbolize a person going through a natural healing process. With the rain metaphorically washing away the sorrows of their past or present to bring them into a peaceful life. It is unable to work as the man realizes that there is no “normal” for him to return to, as the painful memories of his past come crashing down on him like a wet monsoon. Upon realizing it has no effect, it transitions from a peaceful rain into a violent storm in a desperate attempt to erase the man's suffering. It is sadly proven futile as in the end, as that man has given up all hope and is left a nihilistic and hopeless man with no dreams.

Okay, I never even thought about that substance thing. That's actually clever, and while I'd prefer not to think of that aspect when thinking about this story's purely in-universe events it is an interesting alegory, one that holds a lot of water, as you point out. I've seen a lot of people have problems with Surge and Kit, calling them shallow and whatnot, andI seriously could not agree LESS. I haven't been a victim of abuse, but these stories still touched me and I think i is really impressive that Evan manages to write multiple fights into this arc while STILL giving us new exploration of these characters with each one, that is jsut GREAT stuff. I think she did a fantastic job with this. And I am honestly just so so happy that this WASN'T the end of their story, I was concerned about it for a second, but naaah, they'll be coming back. And I hope they will! The comic could use some reoccuring aversary for a tiny bit more time, even if they're not as clear-cut villains as some people see them as. Something that was really awesome for me aside from all of this still WERE the fights, they were still jsut beautiful and I LOOOVED seeing the ways Surge used the hyper-go-ons it was great... And how she starts using two at once at the end and how she goes into that painful rainbow in the last one... GOOOD thats... wow, ABT and Evan jsut did FANTASTIC here I'm definately looking foward to Urban Warfare, apparently thats a story written by both Ian and Evan half-n-half. Surge has quickly become one of my favorite Sonic rivals, right up there with Blaze and Metal. Aside from the pure surface parts of her character that I like (cool design, sick powers, neat character concept, etc.) she works so well as an in-universe bastardized version of Sonic that it's hard not to love her even with her only being in like 10 comics so far, 4 of which were a side story. The comics have been able to capture how much of a egotistical bad guy he is with his talks with the heroes.

I can't help but see myself in Surge... It kinda makes me cry actually. My life as a kid was not the worst, but certainly not the best... I was raised in a bizarre way where I didn't had choice, voice or will... This culminated in my teens being just like her; violent, arrogant, a bully... I was so tired of being the victim that I wanted people to feel worse than I felt... Maybe that way I could find peace... But I didn't, I too started being alcoholic at an early age (14). The people I really cared about began to abandon me for my ways of living and being... I was destroying them AND myself. Everything changed after I finally snapped out of it... it happened when I found out I was a Transgender woman... but I still had this rage inside of me... this undefeatable fury that wanted to make the world burn, that wanted the OLD me to burn... I think of my old (male) me as Sonic, everybody loved him, saw him as a cool kid (mostly because I hid my ugly sides except for closest of friends wich i didn't have many), he was a champion at sports, good looking, someone charismatic. While my true self (Female) is Surge, every one of those things, but I still compare herself to him one way or another. It was my GF that thaught me that I didn't need to be better than him... I just need to be myself and that's enough. I think Surge and Kit need people like my GF in their lives, not necessarily love interests, but someone who says they are loved and appreciated just for being themselves. With that and a little bit of time, they'll surely turn into their own heroes and surely overcome the feeling of insufficiency and imposter syndrome that they have~💜

This whole thing was more like when people always thought that Spiderman could never do anything wrong and he was always a shiny example, that he always came up on top at the end because he is the good guy, but later on we can see how terryfing he can be when things arent all that well, and that most of the time Peter isnt on the right side of the story, that his way of doing justice sometimes is flawed and even if he tries his best to stop or make that villian see the error of its ways, that person will stay that way no matter how on the right he is. Heroes might be this force of good and justice, and their morals are always "right" but there are times that the villians they face cant be fixed or talked off from where they are because sometimes if all you know is dispair, sadness and rage then you will never come out from it no matter how hard some people might think that "making you see that you can be happy if you stop being stuck in that dark place" people need time, and even so sometimes some scars are way harder to heal if they can be healed at all that is.

These recent Issues were wonderful. They made me really fall in love with Surges Character full on. I'm so excited for what happens next to her and Kit.

Kit's final point works in real life, but it's tricky in a comic. How is Sonic supposed to deal with a villain who is trying to kill him and others who also thinks he's just morally grandstanding? His only solution is to just keep incapacitating them like he does with Eggman, which we know doesn't solve anything.

Thank you for not caring if you get demonetized to just bring this issue to light. I've lived through some downright hell in my childhood. Familial lines weren't ever honored in any sense from any family member. To this day, my mother refuses to admit that she knew anything about this abuse when she helped decide how much I got oftentimes. I found the IDW series through you, and I've started seriously supporting them. Again, thank you and hopefully IDW thanks you for the truly magnificent work you're doing for them. P.S. - Let them know I've already purchased 7 IDW comics and plan on filling my collection further soon.

Like as much as its likely Sonic's heart stopped but I like to think he was completely conscious through all of that even at the end there and that look was him honestly not knowing what to do or say. As cheerful and uplifting of a guy Sonic is there are just somethings that you know nothing you do or say will help and with Surge having spilt every ounce of her being at Sonic in that one moment anyone would be left speechless too. Also not to mention that he probably just had a years worth of wattage of New York City coursing through his body.

Sure am glad Surge is her own character apart from either Sonic or Scourge. Did really love Scourge and think he could have developed into quite the interesting character if he had more time to shine, but Surge is filling the void he left for me personally while adding her own charm. I just love me my mean greens of this franchise.

I really hope we get a side story set of comics for the these two. Maybe introduce their march to anti-hero status, finding a way to be the 'replacements' to Sonic and Tails on their own terms. Bonus points if we have them run into one or both of there families looking for them.

Surge and Kit by the end of this have developed a sort of kinship...kinda like the two they were created to eliminate. It's like poetry, y'know, they rhyme. Also has anyone felt like Surge and Kit are kinda like Androids 17 and 18? Like in the sense that they were kidnapped, minds wiped, given cyborg enhancements, and made to take out the hero of their respective stories?

5:25 - 5:32 That panel DOES look a bit questionable but I'm assuming Sonic was just being cheeky in using his foot to pause Surge from sliding back further.

Surge seems a lot like a version of Shadow that never had anything to be grounded by. She mirrors Metal's dilemma of being programmed against freedom, and her lack of familiarity with anyone and anything leaves her untethered to something to care about (besides Kitsunami). It's cruel and tragic that they're trapped by mentalities and instincts that they cannot fight against. Neither of them have identities because of things outside of their control (and even Metal, which Sonic has pointed out), so her antagonism and animosity with Sonic is all she thinks can define her.

7:24 It certainly looks like a Pikchu, doesn't it? It has the ears, face and tail. That might be the most Pikachu-looking silhouette I've ever seen, and that's INCLUDING all of those "Who's That Pokemon" segments.

Man, so many characters and storylines. How come Sega still haven't capitalized on the IDW universe and made games or animated shows based on said universe is still a mystery.
