Bethany, as a trained vocalist myself, I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated your vocal analysis of Engelbert. He DOES have a beautiful quality to his sound. This video was not an actual live performance as that is the solo track from his single/album. If you liked that, you MUST treat yourself to one of the best vocal performances I’ve ever heard by him. It’s on KZbin. It’s a live performance of “Love is All” (he’s wearing a white suit). He shows incredible vocal technique… dropping his jaw and creating a lot of space on open vowels. BUT the best is the last phrase. He connects the phrase without a breath and holds the last note (with strength) for so long. The breath support is unbelievable! I would love to hear or see your reaction to that performance. Do yourself a favor!!!!

Engelbert is one of the great crooners with such a smooth relaxing voice. His career has spanned almost 7 decades. His first hit song was "Release Me" in 1967. He has had many great songs including ""Love Me With All Your Heart", The Last Waltz", "There Goes My Everything", "Am I That Easy To Forget?", "After The Lovin'", "Les Bicyclettes de Belsize", "Winter World Of Love", "This Moment In Time", "Love Will Set You Free", "Quando, Quando, Quando" etc.

Englebert Humperdinck was played on the radio when my age was in the single digits. My grandparents played this and a few other vocalist and musicians. Great name, Engelbert Humperdinck. I heard a lot Boots Randolph, i.e. “Yakety Sax”, later to become Benny Hill’s theme music, on The Benny Hill Show. 8 track had just come out, and I couldn’t tie my shoes yet. Another fine reaction Bethany.

So happy Beth that you got to review this fantastic performance of a unique singer. Honestly I found it after watching the Marvel show, and ran away to buy some of this LP records. But I did know Engelbert. My Mom and Dad loved him (they called him "the singer with the difficult name" - which by the way is not his birth name!). I think his version of Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You is the most amazing, and there's quite a few of them!

'Release Me' was always the show stopper, but songs like 'After the Lovin', 'Spanish Eyes' (I learned the Spanish phoenetically for part of the song, just as Englebert did it live!), "Les Bicyclette De Belsize', 'The Last Waltz', and this one of course.....and on and on! So many hits back then!!! Thanks for doing this!!!

Going back to the early 70's, I moved Engelbert, Tom Jones and Mrs Mills ( If you could possibly know who she was) from St George's Hill, Weybridge, to the States. Pat Dorsey, Engelbert's wife was an absolute gem of a lady! His house had an attic games room, big enough for a full size Snooker Table, Pool Table and assorted gaming machines, Wurlitzer (?) Juke box, Darts Oche, Gaming Table. Very well set up, luckily for us we didn't have to move the Snooker Table, a 12'x6' slate top is a serious proposition. We did move his Grand though, without any problem! Oh, and Tom's Pool had a Red Dragon (Welsh Motif) on the bottom of the pool.

@@tulyar57 I took it up with you because you repeated the inaccuracy. A full range singer can croon but a crooner can't cover a lot of songs because of lack of range. Jones and Humperdinck not only had outstanding range but outstanding vocal control at their top end - something a crooner can't do. Being referred to a as a crooner is an insult if you aren't one.

I've always said that if I was granted one day of being able to sing like any singer in history, it would be Humperdinck. He can't compare to say Nat Cole for phrasing or song crafting in general, but his pipes were the best I've heard. EDIT: this isn't the best track to show his pipes - it's so heavily stuido processed. Wikipedia: Arnold George Dorsey MBE (born 2 May 1936), known professionally as Engelbert Humperdinck, is a British pop singer. You knew his borrowed stage name. 70s, he performed regularly at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas through the early and middle years of the decade, recording a live album at the venue with the Three Degrees as backing singers. In March 2012, the BBC announced that Humperdinck would represent the United Kingdom in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2012, to be staged in Baku, Azerbaijan, on 26 May.

My mother was a huge fan. We used to live close to Atlantic City, and she would ask my wife and I to take her to one of the casinos to see him, which was usually twice a year. I have lost count of the number of shows we have seen. He often left this song out of the playlist, including it only as a part of a medley. I thought this was much better than _Release Me,_ which I was tired of hearing. He did a great version of _My Funny Valentine._ Being more of a rock person, this isn't what I would normally enjoy on a regular basis, but he is a great singer, and he put on a very entertaining show. One thing to note that you didn't mention: listen to him each time he sings the word _cry._ I don't know if it is just how he normally pronounces the word, with Welsh being his background, or if it is intentional, but there is always a hint of emotion. What made this a joy to watch was the dreamy look on your beautiful face. How many times did you listen to this after filming the video? C'mon, 'fess up.

Since you wondered about his name, I believe it was chosen for him by his producer. The same guy worked with Tom Jones, and as I recall he many have chosen a simplification of his real name for his stage persona, and a few years later did the same for Raymond O'Sullivan, renaming him Gilbert. Gimmicky, but if they hadn't all had talent it wouldn't have helped.

Funny you should mention Tom Jones. The two were very much contemporaries, and for the longest time I would get the two confused. They sort of occupied the same space, at least in my head. The one major difference...Engelbert didn't have many songs where he crooned about murderous rage. Loved your review and I particularly liked Engelbert's performance, which was very expressive for the time. This is the epitome of the art form of lip syncing.
