I was born in 1966, in Portland Oregon to a pot smoking, divorced, feminist who was a professional college student who also had to work full time. In the 70s, I was taken to work (Emmanuel Hospital... first trauma center with a life flight!) & Portland State University with Mother, quite often. I remember the women's studies classes the most as they had major impact on my mind. Of course, I was taught that a fetus was a clump of cells and "my body my choice". I was also educated in Catholic schools and attended Mass 2 to 4 times a week from the time I was tiny until age 12. I married young and had my first child and then a second back-to-back. I didn't know I was suffering from postpartum depression (suicidal actually) and I allowed my husband and best friend to convince me I should have an abortion. I was 20 years old. Something in me felt that it was a bad idea and I resisted but they persisted and I relented. As I lay on the operating table after the procedure I came to out of anesthesia, I said "was it a boy or a girl"? The evil doctor cut his eyes at me with hatred and sneered "what do you care"? The weight and gravity of what I had just done fell in my gut as I realized the truth which was that I had just murdered my child. I immediately began to rage and flail, I only remember several Jaws dropping and I was out again. It is the worst most evil thing I have ever done and something that, as I live out my life and I am one month shy of 58 years old, i have learned to live with but it never feels "better with time", actually it is worse, when i became a grandmother it came up again, bigger than life. And yes I've been to confession, several times. I know. I do forgive myself but it just makes me so sad!

There is Sacramental Baptism which requires a living person, Baptism of Desire which is for a person who has faith in Jesus but may not have completed preparing for baptism (they may have started RCIA and then died in a plane crash) God would know if the person already had faith in Jesus and there is Baptism by Blood which is how the early Church martyrs were baptized before they were able to receive sacramental baptism. I'm a religion teacher.

Yet there was a priest that used to do this. Does this baptism have to be done by a priest, or can a lay person do it through prayer?

I think that narration messed things up. Yes you cannot baptize without the baby or body. I lost a son in a still birth at 5 months or so and what I did hear was to have a mass said for the little ones. We did give our lost babies a name so I will do this that was great news.

I had four miscarriages and I managed to catch (literally) only the first one (about 8 weeks of gestation) but the rest were younger yet (around 6 weeks of gestation) and simply got lost. I baptised that first one John Mary because I had no way to know the sex of that baby… I don’t know if what I did was right, or proper, I just remembered that we should baptise babies who are in danger of dying before being baptised by a priest… Still don’t know what to do about these three whom I didn’t manage to catch… Someone told me that we should baptise such children anyway, somehow spiritually, that time does not prevent God from accepting this intention. I think I need to ask some wise priest about it…

@@marysafranek7146 They are dead. Baptism is the beginning of Christian life for the living. The sacrament cleanses one from Original Sin and from that day on they are to live as Christians or raised as Christians if their parents had them baptized. There's a lot of misinformation on here.

Purgatory is in the bible in the Book of Maccabees, but if you're a Protestant you won't have that book because Martin Luther removed it. You won't have a complete Canon.

Limbo is not definitive in the Catholic belief. Yes, we baptize. If you are the Catholic parent, you name your baby, then pray the Apostles Creed, and baptize. You can bless yourself with Holy Water if you can. Pope John Paul II said we entrust them to God’s mercy. Of God’s animals, of course mankind of good will, when they die, they go back to God’s Love. I live in a beautiful area of the world. But we cannot imagine the beauty of heaven filled with God’s love.

God is the author of life. Sometimes things happen genetically and the baby doesn't survive. It is tragic, but sometimes we do learn from those horrific experiences. If someone suffers that kind of tragedy and then eventually succeed in having a baby, their gratitude for the baby is on a completely different level.
