There are classes in Egypt teaching the language to younger generation. To make Coptic a vernacular is challenging as the language has ceased being a vernacular for 400 years and its usage is limited as liturgical language of the Coptic Church. It lacks modern and contemporary words. Most likely that most new words will be derived from Arabic loanwords as the language is spoken by all Egyptians(Christians and Muslims). Arabic and Coptic are related as both are members of a family of languages known as Afroasiatic languages which has several branches. Arabic belongs to the Semitic branch while Coptic belongs to the Egyptian branch.

The language ceased being a vernacular language since the 17th or 18th Centuries where Coptic Christians themselves spoke Arabic even among each other. It is preserved by the Coptic Church as the liturgical language. Currently there attempts to revive it as the vernacular language. Coptic lacks modern and contemporary terms as it ceased being a vernacular for 300 years or so. Any new words and terms will be most likely adopted from Arabic since it is the language spoken by all Egyptians(Christians and Muslims). Also Coptic and Arabic are related being members of Afroasiatic family of languages though Coptic belongs to the Egyptian branch while Arabic belongs to the Semitic branch.

Does anyone know why Coptic always inserts a short 'e' sound that isn't written in front of words that start with two consecutive consonants? For example, the numbers 2 (e-snau), 4 (e-ftou), 5 (e-tiou) 8 (e-shmen) and 9 (e-psit) are all pronounced like this. This is very similar to Spanish words that start with s + another constant, which are always preceded by a short 'e' sound: escuela (school), especial (special), escribir (write), etc. Is this actually a feature of Afroasiatic languages or is this a result of the Greek influence on Coptic? I've never heard of another Afroasiatic language spoken like this. Also, Coptic followed the Koine Greek innovation of swapping the sound of the letter Beta with 'v', which in Ancient Greek was actually pronounced as 'b'. Does that mean all of the Coptic words with Beta in them originally had 'b' sounds instead of 'v' sounds?

If the Jinkim ̀ comes on a consonant letter it sounds like "e" sound.
@tarekmegahed14234 жыл бұрын
To make a consonant cluster easier. All syllabic languages have this feature. Watch an arab trying to say the word "play" If he has a heavy accent he will either pronounce it e-blay or belay, because the /pl/ consonant cluster is hard to pronounce. In fact, arabic forbids consonant clusters except in very rare cases. So instead of the constant cluster you'd have two separate syllables, either "eb+lay" or "be+lay"

Hey guys, I'm a big fan of Coptic culture followed by Japanese and British culture. but right now I'm not talking about the Japanese culture nor british, I'm going to talk about the Coptic culture. Caution This comment is might be very long and not worthy spending on to, so if you hate reading long things, don't read this comment Hey, uhm, I actually doing a research about the Coptics people and oh boy some of em' is pretty deep I would say, but first, let's about the language... as you know, the Coptics are influences based on The Old Greek dialects and Ancient Egyptian language, and some of little bit the archaic language since they were based on the middle east and north Africa, they also adopt the Latin alphabet, not the common Latin one, it's the old Greeks alphabet(?) and were edited a little bit. okay, enough with the language, let's talk about the fun stuff, did you know that they have their own flag and coat of arms? well, they have one because of they were excluded in Egyptian flag and more into Arabic culture, since the Coptic is ancient so, they feel like the government doesn't want to show the heart of real Egyptian culture, before it was invaded by the Islamists Colonization in the dark age, okay, their flag is the St. Cross George flag but instead of red, they used blue and a coat of arms in the middle... uhmmm, I kinda forgot what the coat arms represent of so, imma just tell you guys what I remember about it, in the coat of arms, it has a cross in the top of the colour lines and I think it represent Christianity and Orthodox Coptic idk and I mostly forgot about the colours part but, I remember that the blue represent as the suffer that their ancestors had to through during the Islam Colonization, their ancestors were forced to tied their cross necklace on their neck until their faces turn blue and dead, that's why the choose blue... and like I said, I kinda forgot the rest of it but, you can look it up if you want to, there's a lot of information about em'on google which make more sense than what I'm saying here....
