The Roland SP-202 is an awesome sampler when used with a midi keyboard to play into a DAW . Once your samples are chopped and truncated you are ready to go. What is convenient about this box is its portability with a Mic for female or male singers and your own indoor/outdoor organic sounds. BUILDS your sound palette. Don't under estimate this sampler's potential !! Get your drum, bass, keyboard, synth sounds from multiple sources and make your own sample cd, USB kits ! Label the cd too.

Bought an sp202 in mint condition with memory card more than a year ago. Played around on it maybe 5 times and since then it’s just been sitting on top of one of my monitors as a constant reminder of how much of a sampler junkie i am. My main weapon is and has always been the mpc2k classic, but alongside my mpc i use a SP 555 wich was my first hardware sampler. The main thing that i like about my sp202 is the pitch function and the filters. The sampling rates (lofi & lofi 2) are for my taste and my production style way too gritty, and i always beleived nothing could be “too gritty”. The Sp 555 and Mpc2000 classic are a match made in heaven. Through the years they have know eachother they have become tight brothers. When the Mpc isn’t able to pull off stunts(recording in lofi or adding onboard effects) his bro the SP 555 stands up for him and when the SP 555 isnt able to perform a whole show alone(trim samples visually and precisely, sequence precisely, pitch samples and the list goes on...) his big bro the Mpc2000 pulls up and holds his hand to the finish line. Sadly, for quite a while now i have been thinking about putting their mentally challenged brother the sp202 up for adoption, maybe somewhere he will be able to play with other special children but i always come to the conclusion that i can’t split them up. He likes being there amongst his siblings, even though he never gets picked for the team to play. Me and the sp202 will forever hold on to the hope that he will one day find his purpose in life.

I don’t have an SP or any kind of sampler with pads I’ve got an Akai S series so although I’m not too well versed on the Pad devices I’m guessing multiple samples were resampled to one pad to get like 5 at the same time. Looks like max 2 or 3 at once?

Dope! Love to see other young cats hitting old school hardware. I'm somewhat new to the hardware aspect, but since making beats just on the pc left me uninspired at times, I thought I'd step it up. I had the MPC Live in mind, but am also very attracted to the SP404 (I know 2 totally different units) due to it's character and muddiness it adds to the sound. Just to hear a more experienced opinion, since you are a sampler collector, would you rather go for the SP or the MPC, if you didn't have any of these? And please don't say both, I know it would be perfect haha
@chrisgalactic5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response bro. The SP sequencer are okay compared to something like an MPC, normally I would say MPC but recently I would choose the SP and this is why. If you happen to get really good at the SP with it's limitations and somewhat strange sequencer those beats would sound a lot lot better than anything you make on an MPC. Theirs more creativity and more difficulty to making beats on the SP but I find that truly important when working on a sampler

I have one and along with the Boss DR202 drum machine (that also goes with the sp202) which has amazing old skool hip hop, electro, DnB, Jungle, Rock, Jazz, Funk and Techno drum kits and the Acoustic Bass sounds are amazing on it not to mention they're adjustable and can store your own versions. @toboemusique5 жыл бұрын
is the pitch the same as the 404 ? like does it keep the same tempo with higher/lower notes or does the tempo change too ? I dont like the fact that the 404 keeps the same length of a loop after puting on the pitch so I wonder if the 202/303 has a REAL pitch mode. Thank for your help mate, keep going !
@chrisgalactic5 жыл бұрын
The 202 does have time stretching which you can adjust to match the tempo but it also has a real pitch mode that changes the overall key of the sample you are using. The SP 404SX pitch is a little useless at times because it does such huge jumps with slight movement's that it's really annoying when you're trying to adjust it to make it sound decent. So to answer your question the 202 pitch is more natural sounding and more pleasant and doesn't time stretch to match the tempo unless you select the Time button. Hope I answered your question.
