Today we are taking at look at the specs and flaws of the Chrysler 6.1L Hemi V8. This engine wasn't as mass produced as the other Hemis, with 83,839 being made from 2005-2010 before it was gone and replaced by the 6.4L Hemi. It was SRT8 specific, found in the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Challenger, & Magnum, and Jeep Grand Cherokee. It had great power and performance with 420-425 horsepower. The good news for SRT8 owners is that unlike the other Hemis, this engine doesn’t have such common and widespread problems, and I had to really dig deep to find issues with this motor. So first we will look at the specs of this 6.1 and then look at some of the bigger issues, including what they are, which vehicles they affect, and how to possibly prevent them.

As a 2008 Dodge Charger SRT8 Owner, this video was Great & the Information was Spot on. This Engine is truly awesome & is worth taking care of.... A true Hot Rod. I've had the 3.6, have the 6.4L and the 6.1L. The 6.1 is probably the quietest of the bunch, and power is in the higher rev range. Love the fact it doesn't have MDS, and its a very reliable engine. The 6.4L in my GC SRT has MDS (not my favourite) , which I think from '16 up has corrected the lifter problem, time will tell. Great video, love my 6.1L Challenger SRT!

I’ve had 3 of these 2 at over 150k, just maintain them like any other vehicle and they’re bullet proof. I track one of them and I run up to 300-315 degree oil temp with no issues just have to let it run until it gets down to 230 or 240 and shut it down and it’ll be fine after wards and change the oil when you should. The 6.1 is the Quietest Hemi I’ve ever heard none of mine have ever had the valve train noise like a 5.7, 6.4, or 6.2 which is nice.

Im at 180k miles on my 2008 SRT cherokee (daily driven since 2011). Maintenance is everything. Purchased it in 2011 with 42k miles and I ran it with a Vortech blower from 2012-2016 on 91 pump gas with zero issues just normal maintenance: oil changes, spark plugs, coils. Then from 2018 until now (2024) i been running Full Bolt ons on E85 still zero issues. But I’ve had friends in the past that have had total nightmares with these engines.

I have heard there is a plastic pulley that will fail. I have less than 16,000 miles on my 2009 Challenger SRT8. I change the oil once a year, have changed the diff and transmission oil just because of the age of the vehicle. Only use premium and will add Techron once a year. Recently changed the battery as it finally gave up the ghost. When stored I keep it in a garage under a car cover hooked up to a trickle charger. Plan to keep the car until it is officially a classic car.

In my opinion, my ranking for Dodge engines goes 6.2, 6.1, 5.7, and 6.4. I really wish that instead of axeing the 6.1, they made it it standard in the R/T line for sedans. The 6.4 should've been the staple engine for their trucks and jeeps. As for scat packs, they could have just done either a performance package 6.1 or a NA 6.2. That way the hellcats and up get the blower treatment and they still rake in the cash.

Awesome video! The “pilot bushing” for the ATF leak in the NAG 1 trans, known to Mercedes techs as the 722.6 is generally a very easy repair to make. So long as the bolt in the pilot bushing isn’t seized in the threaded insert pressed into the conductor plate on the valve body, this is a simple and easy fix. You will likely lose a small amount of fluid when replacing this so have a quart on hand or better yet, replace it when doing a service. Additionally the maximum allowable oil consumption spec in MB motors varies from a maximum of 1 liter every 1,000 kilometers, or one quart every 1,000 miles. I dunno about you but if my car was burning one liter of oil every 620 miles I’d be pretty pissed, but the spec is the spec. Chrysler isn’t the only company that uses absolutely insane specs to cover themselves.

Though I've read where people have changed the plugs at 60k miles "per the book" and they were .44 when installed, but .5 to .6 at the 60k mark. I'm currently at the 123k on the factory plugs. My 2006 300srt8 is at 110,000 miles and has had a Procharger with 8lb boost since it was new. I have only done spark plugs multiple times, oil changes at or before 3000 and a crank sensor at 80,000. Otherwise only accessory Drive components like power steering, alternator, water pump so far. It has been very powerful and very reliable. The transmission also! With that ProCharger on there I have beat on it pretty good to the point of breaking my ring and pinion and my driveshaft while running drag radials often. So basically only oil changes and spark plugs. I guess maybe I should do coils...

My 6.1 was great to me. Unfortunately was totaled, but make it to a little over 201K miles still running hard, had plenty of miles left to go, and it was running well even though I know at least one of the previous owners was rough on it. But overall great car, kept up with the new muscle cars with just a few small mods 👌 I recommend getting one, they build a lot better than 6.4s do, they handle boost and mods better. But to each their own, I wanted a scat at first but I started doing my research. They’re great cars but stock, they pretty much at maximum power for what they are, you want to get forged internals if you want to put in work on them, as Marspeed covered in the 6.4 Hemi Fatal Flaw

I purchased my 2006 Magnum SRT8 with 98K miles on it, knowing that it was gonna be not only my daily driver but also my forever car (not selling it). Around 185K miles, it developed a oil pan gasket leak and a rear main seal leak. Decided to do a rebuild on the entire engine for peace of mind and another 185K miles of use. During the tear down, the shop informed me that one of the lifters had started to go bad and was already wearing down one of the camshaft lobes. Since the rebuild, I'm now up to 224K miles. I do oil changes every 3K miles ever since I got the car. I always use Mobil1 Full Synthetic. The 6.1L calls for 0W-40 oil, not 5W-20 as stated in the video.

I may be having the lifter roller issue at 210 miles on my 06 srt8. Looking for an honest shop. Got burned with Tomlin knights in Oshawa. Their $590 assessment was a dropped valve seat. I have driven my 2007 Australian delivered WH Jeep as a daily for 7 years and ive had my foot to the floor everyday on multiple occasions at probably 85% + of the time. Its chewed oil like mad which has probably been a good thing topping it up with fresh oil, but it initially messed with my MAP sensor sucking oil into the intake which I changed and added an oil catch can. Its never missed a beat since. More than five years. I've had a number of car guys say they have never seen someone foot to the floor always like me in my daily lol. Everything is still going strong but I'm guessing the timing chain would be surely due for assessment now and the 426 stroker kit / turbo I've been saving / putting together for it as a full overhaul scenario and new level of fun. But if i think about it id say i change the oil around every 4500 kilometers, maybe even more than 5000 but im topping it up with oil every month and overall its quite a volume & cost and has only been cheaper in the last 2 1/2 years since i started using 5w40 oil which is much cheaper than the 0w40. Pure grins and smiles for me with this beast, so much so I bought a twin recently. Power to the 6.1! Its a bit over 250,000 kilometers on the clock now

I worked in the outboard motor segment of the marine industry for some time and saw LOTS of 'needle-roller' failures in the bottom end of Mercury brand motors from the three cylinder motors to the six cylinder models. The hardened surface of the 'needles' would 'peel' or 'shred' chewing into the surface of both the con rod and the crank pin. They earned the nick-names of "Black Plague" or "Black Death". When I first saw the 'needle' lifter failure videos it was all too familiar. When I buy my SRT8 (next couple of months) I will be replacing the stock lifters with the "ISKY CAMS" recently developed helical oil grooved solid- bushed- roller' lifters straight away.

another point: I replaced my roller cam followers, the lifters, at almost 200,000. miles. no damage that I could detect, BUT I cool my oil, and I use mobile one 15w50. the new cam followers (I think) replace the needle bearings with bigger roller bearings. there is also a new oiling hole on the lifters. I recall seeing my oil temp reach 300 degrees before I started cooling the oil. that temp is pretty high if you want to maintain adequate roller bearing lubrication. Word to the wise, keep these hemis cool!

Happened to my 06 300 srt didn’t have knocks or pings of any sort till the car out of nowhere would just shut off and wouldn’t want to start, took it to my local performance shop and they diagnosed my car with lifter failure on cylinder #5 and well oh behold the cars cam was eaten by the seized lifter, mind you my car only had 111k miles and for it to be failing at that Mileage is crazy because I’ve seen people have upwards to 180k miles with no issues with the stock lifters, but anyways I solved the problem by upgrading to the hellcat lifters and I put a comps cam kit in it aswell, I also added a melling performance oil pump for more oil pressure so I wouldn’t have issues later on, but so far car is running like a champ just like the day it came out of factory

Great video and info for the srt8 6.1. I have a 2008 dodge charger srt8 superbee. At 161000 I had a misfire on cylinder 8. Replaced fuel injectors and coils and plugs. Still got misfire so finally took it in to the shop and had them open it up. Found it was a worn cam shaft. Ended up rebuilding the top half of the motor. Back on the street good as new.

07 charger srt8 @ 183,334mi owner here, nothing major wrong besides the typical small leaks and replacing a sensor or two, I check the oil about every 3 days and tend to beat on it because of the traffic I have to deal with on a daily basis. I ALWAYS turn the key to run but not turn it over for about 10 seconds, then turn it on, let it sit for AT LEAST 1 minute just out of habit and having to connect to android auto. I don’t get on it until I see the oil, engine, and oil temperature is at least 130+. I got the car @ 160k-170k can’t remember EXACTLY. So far I have replaced the radiator as the fan broke and blew a hole in it, the turn signal replaced twice as the dealer broke the spring but “its old” so i had to pay out of pocket, 4 brand new tires as almost all of them had wires showing which was illegal for them to sell but I wanted to buy it no matter what as its been a dream car since i was about 13. I also replaced the battery, air filter twice, cabin air filter*, spark plugs, coil packs, brake pads in the back replaced, steering alignment sensor, both front struts as the right was blown out completely when they sold it to me, replaced one fuel injector as it was bad and caused a misfire, and the oil/filter every 3k miles as i want it to last. I looked at the carfax AFTER I bought it but the previous owners had replaced the alternator, starter x2, and upper control arms. TL;DR Other than regular maintenance and replacing old parts that broke its run perfect for me, hoping to get it rebuilt and upgraded when it hits 200k just to be safe.

The 6.1 is an awesome engine for a NA ....not so much for boosting unless you use better pistons with thicker top ring land. Stock piston does not have enough meat from top of piston to top of ring. Thus the reason they frown on supercharging and turbo. I believe the Max psi from SC i believe is 5-7 psi max.and also don't allow it to idle long periods of time "so i have heard" and the intake is in great demand because it can be bolted to the 5.7 and the 5.7 can take moderate boost. But oil change schedule should be kept tight or before the mileage time and agood filter(SRT) preferably or the black Mopar and also keep a good stock of the PCV on hand not cheap but a lot less than a complete rebuild or cam shaft and lifters. Also do not deveate from the 0w-40 mobile, Pennzoil, Royal purple synthetic and i also like to throw in a bottle of liquid moly every other oil change or Lucas oil stabilizer and a bottle of Lucas fuel injector/system cleaner... it's probably over kill but i like to take care of my stuff and every 16k i send out and oil sample to get engine health update and each report has been outstanding the only time it came back janky was after the break in...oh and get your self a oil filter cutter and inspect the filter pleats for debris. When you play with high horse power race engine's you tend to want to know the health of the $70k+ bullet but same can apply to the $10-14k stt engines....but like I said I am ADD when it comes to my power plants. I love my mopars!👍👌✌️

I own a 09 Jeep SRT8 with the 6.1L and I haven't experienced any of the flaws yet (10+ years of ownership, with 100k+ miles). I change my oil very often and daily-ed it for 5 years before picking up another daily driver that consumes much less fuel. Mine is modified (stock motor) with aftermarket long tube headers, P&P intake, CIA, a bunch of suspension upgrades, and most importantly sticky tires. Mine runs 12.2 in the 1/4th mile and does 0-62MPH (metric conversion) in 3.8sec during the winter (-30f air temp near sea level, aka great DA). I plan to get new aftermarket heads and custom cam and probably change the internals in preparation for FI, although I love it NA for now.

Actually caught mechanics slipping. Had to check over and cylinder 7 was fouled and plug was actually burnt. Fixed code and then on to next issues. After new cats and new sensors NTK o2 I still get a p2098 coming back but I did find exaust leak and welded it and going to do compression myself to see what each cylinder has soon since it seems to be lugging so improper fuel air ratios. Put some injector cleaner and high octane actually made it respond more as it should. Air filter is super dirty so next fix and vacuumed hoses loose so clamping those. I’ll report back later but fairly easy to work on yourself with obd2 and basic knowledge shared online etc

Their report was head in perfect condition and valves were looped and closing and opening just perfect. I put the head back on and did all the secondary replacements however the mysterious misfire was still there. Thanks to this video now I'm confident it's a lifter and roller issue.
