A small correction: Ararat is FAR more important to the Armenian people than is acheived through the Noah's Arc story. Thousands of years before Christ, the Armenian people were "Urartian" - people of the land of "Urartu." Urartu meant "the land that's kind of around Ararat." It's been the focal point of Armenian civilazation since 3000 BC.

That is probably what we would like to believe. In reality he is probably still looking for the answer and probably he will continue to do so. Buddhists & historians say when Buddha attained enligthenment after the gruelling contemplation, he was asked by his disciples - what truth he had found. But he did not give any specific answer, and nowadays I am more inclined to believe that he did not have any specific answer. Sometimes I feel that our lives are just spent looking for answers and while we can spend fruitless hours trying to find those we can also decide to just ignore those recurring questions and carry on with our daily works, still there is no denying that those questions keep on returning and people needs to find answers to those because neither we are sure they are answerable nor we are convinced they are not. This situation has risen probably because human beings are at present at the top of hirerarchy of living species, we are without any potent natural enemy capable of keeping us busy trying to save our existence, something our ancestors had struggled to acheive through trials and tribulations and like most things & actions in the universe even that success of eliminating all natural enemies have probably started to boomerang.

Rare Earth, as a devout Roman Catholic, I must admit this piece is very well done and I applaud your search for the Truth. Relics hold a very time honored tradition in the Christian faith; they are one of the oldest beliefs as our scripture dictates that a man was resurrected by the bones of the prophet Elijah. The idea of Relics themselves predate Christianity. Whether they exist only in the allegorical sense or are active representations of the miraculous which could be confined or unbound to any scientific context, they point out that resurrection is something that is innately held within the human psyche. That is, for as impermanent as mankind truly is, there must be hope that we can somehow transcend the bonds of our mortality. Jesus himself spoke both allegorically and authoritatively, not only was there clear symbolism but also physical determination. The spear in the side by which blood and water flowed is obviously the glaring truth of doubt among his disciples. It was the very mechanism by which Thomas the Apostle doubted the Resurrection yet only a few days later, Thomas himself was running his hands through his own doubt finding there to be more truth in the life of Christ himself. As tradition dictates, Thomas traveled more than any other Apostle, he died in India stoned to death by people who had no context at all whether a spear or even Jesus himself had ever existed. I think your skepticism is appropriate especially in this era where dogma can no longer allow itself to be tied up in superstition. I hope your doubts lead you to more profound truths of the nature and context of God.

@@john.d.rockefeller2538, unfortunately it couldn't have "changed over the thousands of years," simply because the exact same scriptures handed down over those "thousands of years" and all trace fragments are exactly the same as all the writings found in Qumeran in the 60's. If you were handed a death sentence for changing anything while employed to hand copy text, would you do it? Lastly when written prophecy "thousands of years" comes true to every word, how does an inept atheist deal with that? The book of Daniel is an example.

I truly believe that dogma is a necessary mechanism of the human mind; we are unable to understand the universe, and our self-awareness is a bane we must deal with. It is our anomaly in which we are both cursed and blessed and dogma is our simple way to stay sane in the face of the immense beyond we will probably never understand.
@DarkHarlequin
@DarkHarlequin 5 жыл бұрын
It is a coping mechanism with things we don't understand. And those are always plenty not just due to things 'beyond our understanding' but also due to limited capacity and time. I simply can't be an expert at everything. We often assosciate dogmata with blind obedience but a belief in an authority figgure that can explain aspects of our lives we don't understand for us is an essential aspect of compartmentalizing life. Whether that's a minister, a monk, a scientist or a rich guy with a mission. We can't explore everything ourselves. So we need a mechanism to deal with the uncertainty taht creates :-)
@pixlplague

FelKor that's a very interesting take on it. I think however dogma is implicitly somewhat blind, whereas experiencing things vicariously, like us all watching Rare Earth for example, does not necessarily imply tacite absorption of ideas. :)

@DarkHarlequin

pixlplague Well I don't hold Evan as an authority on a field I don't understand. But I get your point. Tiny thought elaboration only if you're interested: I think the difference isn't a s big as you'd think though. What's different is what it takes to convince you of someones authority on answering a question you can't. For some claiming a man hears devine voices is enough for others they need to know the expert dedicated his life to the subject. Yes the foundation of what priests or scientists use to answer a question like 'how was the world created' is very different and their 'expertise' needs to convince you. But once you are convinced of their expertise the difference isn't that big. I don't douvle check if my priest really talks to god but neither do I do my own carbon dating to check the scientists claim. I do trust that my experts knows what he's talking about. Naurally I exaggerated this a little but I think when we condemn dogma (or what's behind it) as 'for stupid/weak people' we fail to udnerstand the purpose it serves. Should we blindly believe explanations? ABSOLUTELY NOT. But we do need to believe something. Sorry for the tiny rant ;-)

As a Christian, as well as a Physics teacher, this is great. When i challenge someone on how sending humans to other planets is a waste of resources when it is more efficient to develop robots to do the job I see the same defiance and shakiness I see in fellow Christians when they lack an answer to a theological question.
@RareEarthSeries
@RareEarthSeries 5 жыл бұрын
I do believe humans have a value robots do not, especially in exploration terms. We should send "poets", so to speak. However, I don't believe that Mars will be the entirely self-sufficient planet civilization that is sold in the 'colonization in the case of a ruined earth'/'all eggs in one basket' ideology. It is 1598 so to speak, and that is proposing setting up a British colony on Antarctica, in case England was destroyed. Not going somewhere closer or easier to supply to test first. While the colony in Antarctica might someday develop the technology required to live there permanently, it would have been in everyone's best interest to try out a colony somewhere less harsh, let's say the Hebrides/Moon in this analogy, and work forward from there. In our generation and lifetimes, Mars can only ever be treated as a relic, promising the advancement of science well into the future. A relic in a forward direction. We, those who want that science fiction future plan - the star trek dreamers, the MarsOne hopefuls, etc., give that relic power. We once did it with the moon, but when we got there the power dissipated. Mars became a new standard of the human species. But it is a lie. A noble lie. Perhaps an accidental lie. But also a lie giving us a target to shoot for. I don't by definition dislike the lie, frankly speaking. Something has to fill the dogmatic void the death of religion has left behind. This is better than most. I think a future where science is given more due has much more merit than our current system. But it too will have its downsides, reliquaries, and preachers. The science fiction future isn't necessarily sold by Musk directly, but it is placed upon him and he runs the lie as anyone in his position has before him. A new Edison, selling Teslas.

Interesting video, I liked the points you made, and especially the part from 11:11 onnwards However I have to disagree with the point you made about elon musk at 8:50 and your comment above. There are many reasons for colonising mars rather than the moon, such as the presence of an atmosphere, a day/night cycle similar to that on earth and a gravitational field closer to that of earth. For further information: space.nss.org/the-case-for-colonizing-mars-by-robert-zubrin/ This thread brings up some good points: www.reddit.com/r/space/comments/2qbthq/why_is_everyone_so_eager_to_colonize_mars_while/ As well as article: qz.com/1105031/should-humans-colonize-mars-or-the-moon-a-scientific-investigation/ I would really appreciate a response, and hopefully this helps.

Joel Reid at present robots are the better alternative because we don't have the level of technology it would require to keep someone in suspended animation for that length of time. The robot, by comparison, can refuel on the vessel's solar power and operate just often enough to stay in working condition, avoid hazards, and do maintenance on the ship. In fact we could make them better thinkers and improvisers than real people.

But Evan was using Stalinism as a snapshot of a greater reality of atheism in general - while Christianity has its relics, the people who created those relics aren't Christianity - but atheists generally do heavily subscribe to the myths of progress, you need look no further than science fiction. For the record, I am not a theist and have never been religious, so I am not trying to bash atheism for the benefit of religion or anything like that.

Seekarr The thing is that There is no Myth of progress; comparing what science fiction depicts sa the future to what actually comes out in `20 years is laughable for a couple of reasons. First off, it's FICTION, not meant to be factual or realistic. Second, the items depicted in science fiction often end up inspiring people in the future to create that very product. On to the main topic; We are living in an age of all time human excellence. Crime, death, rape, war, poverty, disease, famine, and slavery are at all time lows. We have a fantastic understanding of the human body to the point where the average lifespan is double that of our fore-bearers not 3 generations ago. General education is at an all time high, and the world is working towards leaving the planet to settle and spread ourselves out. Humanity is doing great, contrary to the news' depiction of the modern world. We make progress towards a more prosperous future every day. Just because you don't personally get a physical present every day doesn't mean that we aren't making progress. We are in an age where we are straining to shake the shackles of the Gods, and we are reaching for the stars to become Gods ourselves. As Kubrick once said "However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light".

_ Wayfinder _ You're talking about actual progress that has occurred - not myths of progress of what is to come, of which there are plenty. One example was the Stalinist myth described in this video. As for science fiction: there are plenty of people who believe that we're going to discover warp drives or hyperdrives and bring a reality to what's depicted in Star Trek. Plenty who believe "once we screw up this planet, we'll all 'exodus' and go to other planets."

Yeah, I agree with you, FirewolfQuasar. I absolutely loved this video, and the way he shone light on all of our lies. But when it comes to space exploration, that is literally a pragmatic way for us to not die with our planet. However, in order to get the greater masses to want to set foot on other planets, a dogma or a lie might be needed. That is what makes this topic so interesting, because we can clearly see the viability of the historical lies even today!

It's not even a lance really. It is too wide to be a useful spearhead, and there would have certainly not been a cross cut into a Roman spear at that time period. The cross wasn't a religious symbol yet, and the Romans weren't exactly preforming some ritualistic killing. To them it would have just been another dissident to put down; it had happened plenty of times before this.

Well, jesus wasnt a big deal for the romans back then. In their eyes he's been just another lunatic claiming to be a prophet. And his marvelous feats were bound to be exaggerated in one form or another. Him curing a blind person was probably wiping sand from the eyes of an elder or something like that. As Wayfinder said: It happened before. As time progressed people came to believe in his idea of charity. Another religion was born.

Evan, I would be very interested in your (and perhaps your father's) take on the viability of Moon colonization vs Mars - my understanding is that while they both have the presence of water, the moon's inability to hold an atmosphere and the resulting massive temperature swings would make it a worse candidate for a sustainable manned colony. Yes, it'd be closer to service from the Earth, but the trip is still days at a minimum, so emergency travel would still be relatively long and involved. The primary cost barrier to travel within the solar system is escaping the Earth's gravity well, so once you're out far enough, t's not that much more to go to Mars than the Moon. Very interested in your response, hope you see this!
@KrKrp0n3
@KrKrp0n3 5 жыл бұрын
I also believe much more in cislunar space, but first and foremost as a place for industry, not as a place where humans would choose to live if it wasn't for their job. The moon seems like a terrible place for colonization for many reasons. For one we really don't know much about the quantities of water on it. We don't even know for sure yet if we can easily use it to fuel rockets (although that seems likely), sustaining an entire human colony might simply be impossible. And not just water, many lighter elements probably don't exist in sufficient quantities on the moon either. Big ones being carbon and nitrogen. We kind of need those. An industry outpost akin to stations in the antarctic or offshore oil rigs would be fine with having the essentials shipped to it, but there's really no reason to set up shop there voluntarily. The long lunar night is hugely inconvenient for many reasons one of which you already mentioned. Others are solar power and added difficulty in growing crops. Artificially lighting plants requires energy that's going to be hard to come by in total darkness unless someone cracks fusion and most plants don't like hibernating for weeks on end in total darkness. That could probably be worked around in various ways, but it's certainly a challenge and challenges mean higher cost. There is already doubt if the 38% gravity on Mars are sufficient for upkeep of human health, but the Moon's gravity almost certainly isn't. And then there's the issue of lunar dust. Mars has wind which makes the dust particles rounder and less abrasive, Moon dust you really want to avoid. Yeah, the moon is going to be an invaluable asset if we ever become a space faring species, but it's garbage for colonization. You'd be better off building space stations in LEO space if you already have to import everything.
@ixian_technocrat
@ixian_technocrat 5 жыл бұрын
There's no point to colonize any planet or moon. A manned base or city on Mars would be self sufficient, so if that's the case why bother to fixate it on a rock? Just put the base/city in space and now you can also move it around. Gravity wells are also a pain in the butt to get out of. The Soviets were trying this with the MIR space-station program, while the Americans were wasting money on landing men on a useless rock to do .. what? The exact things that those men did on the Moon, the Soviets also did with robots. It's because the USA won the Cold War that they could accentuate their victories in the Space Race while diminishing those of the USSR. The victor writing history also meant writing our culture. And now most people are left with an irrational view of space colonization: that big rocks, just like our own, have some intrinsic value, while ignoring the primary advantage of space travel - limitless freedom.
@KrKrp0n3
@KrKrp0n3 5 жыл бұрын
A space station that isn't in the near vicinity of some large rock will never be self sufficient. You need raw materials, likely to be mined from asteroids or maybe even distant moons like Titan. So until we've got regular and cheap asteroid mining and extremely large scale on orbit construction going on, Mars is the better choice for colonization.

In the end these three options all have valid arguments to them, each having their own advantages and their own disadvantages. Right now it's kind of hard to really say for sure which one is better, many people have various opinions on why one is better then the other in their opinion... But well, in the end one could say we haven't really tested it out. It's hard to take in to account every factor after all and choosing the best option. Still one thing is clear for all of them, before we can even really leave the start line travel to space must be made far cheaper. So in that respect this second space age will help, and with it our abilities to explore the solar system will expand and help determine which if any of those options were right. Perhaps they all are, perhaps we'll end up just doing all three. Or perhaps we'll do none of them for some reason or the other. I think it will be interesting to see which way it will go.
@plumsink
@plumsink 5 жыл бұрын
One main problem is that Mars is a year away or at best six months away with current technology. A lot can happen in a year, and you can get a lot of opportunities for radiation exposure in a year. Mars has the disadvantages of an atmosphere and few of the advantages of one, you still have to use a heat shield but parachutes alone won't land you. Mars is in a large gravity well, whereas the Earth-Moon libration points are on the superhighways of space and it would take very little energy to get resources to and from the asteroids and the Moon. A space colony at L4 or something isn't as sexy as bootprints on Mars though, which is why NASA and others will continue to pursue the less viable option (Mars) instead of the more viable option (space colony at a libration point and a robotic resource transportation system to get stuff there from the Moon and the asteroids.)

All I'm saying that any actual boat that may have been written about as the Ark has probably long since rotted away into dirt. As a Christian though, this is ok. Because not only does the Lord say, "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust", wouldn't lusting over a bit of boat, no matter how holy, count as idolatry?

But in no way am I claiming are they intended as deceit, nor even really 'fooling ourselves' (for the most part), just the same kind of invention that goes with lies, and fiction. My comment is just about how these things all involve invention and belief, and it's interesting territory.

This channel gets so unexpectedly deep sometimes but I have to agree with all of it. We are limited creatures with limited understandings and we try to fill in the pieces in ways that make us feel better religious or not.

The spear is a metaphor. It was made of light and fire and it enlightened the receiver whom was the one called the Davidic One. Meaning the one with the highest level of influence which is drawn from having the highest level of consciousness in a particular realm - Earth in our case. The pearced one is Goddess Nemesis reincarnation St Padre Pio. She is back again as a woman this time and is know in the Ether or in between lives as "the most clean one" Jesus on the other hand translates to Lord/Master is salvation. The Greek Goddess Nemesis is also known as Lady Justice, or the most feared of the gods.

Though I should add, Musk is not lying. He merely says that we need to be extra-planetary as a species to survive, considering our propensities. I'm sure he would agree that we should establish a Moon base, especially considering that the Moon probably has the requisite propellant locked up in its polar caps to fuel our ships to Mars. Your remarks are interesting food for thought, though.

Wow ... the Elom Musk reference is interesting. The one comment I would like to add is that Musks work undeniably makes the world a better place (aspecially with Tesla, SpaceX too but is harder to see it). And not only in a 'feel better' manner, but actual technology. Wheras the liar about the spear did not fix global warming or starvation or any other real physical issue that might have been a problem then. Therefore, even though the comparison is interesting and thought provoking (which is great, and I appreciate it) it is not entirely fair. Great video, I am glad that you did not get scared for poking at the icon of 21st century :)

Protestant here: relics fascinate me because A) Even if they are authentic (which they aren't), they shouldn't have any religious significance... I am confident theologically without having to rely on old pieces of wood in a cathedral somewhere and B) even though they are obviously fascimiles of the biblical objects they purport to be, many of these relics are neat historical pieces because although they aren't 2000 years old, they are hundreds of years old. Great video.

Lost me a bit on the Musk part (don't consider myself a fanboy either for what it's worth). Musk wanting to go to Mars has less to do about the advancement of humanity, and more to do with being a backup for humanity (he's said as much in numerous interviews anyway). Mars is a reasonable conclusion to be the best place to setup a long term backup society as well given its resources, proximity and more (in comparison) favourable conditions for supporting human life.
@RareEarthSeries

In 1896, if someone pitched setting up a colony on Antarctica as a possible backup for Europe, I'd argue the same thing. We need a better reason. Humanity got bored with the moon in fewer than 3 missions. Mars isn't anything like it is being sold as, and while I'd love to be proven wrong on that, I don't expect I will be. It isn't the story they're selling. But it is a story of progress. We all use relics to feel we understand (and potentially even control) the world.
@HandOfThemis
@HandOfThemis 5 жыл бұрын
You keep using this Antarctica example, but you're fundamentally wrong. we have the technology to survive on mars, we just have an issue getting there. It has more than just a failsafe for us to lust for; resources, research, historical data, and most importantly it has water. The moon is neat, but ultimately useless. A mag-lev space elevator system would be much better, if it were currently viable.

Humans have never needed much of a reason for anything. "It's cool", "I don't like it here" or even just a "why not" are all valid reasons for many individuals that they're going to find themselves, for themselves. If people can do something, some inevitably will. All we have ever needed is the possibility, the economic feasibility. Coincidentally that's also what stopped the moon landings. "Boredom" is selling the entire Apollo program short. Economic feasibility is what will make or break Mars too and why Musk made it his number one goal. It may prove impossible in the end, but at least it's an actual light at the end of the tunnel and not just mere imagination, a lie of there of one. A backup for humanity on the Moon on the other hand might be such a lie as there's little chance of a Moon colony being self sufficient.

When you say "agnostic", are you using it as a term to try and deny you are atheist without being theist (an idea that by itself is false) or are you using it as a term to describe the debate with Socrates where it was indicated where one cannot truly know (until you get to Descartes). Atheism and Agnosticism are answering different questions, people who try to impose Agnoticism in place of Atheism don't often realize they aren't answering the same question. I, for example, am an Agnostic Atheist. The reason I am able to call myself such is because the two are not related. Atheism by itself is only opposed to Theism, you are one or the other. But this means you can be an Agnostic Theist, and yes, there are Agnostic Theists that exist.

Agnostic theists are way better and logical than dogmatic theists At least they realize that they need a dogma, a purpose unlike others who take every single word to be literally true
@bloodgain
@bloodgain 4 жыл бұрын
To be specific, (a)theism refers to the question of belief in the existence of one or more deities. (A)gnosticism refers to epistemology, knowledge and the ability to know. I find gnosticism on either side of the theistic question rather irrational, since neither side has any evidence. I lean even harder agnostic in that I doubt we'll even be able to know either way for sure. An important point here is that agnostic can apply to many more things than theism. For example, it's commonly used in programming terminology. It is often desirable for a piece of software to be _platform agnostic,_ meaning it will work the same no matter where it is run, and more importantly requires no information about where it is being run. It simply runs _without knowledge_ of its host system.

8:56 As much as I agree with everything you said in this video, including the „mars-plan“ of musk, this is not true. The moon is far from a good option for space colonization. It‘s a good first step, but definitly not comparable with an entire other planet. In terms of planets, venus is far more viable than any orher planet in this solar system. The existence of a magnetosphere alone is a big plus (something both moon and mars lack). And „We went to the moon and it gave us no purpose“... i wouldn‘t agree with that either. It incited dreams in quite a lot of people; people that are now working hard to carry humanity beyond this planet.
@KrKrp0n3
@KrKrp0n3 5 жыл бұрын
Venus is the best planet if you want a second earth, but it's also incredibly hard to colonize as you need to terraform the entire planet before you can even set foot on its surface. Or you could build flying cloud cities, but that kind of defeats the purpose of being on a planet in the first place a bit as you lose the direct vicinity to raw materials but gain the disadvantage of having to climb a gravity well if you want to leave. Although maybe robotic mining may be feasible, but those need to be some really sturdy and heat resistant robots. It's going to be expensive either way. The Moon also has various things going against it, Mars really is the only option if you want something you can start with *right now*. I'm sure Musk has lied about something, but this ain't it.
@Chribit
@Chribit 5 жыл бұрын
true. It's not like we need to choose one. In the end, we'll probably try colonising all three astronomical bodies and beyond (Europa and Enceladus anyone?). But yes, mars definitely is a good first step, as is the moon if we want to test some general things. but as you said, if we really want an earth 2.0 and we have the necessary resources, venus should be the way to go.
@shadymerchant1198
@shadymerchant1198 5 жыл бұрын
Chribit colonizing either Mars or venus won't help anyone in fact it would make those colonizers lives worse living in a underground bunker on mars or never setting foot on solid ground on venus neither option is good and neither benefits humanity But that's the point you dogmatically believe that it will and go after anyone who doesn't think the same way
