I got mine for $50 off of craigslist, and it has a few dead pixels, but I feel like I really made out. This is my very first sampler, and having tried and been intimidated by the 404, I love how accessible and easy it is. So glad I was able to get my foot in the door with this one

Super interesting with the through. So sample rate is actually an effect while Sp202 it really is the sample rate your recording at. Let 202 go once and bought it again for lofi 1 pitch/shift and filter 1. Just can’t be beat when you need them.

I never used the lo-fi setting when I had the SP-202. I spent ages trying to find a compatible CF card and when I found out it could only play one sample off the CF card at a time was when I decided to get rid of it. They over-sold the features. It wasn't clear in the manual about it's limited polyphony. I don't regret selling it. It sounded good but was just too limited and trying to get a clean loop was a pain in the arse.

Yeah its definitely something that needs to be used with another bit of gear. Either a newer SP or a laptop. Its more of a processing unit for me. A very slow one...lol

@MicrophonesInTheTreesАй бұрын
Advantages of the MS1 over the 202 - A) more options for triggering samples; B) the sample rate/global pitch on the MS-1 is sampling AND playback, so you can tune samples you have to the sample you're taking; C) extra memory is much cheaper (PCMCIA to CF adaptor plus late 90s 20mb Sandisk CF = £15) ; D) numeric start/end (altho see below); E) MUTE GROUP!!!; F) volume setting per sample; G) in-sample looping; H) basic chop; I) linear real-time sequencer. Advantages of the 202 over MS1 - A) filter/effects; B) BPM read out; C) Mark button is actually a nice easy way of setting start/end; D) sample reverse; E) grungier sample rates can sound 'boss' for some things. My entire set-up is an MS-1, SP202, Lexicon LXP-5 and Boss Micro BR. I build up tracks by multi-tracking, playing 'live'.

Lo-fi 2 isn't useless. Try this... take a sample (using auto sample) with standard, then do the same sample on lo-fi 2, again using auto. Then use the LPF on the lo-fi 2 sample. What are you left with? MONSTER bass. Trigger the Standard and lo-fi 2 sample together and you have a PHAT sample.

The MS-1 is more portable, and takes up less space in your studio setup. I believe the MS-1’s will become more valuable than the sp202 soon. They are a little more difficult to come across these days, so they already may be.

Long 2 is the secret sauce when sampled in hot at peak level 16. (The sequencer is slept on too and, the through). The analog to digital conversion followed by resampling into an MPC 2KXL also hot makes it priceless. I never cared for the 202 personally and, waited years for the SP404MK2 to pair with the MS-1 and, MPC 2KXL via midi. Glad you understand how dope the MS-1 is.

Okay.. I have the sp202! With the memory card. My first and only sampler to date . Being a bass guitar player I hadn't a clue about samplers , until my keyboard muso friend pointed me in the direction of these samplers . A few years back .I'm not a beat maker - more effects with metal or ambient music . I loved the look of the sp202 and purchased that . However, I believe that the sp404sx is the way to go for my requirements ..only because it is more up to date and built in a similar manner . I too am thinking of offloading the sp202 if my bid for the 404sx is successful today 🤔😼. Some people on forums say " keep it / why not use both?" Not sure . Your thoughts ? Anyway ; did you sell yours ? In your shoes as it's all sp ..I'd keep it just for the collection and the name of your channel . Cheers 😺

The 202 is very limited thats all I'll say. I've kept mine and use it now and again but the MS-1 is my go-to now for that kind of sound. The SX is a massive improvement in terms of FX etc but the later models don't come with the option to use different sample rates which makes the 202 so useful. If thats not the reason you need it, the sx will be a lot more useful to you
