Given how more T34s were lost in combat than the entire number of tanks Germany had in 1942, I’d dare say you were given the short hand using the T34. Also, the T34 was not as good as what many believe in terms of tanks, to put it mildly. Survivability was incredibly poor for a number of reasons, from the cramped insides to the heat-treated armor being notorious for “Spalling” - where pressure causes the metal to shatter and fling sharp shards of metal inside to shred the crew.
@joost11203 ай бұрын
That's a load of propaganda though. A huge amount of these lost T-34's were repaired, as the Soviets had many repair facilities. We also have good data on these repairs, as it was used to evaluate the T-34's performance and eventual upgrades in the T-34-85. On the contrary, German tank losses were only counted as a loss if the vehicle could not be recovered and repaired. Most impacts on the T-34 were done by guns ranging from 20 to 50mm, with uncapped rounds. That's where face-hardened armour shines, especially on sloped surfaces, and it significantly increases survivability. The harder outer surface breaks up the projectile, while the softer steel behind it can absorb any remaining energy. Against larger caliber rounds with hardened caps, the harder surface becomes a liability. This isn't really much of a problem, as only 10% of penetrating hits were caused by 75 and 88mm capped rounds. The T-34 didn't have bad armour by any stretch of the imagination, especially when it was first introduced. Damage reports on repaired vehicles also show that spalling was not nearly as big of an issue as you claim it to be. In a report on the damage on 154 T-34's, only 6 out of 534 impacts caused spalling. 14 impacts ruptured or fractured the armour, which can tell you a bit about the hardness of armour. Seeing as only 14 out of 534 impacts caused such damage, the armour's hardness is at a sufficient level, and not too hard. Germany also used the same face-hardened armour, but I don't hear people screaming about that either. And funnily enough, Germany's use of face-hardened armour is a much more important point of criticism, as their armour was intended to resist primarily larger 75, 76 and 85mm rounds. Face-hardened armour significantly decreased the survivability of their tanks, as they had tested the armour with rolled homogeneous armour before hardening it, merely relying on the assumption that face-hardening it would improve it to acceptable levels. This proved to be quite disastrous on the Panther and King Tiger, as their sides were weakened by face-hardening. This allowed Shermans and T-34-76's to penetrate them from very long ranges, while the same thickness of armour without face-hardening would've required them to come within a few hunderd meters. It didn't matter for the T-34-85 and IS-2 though, as both were capable of getting through regardless. And they famously demonstrated this at the King Tiger's debut on the Eastern front in August 1944, killing 14 out of the 501st Panzer battalion's 30 king tigers in just 3 days. Don't let yourself be guided by propaganda or fandoms. The T-34 was evaluated by the Germans, and they concluded that it was a capable tank, requiring new weapons and tactics to fight. The Finns, Brits and Americans also evaluated the T-34, and they universally concluded that it was a very capable tank. Both the Finns and Americans also said the gunner's optics were one of the best sights they had seen on a tank yet, on par with the 7.5cm PaK 40's sights.
@openthinker65623 ай бұрын
@@joost1120 Honestly, the reason why I wrote this was because a lot of “propaganda” and “fandoms” harp on about the T34 being an excellent and beloved tank that was ahead of its time, but it feels super exaggerated. Sloped armor wasn’t unique to the USSR, several earlier British and French designs utilized sloped armor much earlier. I also go off of the accounts of Soviet tankers, who agree that the T-34 SUCKED to fight with. Its sloped armor made the tank smaller, but thus much more cramped, and it wasn’t as reliable as many like to claim. It wasn’t helped by the rush of the USSR pushing the tank into production, but the general culture that it came from just sucks when it comes to the consideration of the crew. There is a reason why every single Soviet tanker who used an American or British lend-lease tank has never said they wanted the T-34, despite it being supposedly superior.
