Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. I created this for educational purposes to spread awareness that we are diverse as a planet.
Special Thanks to nrl m :D
Buginese / Basa Ugi (ᨅᨔ ᨕᨘᨁᨗ)
Region: South Sulawesi; enclaves elsewhere in Sulawesi, Borneo, Sumatra, Maluku, Papua in Indonesia
Ethnicity: Buginese
Native speakers: 4 million (including 500,000 L2 speakers) (2015 UNSD)[1]
Language family: Austronesian
is a language spoken by about five million people mainly in the southern part of Sulawesi, Indonesia.
The word Buginese derives from the word Bahasa Bugis in Malay. In Buginese, it is called Basa Ugi while the Bugis people are called To Ugi. According to a Buginese myth, the term Ugi is derived from the name to the first king of Cina, an ancient Bugis kingdom, La Sattumpugi. To Ugi basically means "the followers of La Sattumpugi".
Little is known about the early history of this language due to the lack of written records. The earliest written record of this language is Sureq Galigo, the epic creation myth of the Bugis people.
Another written source of Buginese is Lontara, a term which refers to the traditional script and historical record as well. The earliest historical record of Lontara dates to around the 17th century. Lontara records have been described by historians of Indonesia as "sober" and "factual" when compared to their counterparts from other regions of Maritime Southeast Asia, such as the babad of Java. These records are usually written in a matter-of-fact tone with very few mythical elements, and the writers would usually put disclaimers before stating something that they cannot verify.
en.wikipedia.o...
Prior to the Dutch arrival in the 18th century, a missionary, B.F. Matthews, translated the Bible into Buginese, which made him the first European to acquire knowledge of the language. He was also one of the first Europeans to master Makassarese. The dictionaries and grammar books compiled by him, and the literature and folkfore texts he published, remain basic sources of information about both languages.
Upon colonization by the Dutch, a number of Bugis fled from their home area of South Sulawesi seeking a better life. This led to the existence of small groups of Buginese speakers throughout Maritime Southeast Asia.

As an Indonesian, I never hear anybody speaks Buginese directly. When I hear this, I think similarity of accent with Malagasy. Sometimes I hear the accent heard like Romance languages' accent. Well, Malagasy also is influenced by French, especially in writing (silent ending vocals). While Buginese has similar consonant pattern with Italian. Well, it is only my opinion.

it's mostly due to pragmatism (just being able to represent some sounds is better than inventing a new phonetically accurate system) and the materials used. by the time writing reached sulawesi it has dropped the vowel killer mark. not a problem for mostly open-consonant languages like buginese, but as it traveled further and met languages with lots of closed consonants, those ending consonants remain unwritten

Oh, no wonder it sounded familiar. My late paternal grandmother used to speak in Boyanese and Bugis to us as children. I never understood what she said then, but the nuances of the dialect stuck. I grew up hearing my aunts and and uncles conversing in Boyanese and Malay, occasionally I would hear Bugis from my late grandmother. Even thought my maternal side was purely Javanese, I never did hear them speak much Javanese. And as third generation Javanese, Boyanese and Bugis, I never got to learn to speak it.

Bugis seems very different from what I expect, I only got to pick up few words similar to my language: Tau - Tao Eppo - Apo Asu - Aso Raun - Dahon Ure - probably related to "Ugat"(?) since /g/ and /r/ are common phonetic changes between Indonesian and Philippine languages Lasuna cella - Lasuna/Lasona (archaic term) Fute - Puti Gau - probably related to "Bughaw"(?) Piso - Pisaw/Pisao (archaic term) Oto - Oto *I believe this is a loan drom Spanish along with "Kotse" Mejang - Mesa *Spanish loan Bangko - Bangko *Spanish loan

I'm from the Bugis tribe in this video can't be used as a benchmark that all Bugis are like in the video, Bugis are divided into several regions and each region has their own accent in the video I heard that the letter p is read as f, that's very wrong, because in the Bugis script there is no F Bugis is divided into several parts Bugis Bone Bugis Wajo Bugis Soppeng Bugis Sidrap Bugis Luwu Bugis Pinrang Bugis Sinjai Bugis Barru The Bugis tribe that I mentioned earlier has a different accent, there is even a Bugis language spoken differently by the Bugis themselves depending on the region. I myself mix Bugis, my dad is Bugis Wajo while my mom is Bugis Soppeng Because I was born and raised in Wajo so I joined my dad to become Bugis Wajo my big brother was born in Soppeng but grew up In Wajo, My family's accent is Bugis Wajo, My mom now speaks Bugis Wajo accent even though my mom was born and raised in Soppeng

@@AbdulKareemAbdulRahman you mean which dialect is the common one? the common one is obviously Standard Bugis (the one you saw on this video), it's true that the "f" isn't native to Bugis language, he's not wrong but the Standard Bugis use "f" as well, each dialects of Bugis has its own characteristic (from tonal, accent, etc) but I could say the most common one is the Standard Bugis with this exact characteristic like in these video
