The tiny medieval town of Granadilla, Spain, was founded in the 9th Century AD. Up until the late 1950s it was home to around 1,000 people. Then, within a 10-year period, everyone was forced to leave. It has remained abandoned ever since.
The town had been scheduled to flood, due to a new dam that had been built by Francisco Franco's regime, and the former inhabitants were forced to leave their homes and relocate.
But now, more than 50 years later, the flood waters have still not arrived - yet the original inhabitants of Granadilla are still forbidden from returning to their former homes.

Videos like this do a good job of garnering sympathy but sometimes avoid facts…. Like the fact that the town IS still in a floor zone, it wasn’t a lie, the roads leading to the town washed away. That’s the reason it was never reversed. Amazing what a little research can teach

The government needs to return the properties back to the villagers and/or their descendants. They should also set up some sort of memorial paying respect to all the villagers that were forced out and as a reminder of what dictatorship looks like.

@@rockon609 still in a flood zone? Yet it hasn't flooded in all these decades and is used as a tourist plus campsite. You are right in that the flood zone thing wasn't a lie but as the video states it is not due to an eminent flood risk but rather due to the 1955 documents which declared it a flood zone. The low lying access roads (specifically) were flooded because the reservoir was filled sufficiently to do so but not to the point where the village itself would be flooded. The village was literally been declared a historical site decades ago with extensive restoration work and active gardening since. The village is also well above the reservoir and dam thanks to it having originally been built up ontop a big hill and is in no way at risk of flooding. Even if this village were to flood then by that point it wouldn't even matter since many major settlements hundreds of kilometers away would already be underwater by that point.

@jugjivan

@@generalpopcorn6427 there is literally road access and very little risk of it flooding since it is above the reservoir. If somehow the road access that they do have is lost then it won't be a long term deal. If it does become a long term deal (as highly unlikely as that is given the where the water levels are) due to whatever reason then they will still be safe and can survive by becoming an island village while the water levels become a national and potentially globally worrying issue.

The qualification of GRANADILLA and its municipal area as FLOODING AREA by the Government of Spain since 1955, during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, IS STILL IN FORCE. The inhabitants of Granadilla have been ignored by the Government of Spain and by the Junta de Extremadura, something incomprehensible within a DEMOCRACY that prides itself on a minimum of respect for HUMAN RIGHTS

What is the reason the government has not returned Granadilla? I see a lot of complaining in the comments, but no one seems actually know the full story. It would be interesting to know the real reason for the inaction. (I'm *not* asking for raving lunatics to rant about how government should be abolished).

It is a good question that you should ask the Government of Spain to see if they answer it for you and that way we all find out What is evident is that, if the reason for the forced expropriation was that it was declared a FLOOD ZONE, in the year 1955, that condition is not met and they should have acted accordingly many years ago.

I already know that there are expressions that have no translation between languages and it is correct to adapt these expressions to the translated language. But now everything is simply changed and almost nothing of what is said in Spanish is properly translated. Any native person in English that knows the Spanish language will know that the translation is not correct. The case is understood, naturally, but for me the words are important. If the Queen of England speaks, I want to know what she says, but also as she says.

Really bizarre translation. Also at 4:01 the describe the lady as a 'former neighbour of Granadilla'. Seems like they tried to translate from the Spanish 'vecinos', in which case 'former inhabitant' would have been correct.

The list is too long. I could sit here and give you the names of towns that were seized and flooded by the government all day. There are a bunch of them. That you are not aware of this demonstrates your abject ignorance and cluelessness. The government has an inherent right to take property for public use. LOL you can tell the town has nothing Muslim about it, the castle looks Romanesque or Gothic Christian, the houses don't date back to the time of the Muslim ocupation and the church is baroque. Stop claiming things that you didn't make when 99.99% of the architecture in Spain is not Muslim. The mosques were torn down and churches built on top, only the mosque of Cordoba survives, in Seville they left only the minaret and most originally Moorish castles were heavily remodeled.
