I've heard these imitate a hawk,to keep other birds away from the bird feeder,they really like sunflower seed's, and I've heard them imitate a cat. I believe they are very intelligent bird's.

The Blue Jays always do that. Someone said that it was to help warn birds in the area of Hawks but I had a feeling that it was something a little more self-serving.😆

@sunseekermama that's interesting! I didn't know that! But it makes sense! I saw this gorgeous blue jay in my yard today and yes! I do have a bird feeder too! Maybe he was calling first dibbs on the bird feeder. Lol.

Definitely true. I have chickens so when I heard a hawk call right outside the window, I ran out there, just some Butthead mohawk bird doing impressions.

I agree with that feeling of connection to home and nature, because "Bird sounds enforce a human's innate connection with nature; when birds sing, we know we are safe - when they quiet down, we panic. This instinctive familiarity with bird songs plays a subconscious role in our stress recovery".

Just saw one of these in Pine Valley, Utah on a camping trip. Wasn’t sure what they were. He nabbed one of our Cheetos off of our picnic table. 😂. Thank you for the video. 👍🏽

Wow! I wasn't aware they do that! I looked it up, and you're right "Steller’s Jays are common in forest wildernesses but are also fixtures of campgrounds, parklands, and backyards, where they are quick to spy bird feeders as well as unattended picnic items." www.fs.usda.gov/detail/boise/learning/?cid=stelprdb5309760

I was on vacation in Idyllwild a while ago and kept waking up hearing them, which was kinda nice. Each time I saw one I'd end up finding a feather too, so that's how I was able to identify them. Still have the feathers and I'm very happy I got to see them
@MontereyExplorer
@MontereyExplorer 2 жыл бұрын
Such a nice story! I admire how you observe and connect to nature. You will need a permit to keep the feathers. "The possession of feathers and other parts of native North American birds without a permit is prohibited by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA). " I checked and found that the Steller's Jay is listed in List of Birds Protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (2020).

They wait for me to fill feeders every morning and once they see me out and about they call out to let their pals know. A dozen or so quickly show up. I feed them (and chipmunks) sunflower seeds & whole peanuts. It gets a bit pricey in winter but worth every penny to me.
@MontereyExplorer
@MontereyExplorer 2 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a fun and entertaining way to observe them up close and connect with nature. Sunflower seeds & whole peanuts are good natural food sources.

That's fantastic! Steller's Jays have a wide range that stretches up into Washington state. It's interesting to hear that you have them around where you live. They're intelligent and vocal birds, so I'm sure they add a lot of character to the soundscape out there.

Such a cool bird. I think they are the bird that makes a call me think that Donald Duck has roosted in the trees behind my house.

You're absolutely right! Steller's jays are known for their loud and varied calls, and the one you're describing is a classic. Their harsh "shack-shack-shack" or "chock-chock-chock" definitely has a cartoonish quality to it, and it's easy to see why it reminds you of Donald Duck.

These Jays think they rule the forest up here in the Santa Cruz Mountains, but they are no match for the acorn woodpeckers at my feeders and water bath. I posted a great video of a Steller's jay and Scrub jay meeting up at my water bowl on a 100+ day. It's one of the best video captures I've made. I get all my bird seed from Walmart, the best

Bent's Life Histories said that there are like five races/subspecies from north (BC) to south (California).
@MontereyExplorer
@MontereyExplorer 5 ай бұрын
Gemini said: Bent's Life Histories might be a bit outdated on the number of Steller's Jay subspecies. There are actually recognized to be around 16-18 subspecies depending on the source [Wikipedia, All About Birds]. The variation is quite interesting! The Steller's Jay shows a lot of geographic variation in its plumage. These subspecies are differentiated by things like crest color and length, black markings on the head, and overall body size [All About Birds]. So, Bent's Life Histories wasn't far off, but there's more diversity out there than they described.

Always hoping to here the almost synthesizer "chick-woo" that is completely alien. I know it's not rare because every stellar jay in santacruz makes that sound. But I just don't see any record on yourube.

The reason for the jay's raised crest is a mystery. But one thing is for sure: it's a fascinating adaptation that helps these birds to survive in their forest homes.
