As we see in video after video from The Sound Couple, professionalism trumps every frustrating problem that arises. Kudos to Bart for pushing through the difficulty in working in a super bright sunlit venue to solve the in-ear problems. An important lesson is that even with ample time and lots of planning, the technology-in this case UC Surface on an iPad-can offer a momentary challenge. This does not take away from the brilliant flexibility this type of mixing affords. But, it does mean that the sound technician has to allow plenty of time to set up, initialize, and troubleshoot each gig. Thanks to Bart and Stacy for continuing to help those of us who watch these videos through multiple passes to keep learning from their years of experience in providing top-flight production for a variety of artists. I hope everyone who watches this video takes note of the number of mixes this show required. The kind of focus necessary to manage all this certainly requires the kind of dedication for which The Sound Couple is well known.

Hi Dean, once again, you are too kind, but your insights are uncanny that you are able to connect and link so many concepts and considerations within the content of a video. When you mentioned the number of mixes, it made me think about the fact that we do this from one mixer. Back in the analog days, our utopia was to have two separate consoles for FOH and monitors. I know some that still do this in the digital world as well, or with enough channels, maintain a group of channels for FOH and another for monitors. In a perfect world, I prefer that flexibility, but for the speed and trying to keep things simple, I have mastered theshared preamp! I couldn't imagine trying to manage how we work with two consoles. Part of it is that I am doing the job of two people as most of my time is on stage with the musicians during soundcheck....something to think about for others that are trying to figure things out. We still maintain that a happy band on stage makes everything much easier! Figure out a workflow that supports that! I think our speed (minus technical issues) is a key for us...Also, the feedback we get back from musicians when we hand them a device and tell them that this is yours for the show has been tremendous....I don't think a lot of sound people are doing this or don't understand why they should....it takes all of the stress and effort away and empowers the musician!

Great work team. Outdoor gigs for large crowds are always difficult, especially with unknown numbers or never-ending boundaries. Providing a system that is big enough vs what has been booked can be tricky. Being in the hot summer sun can be brutal. Our summer temps sit around 85~100 F; but got to 114 F in February 1991 - (Perth Australia), however snow has never been an issue. Hydrate, coverup, seek shade and apply sunscreen. Thanks again.

Another great practical video Sound Couple. I’ve experienced some of the same issues with sunlight on iPads and phones. Another good reason for these bands to provide their own monitoring equipment.....ears, packs, and mixers especially. Because of all the variables involved, bands need to take ownership of practicing with ears and to be prepared before shows. IMHO, trying to work through the issues the day of the show could have been completely avoided. For these reasons I’ve stopped providing monitor mixing through ears. I’ll provide wedges, but that’s it. These one off shows are too rushed and everyone gets worked up when problems surface. One solution I’ve thought of would to be to buy personal mixers like the Midas DP48. I’ve just seen too many of these “reboot” the system scenarios. Digital, wireless, funky power, sunlight, lap top computers......many points of failure. The joys of running sound and having’ fun.

Do you have leg weights or something for the E-Z Up canopy? Just wondering how you keep it in place when you have to set up on concrete/pavement in gusty wind conditions. I'd noticed the outfills before you mentioned them :) ... given your experience of this, how would you have changed the set up if you were doing it again tomorrow? It's great to hear what you've learned from doing this (like the UC Surface needing resetting etc. being a higher check of your debugging checklist next time). And would you have preferred to have a violin microphone on the violin, possibly with a wireless unit? Would have allowed the violin player to not be so nailed down and a more consistent distance from the microphone.

We have EZ-Up sandbags and more recently, purchased some weights with straps for popups. We learned a few things so stay tuned as we happened to be back there at that same venue with another band the following week! The violinists that day was a sub and we were told that she was bringing her own mic, so we went with it. If you noticed during soundcheck, the singer wanted her up in her monitor so she could come up and solo, but didn't realize she was stuck back in her place with a mic. Their regular person has built in mic in to his instrument so he is more mobile on stage, and that's what we would have preferred for her as well. We will have another video coming up that he is a part of. Thanks for watching and your feedback!

Bart, got a question for you. I did a field event last week and was not happy with the coverage or performance of my ev ekx's. I've always used them indoors or in small outdoor environments and they sounded great (to me), but they really fell off when pushed in that big field. Anyway, it has me reconsidering my setup and looking at possibly some CDL12's like you since you use them in all environments big or small. My question is; does the less expensive cdl12p perform the same as the CDL12's you have? Or is it necessary to save up more to get the CDL12? Also, in your experience are the cdl12's pretty scaleable or should I just change course and start thinking about acquiring some rcf hd6a's over time?
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple 2 жыл бұрын
I can't comment from experience on the "P's", but the specs look nearly identical. If your requirements are generally similar to ours, just make sure your needs are within 2 boxes per side. More than two, they need to be flown and again, imo, for these boxes, they would be more appropriate for an install as their are probably better choices for portable line array's. Please note as well that that we do supplement them with 328's for center or side fills...at our bigger shows, I would not want to push them harder, so we are at max.
@spidafingaz1
@spidafingaz1 Жыл бұрын
@@thesoundcouple Thank you for your response Bart. I called Sweetwater to place my order for the CDL12'S (the originals not the "P" version) and was informed they are now discontinued!!!!! @thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple Жыл бұрын
@@spidafingaz1 Unfortunately, that looks to be the case. PreSonus, IMO, does a good job supporting their products regardless of their status, so I wouldn't have any concerns about buying them (I have seen them on E-Bay). When it comes to shows like this yes absolutely what's in the budget however I have learned in my 30 years that little extras make the difference between you and someone else... Im not saying bring a 50k setup, just sometimes doing something small like fills can go a long way. For me in this instance I would have setup Delay Stacks even if it was never orginally paid for. Why cause it needed the coverage and explain to the client why and let them know they should be having them normally and here is the normal cost. I have gotten more events that way then by just doing what I was paid to do. As far as ears go that's all on the engineer who's in charge in my opinion....

Recorded a band at a state fair. During their load out, played the recording. The band did not recognize themselves until the vocals started. Offered the band the recording and asked for permission to use it for sound system virtual sound checks. Got permission. Did not ask or obtain permission to post online. The band reserves that right. Will delete a recording if permission is not granted for use.

That is a very polite thing to do, but technically unnecessary as a cover band does not own the rights to the music they are covering. Anyway, this can get into a big debate which we will avoid on our channel. We are abiding by KZbin policies and the band is happy with to have their talent shared...so we are covered as far as we're concerned! One of our primary goal is to share our knowledge to hopefully inspire others to go even further through showing them what we do!

Just out of curiosity... how would working in VSC with this bands tracks help you, unless you're mixing this same band all the time?

@@thesoundcouple ah, my comment was for the other guy.... VSC is just short for virtual sound check, where you take raw multi tracks, and play them back through the console, in place of having the band on stage.

@@dustinthiessen Got it....makes sense. I think that would be the most practical application - which used to be PreSonus's big pitch with functionality. Personally, the concept is neat, but not super practical imo.

Everything sounded great...except for the floor tom. We should normalize soundmen reaching into their pocket and whizzing a fat pack of moongels at drummers who don't have their floors tuned properly. Kind of like the shield of shame for guitar players who won't turn their amp down to a manageable level...lol. Thanks for sharing...enjoy following along from Iowa. Keep them coming.

I do think these issues are the downsides of bands not carrying their own sound person. As a "member of the band" they are in a better position to take actions that make the band better. In our engagements, we are more inclined to manage the circumstances presented to us....not sure if that's right or wrong, but I do think it helps push us to be better with our skills and tools to overcome less than perfect circumstances.
@LNDIowa
@LNDIowa 2 жыл бұрын
@@thesoundcouple I completely understand. As a drummer myself I tend to be bold and ask if they can tune the ring or flubb out. There's a lot of factors including the weather though so we all become experts with a gate and notch filter. You handle it all professionally. I once sold a PDP snare drum I never really cared for along with a Sonor kit that sounded phenomenal. The snare just had this weird overtone that different heads, tuning, or dampening didn't seem to improve. Karma came for me when the kid I sold it to started playing in a band I ran sound for regularly. I just wanted rid of it and ended up having to mix that terrible sounding POS on the regular. Adapt and overcome!

I am drummer at heart...I guess I can't have enough snare drum! We felt the system was more than adequate and appropriate for this type of event. Event sponsors and bands have budgets that are under continuous pressure and we feel that we provide extremely good value for the money for our services and quality of gear we provide. I can't justify investing and providing more gear that the budgets can support ...and if others are, then I guess we are out of business.
