I was certainly impressed with the yard. Unfortunately, it is near an airport and I was limited to 200 feet in the air. Still a fun yard to see in action. I hope you have a great day Steve.

Excellent video...very informative. The yard was named for John H. Inman, an industrialist who was originally from Tennessee. Inman served as an officer in a Tennessee CSA unit during the Civil War, and later became involved in the iron, steel, and railroad industries. The Atlanta Inman Park neighborhood was named in his honor by the developer. In his later life, he resided in the NYC area and was a commissioner for the city's rapid transit system. He passed away in 1896.

Awesome video! Inman Yard is definitely a huge yard! That NS passenger car and the white shed looking cars on both sides of it are making up one of NS’s Maintenance of Way camp trains, used to house MOW workers as a break when they’re doing a big project on the rails!

Thanks for the great info Alex. I really do appreciate it. I thought that car looked like a shed but thought there's no way and I was seeing things.

Great video! I didn't realize how much Inman has been utilized as an intermodal yard, and I live in the Atlanta area. There is also another intermodal yard at Austell about 15 miles west of Inman. I worked strike duty a couple of times in the 1970s at Inman.

Thanks Doug, I do appreciate it. I shot the video first and then tried to research the yard. So, I was shocked to see so much intermodal as well. I didn't realize Austell is so close. I'll have to plan a trip there the next time I make a trip to Atlanta.

Not too many self respecting railroaders would admit to “strike duty” but I imagine you don’t have the railroad retirement that the union railroaders your age enjoy.

If you have any spots in particular, I would love to hear about them. I typically just follow the rail lines in Google Maps and try to find spots that way. Any help would be appreciated.

@@nkyrailfan I must have forgotten to reply but the W&A (CSX) northwest from Atlanta to Chattanooga is pretty scenic and parallels 75 in some spots, closer to US 41 if you ever do chasing. I live in Marietta so I am more familiar with that. I grew up in Conyers on the former Georgia railroad main to Augusta, but when I visit home I don't see as many trains and its mostly single tracked east of Lithonia. There are some nice shots in Conyers and Covington, a coal tower in Madison, mostly intermodals bypassing Savannah from Augusta. I used to have a part time job that let me take time along NS coming up from Inman to Austell along South Cobb Drive and Buckner road. If no one else had answered --- Inman park is a neighborhood on the East side of Atlanta (closer to Conyers), Inman yard is on the nw side of the city. I actually checked my books and I don't know why the yard was named Inman. Maybe the Southern HS has information. But yes Inman is a famous business man from Atlanta and several places around are named after him.

That NS passenger car appears to be part of a wreck train as it has a number of all white specialized cars commonly seen on wreck trains. It may have been retrofitted to a kitchen and dining area. Sometimes wreck trains are onsite for days or weeks at a time.

When Norfolk Southern first started transition to Atlanta, they originally purchased the former southern region AT&T building at 1200 Peachtree Street. They even had an engine in the main lobby. They since have moved from 1200 P'tree to 680 West Peachtree Street as shown at the end of the video.

Thanks for the great info. I was able to stop by the previous headquarters in Norfolk and I may have seen what you're talking about. The company had a small museum set up. It also had the cab of an SD or GP engine set up that you could take a picture in. I wonder if that's the same thing?

A statue of Samuel Spencer, first president of the Southern Railway, was located near the entrance of the Peachtree St. NS office building. I understand that it is now situated in a garden area of the Atlanta History Center. Ironically, Spencer was killed in a wreck on the tracks of his own railroad in Virginia.

CSX in Tilford Yard rebuilt the new Transflo yard at the southern end out of sight from where you took the video. They sold the bigger northern section to a developer who built the not opened Amazon fulfilment center visible in your video.

Thank you very much for the info Philip. I do appreciate it. I thought that it looked more like a distribution center instead of a Transflo facility. I'll have to see if I can spot the CSX facility the next time I'm down there. Thanks again and have a great day.

I believe there was a drone video up on the web of the large CSX intermodal facility at Fairburn....about 20 miles south of Atlanta along the old A&WP RR. The NS intermodal facility is west of town at Austell....near Six Flags....on the route to Birmingham.

Unfortunately, there isn't really a great spot. It's pretty tucked away. If you try parking at the humane society nearby and then walking to the Marietta Rd NW bridge, that would probably give you the best view.
