Brittany Howard and her bandmates were all friends from a small Alabama town when success came, with a roar, to their rock band, Alabama Shakes. Adored by critics and revered by fans, their second album is now topping the charts. Jan Crawford reports from Athens, Alabama, where it all began.

I'm 75 years old...grew up during the classic rock era of the 60's and 70's...but this woman has such soul and pure passion...and their group has captured my heart for their music. I often wondered, where are the classic rockers of the 21st century...well...here they are...and they are a new breed...not to be ignored...if that was even possible.

That entire region of Alabama/Georgia has produced so much great music. If you are a fan of Alabama Shakes, take a look at the bands on the roster of a label called Single Lock records. It's run by the folks behind Alabama Shakes and The Civil Wars (John Paul White) and they sign some incredible bands... really gives you faith that these kids are still carrying the torches and creating music that will live on for centuries

Annoys me when people complain bands "sell out" when they license their music for advertisements, movies, and TV shows. I think it's great that they do because I have found so many good bands and songs because I seen them on TV somewhere. It's how I found Alabama Shakes, when I was watching Silver Linings Playbook.

I'm the type to skip around in a video. Did so here too. The woman said "the last piece of mail" and it stirred an emotion. Started the video over got to the same part, and again got misty as if I heard it for the first time again. That's how I can tell I genuinely feel good for her and her band. Their breakthrough in life should warm us all, as we too wish for a breakthrough in life! It also reinforces my belief in loss, grief and strife are tied to wealth , fame, security.
