One more thing about the Spark games is the soundtracks are so f*cking good. Like outside of the easy choices of Planetary Stripe and Apocalypse Thruster from 2, it's so hard to rank or even pick favorites because all the tracks are such bangers. And in 1 and 2 Lake hires such a diverse yet cohesive group of artists (3 sizes down quite a bit with Paul Bethers doing most of the tracks). If you aren't interested in playing the games, please at least listen to the soundtracks.

I disagree about Spark 3's complexity being too overwhelming for casual players, and think of it like how 3D Mario has a lot of complex movement mechanics that casuals will never use. You can easily beat Spark 3 without engaging with a lot of the mechanics and optional levels, and even things you have to engage with like the combat gives some leeway to make sure players are familiar by the end (e.g. the game still progressing even if you lose the first 2 Guardian fights). Way easier in my opinion then stuff like SA2 trying to make everything simpler by putting so many actions on the B Button.

It's crazy how much LakeFepard improved over time. I wasn't the biggest fan of BTS and ATS because I felt like there was a lot of sections in the level design where you're just running and nothing is happening. It's the most separation I've ever felt between 2D Sonic's platforming and speed elements. But then playing Spark 1, you notice just how much more dense the level design is and how he blends the two elements together much better and it makes me think that this is the game he wanted to make the entire time. Also my friend and I are super hyped for his next game as F-Zero fans. Great video as always Pariah and hoping your family cat recovers and gets healthy again!

52:47 I see your point about not caring for the world behind Spark the Electric Jester. I’m even inclined to agree somewhat. However, I don’t think that Lake wearing his influences on his sleeve is the issue here. Sonic Team is guilty of this too with their references to other series like Dragon Ball and Star Wars all throughout the Sonic series. Spark simply doesn’t have the “it” factor that a character like Sonic has, and that’s something that I found pretty noticeable even with just watching the footage in this video.
@marsf608023 күн бұрын
I think it's more that Lake is more directly derivative- Death Egg or Super Sonic aside, most Sonic references tend to be a bit more obscured- and also that Lake is referencing popular things in the same medium he's working in, whereas Sonic tends to reference stuff that's often more unknown in the West and that isn't videogames, creating a bigger layer of separation and remixing. Even if Sonic 06 is inspired by Castle of Cagliostro, for instance, just by virtue of one being a game and the other a movie, Kingdom Valley feels a lot more different from Cagliostro; vs Spark 3 being able to just grab Rail Canyon, a level of a game, and make it a level of its game, without needing to transform it much because it's already a level in a game.

The thing that I like the most about Spark 3 in particular is how the major levels are designed to allow for exploration, even when it doesn't really help the player a lot. It feels incredible to launch yourself on top of some random skyscraper on Downtown Dissent that you thought was not supposed to be accessible, simply because you can... just to find a crystal sitting there. I... do hate the vehicles though, especially the hovercraft. I wish those sections didn't exist, although I do appreciate how the car sections can still work without the car. I found the first game mindblowing as well. It has a lot of content for what it is, with so many levels, many of them having multiple sections, and it all rocks if you don't mind all the bugs too much. Thing was made with Multimedia Fusion after all.

If for every amazing game in the series inspired by Sonic, with high-speed platforming amazing combat, and bosses, with robots as enemies and bosses, released in the same year, and contained giant mech battles I had a nickel, I would have two nickels! Which isn't a lot but I'm surprised it happened twice. Well, that's oddly specific. Jokes/memes aside I feel very satisfied now that you played Spark the Electric Jester 3 and Freedom Planet 2. Both games do very different things so it’s hard to directly compare, but I’ll give the tiebreaker to spark 3 simply because the package itself is a lot more impressive given it was only made by one guy and has a lot of content on top of being a 3D game, which takes a lot more effort to make than a 2D one.

Ya kinda hit the head on the nail with that point about the Spark games towards the end there. The biggest reason I’ve largely passed on the Spark series is because they look (and sometimes play) a lot like most Modern Sonic games. And considering that the Sonic series is very clearly mimicking the Spark games in trying to blend action-platformer and character-action games, it kinda makes the Spark games feel even more derivative, even if they (and Freedom Planet) technically did it first. Also, I’m really excited about XF: Xtreme Formula. Never played any of the F-Zero games before, so I’m walking in with very few expectations. But given this is LakeFeperd we’re talking about, I suspect the final product will be very fun and very polished.

I’m a little confused on what you want a Sonic game to be. You say that you don’t want this combat in a Sonic game because it would set it apart from its identity. However that was your main complaint with Sonic x Shadow generations (I know that was before you found the spear gliding, but I assume the sentiment still stands considering it was more of a complaint directed to the stale direction Sonic gameplay was heading to). So would a mechanic like this not qualify as Sonic breaking new boundaries? Or being a new trend setter like it used to be in its early days like you said in one of your other videos? In a sense I’m asking, if Sonic decides to branch out in other directions similar to how they did with combat in Frontiers, would that be a positive in your eyes? (Of course as long as the main mechanic is still platforming and Sonic Team were to keep developing and evolving it as their primary focus)
@Pariah695026 күн бұрын
My issue with Shadow Gens is that it is continuing to hold on to all the bad elements that hold it back, that only exist because of technical limitations of the Dreamcast and flawed design ideas. What I would want Sonic to take from Spark 3 is the fully physics-based, non-scripted movement, the manually controllable camera, and gameplay design that is more nuanced than "Press the button we tell you to press".
@niacinn26 күн бұрын
@ I see, so if a Sonic game were to hit every note in terms of its platforming gameplay, but also introduce new mechanics, like combat, does it necessarily have to be fundamentally alienating to the identity of a Sonic game?
@Pariah695026 күн бұрын

I feel like spark 3's combat leans too heavily into the juggle combos and stylish things tbh... it doesnt really compliment the game all too much. something like ninja gaiden or bayo, that has agressive enemies that limit the players options in different ways to make the player move around and do different techniques wouldve fit way better in my opinion. The juggle combos are awesome and the systems in place are really robust but ultimately I feel like because spark 3's combat is the side thing to a game about going fast (the boses literally grade you on time) the actual core boss and enemy design should demand a lot more form the player, instead of it just being how cool you can juggle the enemy, which it does sometimes. the throwback spark 2 boss and the secret dlc boss lean into having strong patterns and design and its really awesome. edit: opinions on its pitfalls aside I think the actual combat mechanics here are really good and theyre really fun to mess around with and I hope lake evolves it further with whatever spark 4 is gonna be I hope Zucci makes a nice recovery!

I actually think LakeFeperd's 2D level design to be pretty weak overrall. He seems to really like uninteractive straightaways that just happen to be twisty, and there are a lot of repetitive structures in his levels. Like, just pay attention to how many sections with evenly-spaced same-height steps with a few non-threatening enemies there are in this video alone. Not that he's incapable of doing really good 2D level design (After the Sequel is a testament to that). He really did find his footing in 3D though, Spark 2 is very good while 3 is FANTASTIC

In some ways, the twisty straightaways you mention never really went away when Lake moved to 3D, they just work better in that environment since even an empty road can be more engaging in 3D for several reasons

Before the Sequel definitely was not the best fan game at the time in terms of physics and polish. Many fan games even at the time had way better physics. It still was fascinating for being a complete package filled with creativity though.

TBH, as someone who does prefer games that have good visuals, I actually like Spark's design.
@callinater613315 күн бұрын
Yeah I think the criticism is overblown. I don't think the design is great as it's a bit too simple, but I think his design is at least memorable which is a trait you want a mascot character to have. His design could do with a reasonable touchup to look more appealing, but I don't think it needs a complete overhaul.

What I've realised from Spear Gliding in Shadow Generations, the Spin Dash from Frontiers and the Light Speed Dash from Spark 3 is: 1. Players hate air drag but want a way to remove it through skillful play. 2. Players care more about player expression than multiple paths. Not like Spark 2 where you can skip giant chunks of the stage with no effort but moves that slightly remove restrictiveness in gameplay through being skillful. Players would much rather have 1 move that does multiple stuff than multiple moves that do 1 thing. I think the more restrictive and challenging gameplay is in line with the legacy boost games like (Unleashed, Colours, Sonic Generations and Forces) are forced to rely on their level design because their moveset is so restricted and more for reaction timing and when in cased like Forces the level design isn't good the whole thing falls apart. Unleashed is my favourite gameplay style for Sonic so I see the appeal but we should also experiment with more flexible and easier Sonic games like the Adventure games (SA1, SA2, Heroes, Shadow 05 and Sonic 06) also the new age "boost titles (Lost World, Frontiers, Dream Team and Shadow Generations). Even though they have less alternate paths they allow for more player experimentation and games like SA1 are even built around it.

THe thing that off putted me of Jester is how many things are on screen, the HUD, the many things you can collect, way to much, it just confused me, I didn't understood if I had to collect the most things or go fast and skip, maybe if the game introduced them slowly, but then it also throws at you combat, and unlockable stuff etc, less is more is often bullshit but you can't neither just put more and more and more stuff without feeling like a chore for the player to understand everything.

I tried to get into Spark games many times and always gave up. They surfer from "nothing else matters, just go" game design. Because only time attack matters, there's zero incentive to engage with the level design. This is an issue since the first Spark game, and hasn't been fixed in the 3D games. I which the Spark games had a proper scoring system and a score based Rank system that took advantage of the combat mechanics and platforming. And for the record, I'm also not a fan of Frontiers' Cyberspace levels because of this.
@Lonelysum26 күн бұрын
At least in cyberspace there's stuff to interact with not just get to the end like the spark games even though they are more fun

I mean, that's the point of these games, so I think they just aren't for you I guess.
@Izak_Klark26 күн бұрын
Spark 3 literally has a score ranking system. And the whole "just go" thing is because the games are supposed to be player-driven playgrounds. You do what you find fun or cool. Why would you need an arbitrary system to tell you what to do when you can do whatever you want?
@Nickika26 күн бұрын
@CanaldoZenny You literally have to engage with the level design to go faster

You have a point I hate the claw grip of Spark and wtf am I controlling a camera in a 3d speed platformer that's just wrong on so many levels and the level designs feel to vast empty. Spark 3 has many issues that people overlook. The first time I beat spark 3 I thought it was amazing. But I've tried time attacking and playing it since and it hasn't clicked for me like unleashed adventure 2 and most sonic games even secret rings lmao this game lacks something I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's the identity thing Pariah was talking about

I agree. Spark 3 has a really bad level design issue, which is why I personally feel a casual experience for the games isn't enough to have fun. The BEST way to play the Spark games, especially 3 is by speedrunning them. To get the diamond times and go as fast as possible, you HAVE to interact with the level and utilize the complex mechanics
@Lonelysum26 күн бұрын
@johnnycakemusic4069 yeah the diamond times would be fun but the game doesn't really have a lot of movement options and all the game expect you to use are for speed only If there were movement options like spark 1 maybe I would like it and the other two more

Im pretty conflicted about this game the first playthrough i loved it but playing it after a while theres something off about this game. "automation is good for taking a break from the gameplay." I play games for interactivity. Most of us do. The less automation in my game, the better. This is not a proper justification or defense for automation in Sonic games
