One hundred years after the death of the Buddha, Buddhism began its first great schism, and it continued to schism in its second hundred years. The first split was the emergence of Theravada, headed by elders, and the Mass, a group of ordinary monks. In the second hundred years, a schism occurred in Theravada, probably around the beginning of the third century BC historically. This split lasted for more than 300 years, until the middle of the first century AD. Many independent factions splintered.
