There’s a story I forgot to add, so strap in this is gonna be a long comment. ALSO this is a first but I accidentally exported this video in 720p I am SO sorry 😭😭😭 ANYWAY, I want to preface that I don’t genuinely believe machines have feelings or anything like that, real life aint a mecha anime lol, when I talk about the soul in machines, it’s more metaphorical and relative to the human experience. HOWEVER, something I find ironic I suppose, is the story of my first car, a 2007, base model Subaru Impreza (Hawkeye). It was nothing impressive by any stretch, but I loved and took care of that thing over 8 years from the age of 16-24 as if it was an STI. I wish I could say it took care of me just as much, but weirdly enough, I guess it matched my energy. It was great in the good times, always planted to the road for some spirited driving and took me everywhere I wanted to go. Visa versa, when I just finished school and didn’t know what to do with my life, my clutch fork snapped, when I was down and in a rut, stuck in a dead-end job, my radiator blew on the highway on the drive home. There are many more examples in the years with that car, but it almost felt like any time I was getting way into my own head, it brought me back to reality, even if that brought me a little more stress needing to fix it. In the last 2 years I had it, when things were going really well, I got a new job, bought a home with my now wife, and got married to her, the car was pretty perfect. Some small hiccups sure, it was an old Subaru, but nothing noteworthy. Then after I got married, it was time to let it go, and move on to something new. It almost felt symbolic you know? I always told myself I’d get a new car at 20 (In Australia your license is restricted until you get your full license and 20 is the earliest you can do that, so you can’t drive any ‘high powered’ cars until then, which is why I chose a base model Impreza as my first car), but 20 came and went and more important things were on the horizon, so I needed to wait a few more years, but the time finally arrived. It sucked to let that car go, I did want to fully STi swap it one day, but it just wasn’t practical to keep it. I did sell it for more than I bought it for 8 years prior though, but part of that probably comes from the work wheels I had on it that would’ve been worth half the price of the car 😭 What really sucked though, and just felt like a punch to the gut, was within 5 days of selling it, the new owner crashed and wrote it off. I found out when the new owner, without context, messaged me a photo of the car crashed. This 32 year old man who bought it, somehow, within 5 days, lost control of a base model Impreza from 2007, easily one of the slowest cars I’ve ever driven, and crashed it beyond repair, after I put nearly 200,000kms over it over 8 years. It just seems so nuts, it almost felt like the car rejected him and didn’t want another driver after all that time. Obviously that isn’t true and the guy was probably just on his phone or something stupid like that, but it’s a fun story none the less. Thanks for watching my video and reading my ramblings.

You say cars don't have a soul but your story shows in your heart you wish it were, aside ai we also live in a society that actively crushes others beliefs because things require to pass the hard scientific method But one of the coolest beliefs I follow is resonance with the universe, your Subaru was alive because you injected life into it, your happiness was it's happiness, the vibrations we give off reflect and impact everything it's why happiness is a premium we must give out the Subaru was made of atoms within this universe same as you and me, lovely video 10 stars
@twoMidnight2Green46492 ай бұрын
I think the "soul" comes from the story of that machine. A car is just a car until it carries you through your first crush, your first break-up/rejection (I've had a few of the latter LOL), your first kinda sad boi moments and your first really happy moments. Sometimes I wonder if it's me or my car telling me to push it. Maybe at the same time we're both in "agreement" or we aren't but I (or maybe my car) thinks we are. I drove back to uni earlier today but I just wanted a relaxing cruise and the windows down and the sunroof up. But it's those small tidbits of life that give your machines "soul" more than anything. Edit: I too have a Subie as my first car. Love it to bits. Hawkeyes are my favorites. Sorry to hear you lost your car like that. I'd be beyond pissed if that happened to my car.

Love the topic but I'm really tired of writing love letters to things that are so rare that they only exist as concepts for us. A McLaren locked away in a millionaire's collection may as well just not exist for me. LFA was an incredible exercise in engineering, but I wouldn’t put it on the pedestal over more simple, more mundane creations of Toyota which were created and filled with souls of workers and engineers whose goal was to make a dependable and accessible everyday hero. My old, beat up t22 Avensis wasn't modified, had a simple 1,6 litre engine (an economical sibling of 4age), it was just used to carry me from point a to point b. But every time the engine started, even though it had every right to not do it, as if the car itself refused die - this is for me a true soul of inanimate objects. It’s a reason why supercars even though being certainly fun, exciting and incredible showcases of passion and engineering - will never achieve the true greatness. We have to appreciate the small things we experience every day much more - there lies the true soul and essence of life.
@Viseak2 ай бұрын
@@Gintoki881 Couldn’t agree more man! That’s why I included the ISF in there, and made a comment about how it doesn’t need to be a supercar and you know the cars you like and it doesn’t matter how grand or small etc etc Supercars are just the easiest avenue to talk about that most people can find a common ground on, cause they are pretty fucking cool and have long documented histories behind them But soul definitely comes in the small things for sure, and your story about the avensis is one of those things

Exactly! This is why I love my Alfa Romeo 156 so much! A daily driver but you can feel the passion in the whole car. I've a little MK3 fiesta. It's a dumpy little econo-box from 1990, made 49hp once upon a time and was only ever supposed to last about 7 years. I was practically given it as a wheelbarrow but after wobbling up the motor way and through a few floods, I stopped, gave it a wash, and a name. It's a very weird, humbling and magical experience to drive. Something so utterly mundane, yet something which, through indifference, is not one of fewer than 10 on the road. Tapping away, going about it's work as it has for 34 years. Not exciting, far, far from fast. Just a loyal old friend. It IS pure. There's no novelties, no features even. Just you, the manual rack and pinion steering and the road. Driving it feels like stepping out of this fast-paced, interconnected life we live and into a gentler time. All of this despite the fact she was a product built without passion. Just a phoned in box of scrap, simply an appliance never built to be desirable. (And because it's small and light, it's fast as heck on my local country roads!)

The final chapter really struck a chord with me because it is a sentiment I hold close to my heart. I'm chronically depressed and have many other health struggles. The one thing that keeps me going is creating my final vision with my 180SX. Sure it's a budget Nissan sports car from the 90s but it is my canvas. When I'm gone I want my car to stay as a reminder that I lived and so that when people look at it they can ask "Who was that person?". It can be a time capsule of sorts because I am putting in meticulous effort into making it exactly how I envision it in my head. Financial struggles have made me cut down on a lot of expensive parts and have forced me to be creative and to work on absolutely everything to complete this car. From building the engine in my shed to wiring up the entire car to bodywork and suspension. Even the tuning will eventually be done by me. I'd really like it to be my final work of art. The one piece that I actually see to completion. Hopefully when I'm long gone someone can find my car, maybe sitting in a bush rotting away, and take a photo or maybe even take it for their own. Maybe a little bit like the Devil Z which is a small piece of inspiration in the melting pot of my mind. Thanks for the essay it was a thought provoking watch!

While there are many machines that do have souls, in my opinion the machine that is the best at DISPLAYING its soul is a steam locomotive. A massive, iron beast that requires you to feed it raw coal or oil to keep it alive, its pistons move with a rhythmic chuffing sound like its grunting and groaning and straining to move, its whistle cries out like a elephant. Everything about a steam engine is just visceral motion of the old world.

Machines embody the materialistic aspect of human existence, but in a way that's borderline magical, the two-edged sword of technology that has infinite power to create or destroy, the essence of creation and the power to wield fate lies in Machines. We make artificial suns, we just created antihyperhydrogen-4, the heaviest anti-ATOM with a Nucleus. We shape fate through these pinnacles of human experience, that is the true essence of machines, passing on the torch one step, one mechanism, one idea at a time. Machines are the epitome of human creativity because they manipulate reality as much as humans and in many cases moreso, truely magical, but in a very realistic sense, and that pure form of power inherent to the knowledge of machinery is unmatched by any other human skill.

Love your videos Viseak. Bruv I absolutely agree with everything. In fact, recently my college had auditions for the debate club for which, out of the given topics, the one I chose was "Human art Vs AI art" and I had made that exact point. In human art, every brush stroke, every frame, every decision has an emotion and thought put into it, which makes it that much more special. The judge did test me with a question which was that these apps use human art as samples, but I got selected with the statement that at the end of the day, AI art or anything AI in general is just a mish-mash or potpourri of stuff we make and cannot be called 'Art' but just machine-generated content. The fact that machines have some special machines have souls is something I agree with and am considered insane in my family for believing it. I recently got a learner's license and am going to get a proper license soon, but I have been driving my parent's car a fair lot. We have two cars, a 2015 compact sedan called the Tata Zest (Indian) and a 2014 Tata Nano. The Zest is incredibly smooth and insulated with a Harman eight-speaker audio system, which was revolutionary at the time. In contrast, the Nano is known for being the cheapest production car ever made. However, when I started driving these cars, I actually felt weird driving the Zest. The reason was that it was so smooth and floaty, you wouldn't feel anything through the steering wheel, except when you run over a deep pothole😅. The Nano honestly felt way more comfortable and alive as you could feel the engine and the road when you drive. My dad called me insane and a speed/power freak for this statement as he just believes a car is it's ability to go from point A to B, which I totally understand. However, it's weird that a car that I liked so much (Zest) feels so weird and disconnected to drive. Just shows how some machines are either designed to have souls or manifest souls, but ever since modern times started, all cars have just become uniform, standard and plain boring, and now electrics have just made it worse, except for a few, like Rimacs, Lotus and that N-Line electric.

I know it's irrational to have a love for an inanimate object, but it really does seem like some machines have a soul and a personality. Even demonic things like printers seem to have a personality, even if it's comprised purely of spite. I drive a Golf GTI Clubsport. A spicy version of the plain old family hatchback, where VW engineers threw all the best go-fast bits at it. The Golf R's big turbo engine with its additional cooling, the VAQ differential locker, and it possesses genuine aerodynamic prowess in reducing lift and producing some downforce with its rear spoiler. It was also made lighter than the previous generation, which is no small feat these days. I appreciate the engineering that went into it, but I've come to love it because it's just fun. It doesn't take itself as seriously as the buttoned-down Golf R of the same generation. You push the starter button and it barks to life with a little 2000rpm flourish. Almost like coming home to a pet at the end of the day. It's happy to see you and wants to play. Around town it's really no different to the regular Golf. Comfortable, fuel efficient, and practical. But when you're on a nice road, you drop a few gears, it starts to shine the harder you drive it. The larger turbocharger makes the engine sprint to the redline, as compared to the base model GTI which gives you a huge midrange torque thump but kind of falls flat after 5000rpm. It builds to a crescendo and lets you make some serious progress if you're keeping the revs up. And like some of the all-time motoring greats, the GTI started off back in the day as an engineering team's unofficial side project, originally based on the Scirocco. Nearly 50 years later it persists as an icon. It's a humble performance car that can blend in anywhere you park it. Not the most aggressive looking things on the road, but those in the know can appreciate them and there is a massive community behind all of it. I've made some good friends and made plenty of memories thanks to this little German nugget. Although the downside of the community is that some ppl are complete tools with way-too-loud exhausts and crackle tunes ruining the reputation for the rest of us. Like Gosling and his Chevy, if I were a rich man, I'd keep it around purely for the sentimental attachment. It's done me well, and I try my very best to look after it cleanliness-wise and mechanically. Most people don't seem to realise it's a nearly 10-year-old car. Also, sweet fitment with those RPF1s on the Lexus. Looks sweets as 👌

@@tally5k339 Yeah, I’ve got a hate : hate relationship with printers too 😅 The GTI clubsport sounds like such a fun go kart to drive around in, I’ve always been fond of hot hatches and drove my mates manual GTI 7 a little while back, it was good fun so I can only imagine the bigger turbo. I get the same kinda comments about my F every now and then, people get shocked it’s a 16 year old car 😭 And thanks! I think I got the fitment pretty damn perfect, would be keen to get some more exotic wheels on there at some point but for now, the RPF1’s fit the bill

@@Viseak yeah it's interesting how the same platform with a bigger turbo makes a difference. I've driven tuned regular mk7 GTIs and they have a super meaty midrange but there's not much point revving em out. I like that this one retains the OEM refinement and just adds more on top. And the Enkeis probably aren't the most exotic choice, but they look awesome, are super light, and come in at a good price. No surprise why it's such a common pick. A note on Tomino’s supposed love for machines: While I don’t know this for a fact, I do have to wonder if it is love for them that makes him want to give them such detailed mechanics. Gundam is a vehemently anti-war story. The Gundam is a war machine. It may be that his intention was not to show love for machines, but rather to show that a war machine is not a diety. It’s just a weapon. Rather than relate to the machine, we relate to the pilots and the horrors they live through. While it represents hope for the Federation, it also by extension represents the eternal damnation of the Universal Century by bringing the arms race to the forefront of the conflict like never before. While it may be viewed as mere fan fiction as Tomino did not write it, there is a peaceful version of the Gundam universe that can be achieved via a Zeon victory, as per the total Zeon victory ending of Gihren’s Greed, an old tactical strategy game. We won’t ever know is this would be true, but it is undeniable that the only reason Zeon was able to bounce back multiple times after the war was their ability to hide away on asteroids or far away colonies. The federation would have no such luxury if Zeon controlled space and earth. Getting the military back on it’s feet if Zeon controls all spaceports, maps resource movements and has access to former federation R&D data, the war cannot restart as it did in Zeta, ZZ and CCA. TLDR: The Gundam being mundane rather than an alien space robot might not be a sign of love for machines, but a warning against manmade superweapons and their consequences

Regarding the little jab at Tesla, I just wanted to add that the electrification of cars has made the danger of just turning them into appliances greater, but not a necessity. The minimalist interior of a Tesla Model 3, that many have compared to an apple store, stands in stark contrast to something like a Hyundai Ioniq 5 N or a McMurtry Speirling. I honestly believe that those things have a real shot at building the same personality around them as a 70ies pony car or a no-compromises performance miracle. I don't think there's a formula behind why we choose to personify some machines and not others. It's not something universal, it can't be pinned down. One person will treat their 911 Turbo as an appliance that gets them from A to B, no different from their microwave or coffeemaker, the next person will treat their rusty '99 Passat station wagon like a family member. The next person will treat their coffeemaker that way. If I had to take a guess, I think it's the imperfections that make machines more human-like. There's a little goldilocks zone that's just perfect enough to make us appreciate and tolerate it, but imperfect enough to give it a little personality. But we also have to be open to it.
@Viseak2 ай бұрын
@@Tepid24 I don’t think the electrification of cars is necessarily a bad thing, and I think hybrids are honestly a great step forward in the right direction to get the best of both worlds. I just think Tesla, in and of itself, is a soulless corporation printing soulless machines. There are some car enthusiasts that’ll own teslas no doubt about it, they’re awfully convenient especially if you live in the US where they’re heavily supported. But the more common trend I’ve noticed is exactly what you’re saying, the cars being turned into an appliance. It’d be naive to say that was never the case, it’s happened with countless cars and manufacturers over the years, but Tesla is just the prime example of a car, for people who don’t like or care about cars. They don’t want to deal with all the ‘hassle’ of cars, but they still need to drive for one reason or another. And there’s nothing wrong with that either! Not everyone has to be passionate about cars and care about cars, for a lot of people they really are just an appliance to get from A - B, the same way I treat my computer which is why I absolutely love Mac’s, they simply get the job done, and do it better than any other platform I’ve used for my specific purpose (the creative field which encapsulates both my full time job and KZbin, premiere pro fucking sucks and Final Cut Pro was my saviour) But even with the jab at Tesla, I do agree with you in the end, peoples machines are what they make of them, and if a Tesla is someone’s cup of tea so be it, they just go against every convention I personally hold dear with cars

Mad max is the movie that fits this bill for me. The original movie isn’t about the car, the car is just the weapon used by max, the car is just another character, mad max isn’t a car movie, it’s an old school crime movie, the second and third films are also not car films. Even though they feature cars and the main plot is moved along by driving, the films are not about cars, they are about max rockatansky, as seen by the various wastelanders. But fury road is similar to the first three films in the setting and concepts, but takes it up a notch, I cannot call fury road a car film anymore. The ford falcon interceptor is ditched in the first 5 minutes of the story, this means that the character of Max can shine more, then we are cut away from max, because as we’re going to find out, he’s a side character in his own film. We see the actual main characters of the film, imperator furiosa, and immortan Joe, and more importantly the war rig, the truck is as much a character as everyone in the film. It’s a plot device and a character, and a mobile set piece all in one. And the love for the truck is showcased throughout the film, every detail and every aspect is carefully thought out, every part of the vehicle serves a purpose, the bullbar is real, the engines are real, the entire vehicle including the guns were full functional in one way or another. And even more importantly, every piece of damage, every scratch and every mark has a story or is explained how it came to be, and by the end of the film you can find you’ve fallen in love with the truck. And it’s only at the very end of the film you notice that max isn’t the main character anymore, and never was, the story is being told not from his perspective, but from the point of view of furiosa.
