Here are episodes 1 & 2 of "The Space Giants" translated into English. Episode 1 aired in Japan on Monday, July 4th, 1966. The 2nd episode aired on Monday, July 11th, 1966. Part of episode 3 is in here too. I'll pick up where we left off next week with 2 more complete episodes. You will find better visual quality of this show out there, but it won't be as complete with as much of the English tracks as my version of the episodes here, which I may upgrade in the future.
NOTE: "The Space Giants" episode 2 starts at the 22:29 mark.
NOTE: "The Space Giants" episode 3 starts at the 47:20 mark. It will conclude next week here on this KZbin channel "The Nostalgic Podblast." ‪@thenostalgicpodblast‬
ORIGIN OF THIS TV SERIES:
From my 16mm projector reel to reel film library & video vault comes this collection of complete episodes of "The Space Giants" which are translated into English. 52 half hour episodes of this series were filmed in Japan in 1966-1967 which were translated into English in 1972 when this Japanese show "Ambassador Magma Taishi" was originally retitled "Monsters from Outer Space" for the first syndicated TV run in the U.S.A. Defunct television show syndicators Lakeside Television took over as the show's distributors in 1977 when Lakeside re-titled the series "The Space Giants." This show aired on WTCG/WTBS "Superstation" 17-Atlanta at 3:30 PM after "Speed Racer" & before "The Flintstones." There was a final 52nd episode of "The Space Giants" which concluded the ongoing storyline with an exciting and satisfying climax.
This show was very popular with many Generation X kids of a certain age who were glued to their televisions watching this monster action after school.
The very first episode of this show debuted in Japan on Monday, July 4th, 1966. In Japan the original title of this series was "Ambassador Magma Taishi" ("Magma" is "Goldar" in the English version which is not a literal translation). The villain "Rodak" in English is "Goa" in Japanese, though that also is not a literal translation. In 1972 Peter Hernandez & his team from the "Speed Racer" audio translation team began adapting "The Space Giants" to an English-speaking audience. All of the English translation in this reel was produced in 1972. When "Star Wars" was such a success at the box office in 1977, Ted Turner's WTCG/WTBS national cable network "Superstation 17" began airing "The Space Giants" afternoons on their local Atlanta, GA & national U.S. cable network until 1981 which at that point in time in the late 1970's was distributed by Lakeside Television out of New York City.
In 2014 I edited & produced a set of all 52 half-hour episodes of "The Space Giants" using as much of the English translated tracks that I could find, some tracks from Betamax tapes of WTCG/WTBS airings & some tracks of the English version from 16mm film reels. The video elements in my unofficial English DVD set were from Japanese laserdiscs which were in Japanese with no English tracks. Since then "Ambassador Magma Taishi" was released onto Blu Ray in high definition in Japan. There is a rumor that all of the English "Space Giants"' tracks by the Peter Hernanez translation team are lost. Hopefully, the original English tracks for "The Space Giants" are not lost.
So, what I have done is combine Japanese laserdisc video footage, Betamax & VHS recordings of WTCG/WTBS airings between 1977-1981 with 16mm film footage from my collection to present this show in the best and most complete way possible to an English-speaking audience. Only here will you see the "next week" trailers to "The Space Giants." In the future, I may re-edit this series using the high-definition Japanese Blu Ray release to upgrade the visual quality of this presentation.
"The Space Giants" series in 2024 currently is in the public domain. Enjoy!
