The reason every country had so many different models of different things in WWII was always 95% of the time because they built one thing, saw a military or consumer bit of hardware elsewhere and realized it would just be a little welding to smack em together. Add maybe a few armour plates around the sides, and hey that does the job. Get a guy to put it on a blueprint somewhere, who cares if a panel or two is off. The big reason, past general complexity of modern vehicles, why tanks take so much longer to upgrade, is because a long amount of peacetime development with the right ideas mostly figured out means that theres no logical way to just slap something on and improve it. Even then, you still say the same idea happening with stuff like Russia's 'box tanks' in the current Ukrainian War. Just slap some shit on stuff that already works.

When Odessa was encircled by Romanian and Italian troops odessa tractor factory produced about 120 improvised thanks of two types: NI-1 armed with machine guns produced 55-69 depending on the source, and NI-2 armed with a 45mm anti-tank cannon (NI-2 unlike NI-1 didn't have any rotating turret)

Such practice was widespread at the beginning of the WW2. To be frank I don't understand why we produced so many improvised tank having superiority in real tanks.

@@flosev75 because we had 22k thanks on 22th of June 1941, only 15k were left by September. Also Soviet industry has always been mobilisable. Tractor factories were supposed to start producing tanks in case of a war. That's what they did. But since the war started unexpectedly, they were unable to switch to T-28 and started producing makeshift stopgap armoured vehicles. We had more tanks, but Germans have a superior doctrine. Our tank corps could have an operational speed of 7-10km/h, German Panzer divisions had operational speed of 12-15km/h (operational speed is the speed of a unit as a whole and is identified by cruise speed of the slowest unit in a formation. They were instances (like battle of Dubno-Brody) where soviet tank corps had to abandon broken down thank, all of their artillery, just be in time to meet the germans at Dubno, but even though they had to abandon a lot they still were a little too late and instead of defending against Germans, they have to counter attack them, and failed, because they lacked infantry and artillery support. Totally Luftwaffe air dominance also didn't help

​@@ConeOfArc maybe he meant the НИ-1(Na ispug-1), which was created during fights for Odessa in order to scare the enemy infantry into thinking that soviets had actual tanks(while in reality it was essentially a tractor with thin steel-wood/rubber-steel "composite" armour and its "guns" were, in most cases, just 7.62mm machineguns hidden in big gun-looking cases) and to have SOMETHING even slightly armoured before actual tanks from evacuated factories would arrive

What's crazier still is these improvised tank Destroyers actually did score many, many kills against German tanks. Turns out a tractor works great for moving an anti-tank gun into position.

У них самих бронетехника была чем-то похожим, так что они действительно решили, что на них двинули танки в большом количестве. Румынов в своё время даже не испугали Т-34, они были в полном изумлении. Так что трактора с пушкой вполне укладывали для них в концепцию "Это танк и его надо бояться". Эти машины были применены в обороне Одессы и некоторых других городов, но название НИ-1 и НИ-2 они получили именно там. НИ означает "На испуг" (Na ispug) - ставка была на то, что враг испугается едущих на них с прожекторами и сиренами трактора, которые ещё и стреляют. Ставка оправдалась, но ты не можешь всерьёз рассчитывать на то, что всю войну враг будет тебя пугаться. Страны Оси адаптировались и понадобилась настоящая бронетехника, чтобы выбить из них дерьмо и желание воевать

Is it just me that wants to see the militaries of the world explore more of the medium caliber guns? They're just really interesting for IFVs and light vehicles. Same with two cannon vehicles like the M6 or the AMX-30 (105 and 20mm). Obviously on an MBT having a second cannon would prove as a weakspot but on a light vehicle it'd be cool to have a cannon for antitank and a smaller caliber autocannon next to it for light vehicles and infantry. Similar to the BMP-3!

Basically, the big problem with multi turret tanks is that everything on a tank is a weight trade off. Thus, the more you try and multirole a tank, the worse you make it against something that does not multirole, as it can spend more resources on being a single idea tank. The idea of the MBT came from the realization that making a tank that focused around speed, with a gun capable of an anti tank role, with an anti-personnel top machine gun, and with multiple ammo types so you can do an anti infantry role with the cannon, basically meant the tank could do everything and still be a tank destroyer. And once your medium tank can be a tank destroyer, whats the point in anything but that? Heavy tanks will still lose to the cannon. Light tanks cant do anything because you ramped the armour up over the old medium tanks. And a dedicated tank destroyer is just a more fragile MBT. If you try and say, plop a big extra autocannon for anti-infantry support. Sure it might be 50% better at that. But now its heavier so its slower. Or its got shittier armour and dies to other MBTs and AT missiles more. Its suddenly lost the reason the thing naturally solved multiple problems at once. ie that its fast enough to negate something else thats fasts advantage, strong enough to negate a heavier tanks advantage, and capable of killing anything anyway.

A 57mm gun was adequate for the Panzer III and IV tanks of that time frame but were woefully inadequate to deal with Panther and Tiger tanks that appeared later in the war.
