The Sound And The Fury Summary William Faulkner, I read this book, it was hard to get started the first time, but after I got into it, it was worth the read. This book is a great look at a world long since gone, but still worthy of consideration.

This book is not an easy read, like many of Faulkner's novels. It's nonlinear as you point out and at times you got to get further into the story to clarify what confused you early on. The first time I read it was a chore, the second time I loved it and the third time not so much. But on the subject of looking at the number of pages yet to be slogged through before the ordeal's end, I'd say it's Faulkner, you got to do it. And the best example for me of willing myself to the finish line was Absalom, Absalom! The first forty pages is a run on sentence with no or confusing punctuation.

True, this book was an effort, but I’m glad I read it. Don’t think I could do it again though.

it's called "stream of consciousness" and was an extremely popular style of writing during that period (see Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolfe, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce).
