Finally! I’m waiting for this for so long time. Thank you. I know Sgaw Karen a little. With simple phonology and grammar, Sgaw Karen is considered to be the easiest hill tribal language for Thai speakers. It’s spoken in mountanous area in northern and western Thailand and Kayin state of Myanmar. There are many writing systems invented to write Sgaw Karen. In Thailand, 3 writing systems are used: 1. White alphabet (Lix Wa), Burmese-based script just like in this video but with slightly different symbols and spellings. This is widespread script among Sgaw Karen community in Thailand. 2. Roman alphabet (Lix Romei), invented by missionaries in Burma hundred years ago. It’s widely used among Christian Karen communities in northern Thailand. It uses 5 alphabets at end of each syllables to represent all 6 tones instead of diacritics: -j, -x, -f, -v, -z, for example “pgaz k’nyau cgauz” 3. Thai alphabet (Lix Cauf Taif), promoted by some scholars in school for Karen youths who are mostly bilingual in both Karen and Thai so that they can learn their native language together with Thai easily. Another interesting Karen writing system I’m learning is called “Lix Kwaij Kau” or “Lix Hsau Waiv” (Chicken-Scratched script). This is not used in Thailand but small area in Myanmar. It’s retold by Karen that it’s their indegenous script mentioned in Karen mythology but actually derived from Mon with totally different writing method: Each syllable is written in block like Korean and Chinese. It looks like Chinese but actually the script belongs Indic family. I think this is very cool. This rare script is also used in Pwo Karen, another Karenic language in Myanmar and Thailand.

The community center I intern at has a lot of Sgaw Karen children here, so this is very helpful (even though they speak English, but I love to know of the language of others.) Thank you!

You got it wrong. Read her description properly Karen from Myammar has nothing to do with Karen from english language. It was written "Karen" but actually pronounced as "kayin" in Myanmar. No that "Karen" like Amy from Kitchen Nightmares.
