This comes to show that it’s not Sonic that makes us like these momentum based platformers. It’s the game mechanics themselves. Thats why the modern Sonic stuff misses the mark. They lost sight of what made the old school Sonic games fun in the first place.

In my opinion, every Pikmin game is equally as good. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but all of them are very good games.

Trip is also one of my favorites. Best character since Blaze and a top tier character for sure

At least some stuff really try to make the random blue hedgehog puppet feel like the "real sonic" frontiers is a puppet who sometimes feels like sonic, the way he toughs out pain with a smirk without a word, his moves, te way he acts in super, it's an inconsistent puppet but it tried, prime's puppet on the other hand doesn't really go for that feel, which i think is why people are specially pissed by the mis characterization in prime. Also, yeah, hard agree that the official canon barely matters anymore lmfao

this is the main reason why i don't like levelling up in most games. it's just there to waste your time, and i think most designers seem to put them in (much like lives) - just because they can, and because other games they like are good in SPITE of having levelling. i think levelling up is either entirely arbitrary, grindy, and annoying. like lives. adding new abilities wouldn't be tedious, but just boosting the players' stats and then boosting enemies' stats... it all balances out to be meaningless because they all level up so evenly that it just forces the player to either grind which is OPTIMAL BUT BORING, or be underlevelled and make the game more punishing (i guess this is kind of irrelivant, but this video reminded me of that).

Man, this is so strange. The game just looks like an unimaginative rehash, but instead they focused this much on details that hardly anyone notices? Why would they do that? But yes, I think it's interesting.

We dont really need SA2 levels of epic, I think we just need something more like the rush games or Sonic Heroes where we have a lot of great character interactions, we need stories who really show what these characters are, and we don't need epic anime stories to do that, we just need a stpry with good writing, and that can also appeal to general audiences.

I know it's a weird nitpick but why would they introduce new characters instead of using the already dozens they already have?

Bro was playing Sonic games at age 3, before most humans have persistent long term memory. He's been playing Sonic literally as long as he can remember. He never had a chance.

There are some parts of the story that really needed fleshing out (like what the deal was with the black dragon and what Eggman was trying to do with that time-reversing machine), but Takashi Iizuka absolutely cooked with Trip.

I didn't know a lot of these details! That's really cool! But yeah, hard agree on her design not being the strongest, my main problem is actually the face, sonic reptiles like espio and vector have really distinct faces with unique stuff like espio with his horn and how in the classic design his eyes are actually separate, the black around his eyes helps out the design a lot. But Trip has a pointy Mighty-esque nose, regular eyes and even has bits on her head that make it look like ears, she's almost like victim of design template curse where a lot of sonic designs have to be tied down by these basic eye shapes and stuff without a lot of experimentation, which really REALLY sucks 'cause it absolutely harmed my impression of her, to the point i even want her to stay masked, hidden in her shell.

Saying this is the best story since Black Knight is a bold statement, but I genuinely can’t think of any other examples. I knew there was a reason I loved Superstars’ story, thanks for the enlightenment!

I think my one gripe with this new character is her “actual” design. It’s not bad by any means and it is very important to her story, but I think she looks too much like a hedgehog and not enough like the other reptiles, like Espio

Great vid but I'm surprised to see you didn't catch something about Trip's design when you were mentioning how some concept art clearly looks more in-line with Sonics artstyle and better for her. Trip's head in particular looks a lot like modern Amy's and considering this is set before Adventure and Amy and Trip's friendship is very prominent here yet we never see Trip again for the entirety of the modern series, Sonic Team retroactively making it so Amy "remembers" Trip by wearing her hairstyle (quillstyle?) is another great element to this story imo. They actually managed to weave in something new from the classic era that effects modern in a sweet way.

Trip is probably the worst part of Sonic Superstars, even Infinite was better, even the deadly six were better, honestly even Yacker was better. At least they weren't an active hindrance for the entire game. It doesn't even make sense for Eggman to recruit Trip in the first place she's literally just a liability with no redeeming qualities. I don't get why you like this game so much, it's one of the weaker Classic Sonic games IMO.

Honestly, classic sonic should have stayed a thing past as Sega as a franchise has came a long way over the years and moved past that era and Modern sonic is supposed to represent the change of sega chose to make.

I think there is a thing among Sonic fans where they say they like the story of some Sonic game but they mostly mean the plot. When they say "the story of sonic 3 & knuckles is better than that of sonic 2," they're referring to the plot. Of course, people can prefer whatever story they like, but I think this is good to keep in mind when looking at sonic story discussion. Or maybe you're right and this shit just flies over people's heads
