I think part of the reason why this movie worked is because Oguri Shun (The person who plays Gintoki) is a fan of the manga/anime. When people like a piece and gets to work on an adaptation for it, their passion for it really shows and makes it better. The same thing applies for the Jojo movie. It still sucked, but the people who worked on the CG were big fans so the CG is one of the only things that are in the movie that is decent.

I think it's because Gintama live action intentionally made with low budget humor movie. Just like the tv drama 'Yoshihiko and the Great Satan's Castle'. And the both shows are unexpectedly good in the humor aspects. And they made A LOT OF JOKE ABOUT THE LOW BUDGET THING. Gintama is one of the best, if not THE best comedy series in a lot of peoples' opinions. This might not be a super well known series, but a live action that I really enjoyed was the Rurouni Kenshin live action because it actually had GOOD fighting scenes because the series is based off of samurai and the such. I still haven't watched the Gintama live action film, but now I really look forward to seeing it!

I saw the Gintama movie while on trip in Japan late this September, and it was awesome! Story time: So I'm walking somewhere in Shinjuku (literally somewhere, as we had no actual destination) with my father and a friend of his (neither of which have any clue about anime). We walk past like a 8-storey high movie theater building, and I'm just looking at the posters like "oh haha I recognize all of these". So my father's friend is like "Hey let's go watch a japanese movie". So we do. We walk in, ask an employee for help, and fumble around with the ticket machine for a while. We get tickets to the movie and quickly go in as the ads or whatever are already rolling. Now, I'm highly skeptical, because I'm the only one in our group who even remotely understands Japanese, and of course a live action adaptation doesn't sound too convincing anyway. But it was so good and funny! Because the comedy is mostly visual and the characters speak in a very shounen-anime like style, it's actually pretty darn easy to follow the movie (weebs be like 'where are the subtitles?'). Having seen some episodes of Gintama before also helped. I'm not sure what the others thought, but I sure enjoyed the experience.

I would say it's more like the american equivalent of the simpsons. Lots of references everything is a joke or a setup for a joke with some interspersed "serious" arcs here and there. Don't be fooled by the show ratings it gets on MAL. It's not that good for newcomers to anime, most references will go over your head. The characters are mostly one-sided outside of the main trio. But if you're well versed in Japanese references like...most japanese people are then you'll probably enjoy it.

The formula of adapt an anime to live action it's just use the source material as "inspiration" and not just try to imitate the same in another artistic media language, not just replicate...like hollywood movies that we hadn't even realized are based on snime

hmm... adapting the red spider arc might be hard since tsukuyo's introduction is within another story arc and was at first set out to kill Gintoki (Yoshiwara in Flames) not to mention that epic fight between gintoki and Housen, Kamui's introduction as well as Kagura's Yato awakening. So I think it would be better to adapt the Yoshiwara in Flames Arc first

S'up! New Gintama fan heeere. Been binge-watching the anime for the last 3 weeks and I've just finished the Ghost Ryokan arc (131-134). Saw the live action movie about 2 weeks ago... at first I didn't really like it because 1) I already know the story, and 2) The tone is pretty serious and I never really enjoy Japanese movies whenever they start rambling about good and evil and all that existentialism bull. But then a few days later I decided to come back to it and enjoyed it a whole lot more. Why? Because by this time I've binge-watched more episodes, got to know the characters more, and so I think the live cast nailed their characters, especially the Yorozuya gang (though Kagura's supposed to be younger; basically a child). Whenever a scene feels rushed or a joke seems a bit awkward, I just recall what I know about the characters in that scene and the whole situation improved. I guess that just means some knowledge of the manga and anime is required before getting into this, after all. Looking forward to the second movie! Cheers!

Finally, someone who agrees with me. The movie was fucking awesome! Mind you, if they fucked this up, it would have a big impact to perceptions on live-action movies, especially that Gintama is one of the best anime in history. PS. I found Sadaharu cute and disturbing in a good way. I'd want a pet looking like that.

I just watched the movie today and it was truly mind-blowing. I'm so happy that everybody else seems to like too. Gintama is one of my favorite animes and seeing it brought to life so perfectly was extremely thrilling. All I can say is this movie is a masterpiece. Gintama rules!!!
