The Soundtrack to the End of Times - A Deep Dive Into Tomorrow's Harvest (Boards of Canada)

After 8 years of complete silence since their third full-length project "The Campfire Headphase", in 2013 the electronic duo Boards Of Canada unexpectedly came back with "Tomorrow's Harvest", an opus of 17 mysterious tracks acting as a soundtrack to a dystopian and hopeless world... Our future.
This video explores the core themes and theories around Tomorrow's Harvest, track by track.
Since the Geogaddi deep dive was so well received, I decided to deep dive a Boards of Canada project again! This video took a lot of work, so if you enjoy this video, please feel free to leave a like and subscribe. It means a lot :)

Hi! Here are some small clarifications that have been brought to my attention by viewers in the comments below: - That mysterious one second of audio in Cold Earth is MUCH more likely to be appearing at 1:54 in the track - The sun is RISING on the front cover and SETTING on the back cover (thanks sun scientist) - Aphex Twin's Syro was released in 2014 (not 2013) (Don't hesitate to comment! Actually nothing to do with sun science and more to do with knowing the photo was taken from Alameda. Which is east of SF. So you face west to shoot SF from there. I order for the sun to be in frame it has to be west as well…so setting ;) Album starts with the death and ends with rebirth, leading to death, leading to rebirth, leading to….

Apparently someone close to them (part of the Hexagon Sun collective) posted about a year ago that they are indeed working on something, and this guy is legit. However, last time he said that was 2009 or 2010 and it took a few more years for this album to come out in 2013. Hopefully that at least means we will se an album in the next few years. I've been waiting for a BoC album a new GTA game for the same amount of time now.

This comes from Mark David Garrett, known in the community as MDG, who is a photographer and is part of the Hexagon Sun collective where BoC are the most prominent members. He posted a year or two ago that the brothers are working on something but didn't give any details on release dates and such. As I said he previously confirmed that they were working on something before the release of Tomorrow's Harvest but that was a couple of years before the album actually came out, so we might have to wait a year or two yet. Trust me I also hope that my post is not BS.

Annoys me how many people put this album down when it first came out but the marketing and the actual album were top tier. An absolute masterpiece...

And many came to change their minds. At least on some of the forums. But some still feel let down, but I feel maybe those are the sort of people that don’t relate much to “deep” “controversial” topics etc.... the album is very moody and done differently to their back catalogue, but even so, I felt the judgement was a little displaced and harsh. And for what? Because some people don’t think or feel about deep subjects, or won’t? This isn’t an all “ear-candy” album. To me it was the album they made very personally, and always wanted to make, and then they did it. It is still my favorite thing they have ever done. Jacquard Causeway is my life anthem. So hauntingly beautiful

@@soulslip totally agree. Jacquard Causeway is something incredibly sad and poignant to the core. I listened to this track for the first time at night when I was walking in an unfamiliar part of town and the track made the deepest and most depressing impression on me.

@@itemcaligo I myself would agree about that song being sad and poignant BUT I also find Jacquard Causeway to be fascinating because of the sheer "massive scope" of the musical elements, composition and production value. I became a BoC fan in 2005 and have taken in all their work (well their mainline albums and 3 of their EP's so far) and I have heard nothing...NOTHING...in their catalog sound anything like this! The slow, dragging 2/2 beat, the quiltwork of lo-fi synth leads that fade-in and out through the course of the 6 minute+ length, the way it breaks down into a fiery afterglow of ambience toward's it fading last seconds like a supernova lighting up the sky. Just because Tomorrows Harvest is an album about the potential "end times," I'd like to think that's it's about something beyond death (a re-occuring theme on the album). If you've ever watched Lars Von Trier's Depression Trilogy and see the transition point between Melancholia and Nymphomaniac, I kind of see a similar mood happening on BoC's 2013 album too (ironically the same year that Nymphomaniac came out). Yes this album and that song in particular are depressing...but there's beauty that lies within depression as well. Something sacred that endures. Anyways, Jacquard Causeway is a brilliant piece of electronic music evolution for BoC. I wonder how they're going to top that one with their next album haha.

Hello, in the interview they say this " In a way we're really celebrating an idea of collapse rather than resisting it", for me, as they grew older and had children, they realized that life is a cycle, and that humanity works in cycles too, that's why is a palindrome and can be read both ways and you end always in the same place "Collapse": the etymology of the word means "to slip together", so it makes sense they celebrate the collapse instead of resisting it. Fighting death and rebirth cycle is totally useless and makes more suffering than joy, again, another quote: "Being a father fills you with a healthy understanding of your own mortality, and on a bigger scale that responsibility highlights the fragility of our society, or the problems with it. ". That's my take. And by the way, thanks a lot for the video, I loved it

I am in the uk and was lucky to have seen them rarely live...incredible brothers who make music which is inspiring creative and unparralled...no one comes close...hoping we get new music from them soon as been too long since 2013

ok but in all seriousness I love this video! I have a strong nostalgia connected with BoC (as do many others I'm sure) and this album came out right when I was graduating college. It was honestly such an overwhelming and scary feeling. Because I was supposed to know right then and there what I was going to do with my life. And as I get older, I realized that I should have taken more time to figure out myself, and I regret that to a certain extent. Anyway, great video!!

I really got into this album in the months prior to Covid. And I still love the shit out of it. It just blows me away. Little did I know the world would soon be thrown into some version of a dystopian dream lasting year upon year (and I hope it ends!). True masterpiece.

The palindrome theory blew my mind. TH was my least favorite album from BoC because it didn't seem to click like their other albums (like you play one song and you have to listen to the rest because you can't stop), the flow was weird, the songs were random and didn't make much sense to me. Now when I listen to it in the right order everything has become clear, you can feel the whole landscape in its full force, these guys are genius. This album should be the next Voyager album if that happened. The release part with the ARG was also interesting and fun. Thanks for the vid bud!

As time goes on Tomorrow's Harvest seems to becomes more and more relevant. Whether or not one believes we're on the cusp of something dark, or at least big, it's really possible we might be and to me this album really embodies this element quite well. Come to Dust and Reach For The Dead come to mind... Anyways, in a tragic way I think Tomorrow's Harvest would almost be the most cinematic, perfect end for their discography. Unless of course they have something that touches upon similar themes in an even bigger way. This is all opinion of course, just how I feel. That being said, I'm holding onto the sentiment that there is something new coming, eventually... But TH would naturally be, to me, a great conclusion of their work.

The palindrome idea is that it sounds the same when said forward and backward. yes pairing them with their sister track is coherent but thats not the idea of the palindrome at all. Quite simply you have to listen to the album forward and THEN you have to listen to it with the backward tracklist (Semena, Come to dust, new seeds) so that the album sounds the same foward and backward (backward in tracklisting not in audio term) I think this is what most people get wrong about this album and it annoys me a lot ahah.

To give you an example if you say REDIVIDER, you don't go: "Oh wow it's a palindrome REDIVIDER -> RREEDDIIV" you just say the word ... and then you say it backward and it sounds the same. That doesn't mean the Sister track way of listening to it is wrong but in my opinion it's not what the bros meant when they said the album is a palindrome.

Loved this album for years, this is the first I’ve ever heard of the palindrome theory and listening to the different tracks connecting seamlessly properly blew my mind. I always thought Farewell Fire from the Campfire Headphase makes a really good prelude to this album. It very much gives an tone along the lines of hearing the world and civilisation ending as it slowly fades out, with Tomorrow’s Harvest being the aftermath

Really enjoying these deep dives into one of my favourite artists. I've learned a lot of new information from watching your videos, and I've been a BoC fan since around 2000 when I first heard '1969' on the first Weebl and Bob video (I think) and sought out what the artist was so that I could listen to more of their work. I was initially disappointed with Tomorrow's Harvest when I first heard it, but it has definitely grown on me over time. Still isn't my favourite BoC album (that is Music has the Right to Children), but I appreciate it a lot more now.

For those deeply into BoC and don't already know these artists, I can highly recommend Loess and Zorn off the top of my head. Loess self titled as well as Wind and Water, or Zorn's The City's Collapsing (But Not Tonight) or All We Can Do is Enjoy the Ride are standouts from my musical memory. While that's true, KZbin gives benefit of the doubt to lawyer's complaints, so the video gets demonetized or taken down, until the process of investigation is done(they take their own sweet time). So even videos that rightly claim fair use are subject to attack by lawyers who dedicate their time to finding such "violations". It's subject to the whims of KZbin, unfortunately.

Thom, I'm so glad you talk about that one second sound on Cold Earth. It may be the single most unusual sound I've ever hear in electronic music, so jarring and unexpected. I disagree with where you feel it occurs in the song, however. The sound I'm referring to is at about 1:55.

I dont think there would be much to talk about with autechre unless you are a musician. And an electronic one. I dont think there is any reasons behind their evolution besides just getting in front of machines and trying their best to push the boundaries and jam. In any interview i have seen of theirs they really only talk about experimentation then any theories or stories behind it

Also it makes sense that come to dust sounds like an extension because like I said the alblum is done in the film score style so to have reach for the dead end abruptly and then later have a track that's pretty much a twin continue on the bizzare note makes sense as movie will sometimes do that

Good work. Glad to see that you are loving the music I grew up to. I have been listening to BOC since 1996 I ran across Boc Maxima when I used to DJ. Funny thing, I followed the whole 'puzzle' before this album drop. In the beginning, I guessed that the album would come out June 9th. Close! But regardless, as soon as the album dropped I immediately DJ'd the tracks mainly so I could just do a quick remix all in one play. Well I posted on the internet and they actually liked it! Huge deal to me. But WARP ended up taking it down the next day for copyright infringement. All good though f&ck em. Can't believe they dug my mixtape I was acting like a 16 year old groupie at a Britany Spears concert. You should listen to Future Sound of London. They have have changed music at that time and have a ridiculous amount of music under various Monikers. It's crazy to me nobody has done a Doc on them. As far as I am concerned they are the OG's of trip hop/IDM. Check them out. But good work holmie!

Absolutely love the video. Now dunno if it's only me, but when the previous 3 albums in form of MHTRTC, Geogaddi and Campfire Headphase seems like the 3 parts of the same story, this one sounds to me like it's own separate thing, maybe the part of the next trilogy?

TH has always felt like Geogaddi pt. 2 to me in a way, although different in terms of musical composition, less driving melodies but the sinister subliminals and overall themes...

in addition to events at an extinction level there are parallels to collapse and rebuild of societies which we have some records of happening in cyclical nature. the use of anagrams, masking, etc is such a clever way to present this theme across more than one meaning. thanks for the video, enjoyed it
