The original Sinclair ZX Spectrum was an amazing home computer for the time and in this full unboxing, review and play test video I give you my full honest, no holds barred review of this classic system, The Spectrum from Retro Games Ltd.
We all have fond memories from the classic UK 8 bit home computer the humble Sinclair ZX Spectrum from the 1980s that dominated the UK computer market. We grew up playing many classic games on this classic home computer and many of todays video game developers cut their programming teeth on the classic Sinclair ZX Spectrum. @OG are you able to test if you can run POKES on the machine?

Another reviewer demonstrated that the POKE command works. It was the reviewer's method of fixing a bug from back in the day, that prevented a certain game from running on Speccy's with over 48K memory. The bug's been carried forward to The Spectrum, and the same POKE command did the trick - it got the game running

Got mine yesterday. Not yet powered it up, but did open the box and take a look. The build quality is *absolutely amazing* and feels like the real deal I'd say, and sparked the most nostalgic feeling I've had in a very very long time.

The loading screen stripes fill me with such great nostalgia...... Playing matchday, leaderboard, ant attack and death chase with my brothers....... Great memories and great games, simplistic, but soooo good. Plus the added classic touch of spectrums logo is the same as the Dark Side Of The Moon colours lol.

Hi! Having received my 48k as a Christmas present in 1983 and being in the retro scene for a decade or so now, I'm with you. "The Spectrum" could become the best piece of kit the retro scene has produced so far. Having been part of the ZX Spectrum Next project starting at 2017 this is possibly a competitor. While being hugely better from the technical point of view, it surely will loose when looking at how easy "The Spectrum" handles and how much nostalgia you will get. Having a big bunch of restored originals and hardware, I'm absolutely sure that "The Spectrum" could be my all day driver when presenting stuff at retro events. (At the moment my favorite is a ZX-Uno XL in a 48k case...) Keep the fingers crossed that mine will arrive pretty soon and THNX for your video... ;-)

Mine arrived and just unboxing now while watching this. Perfect evening 🥰. That’s a great pack you have there. Very Lucky. Standard only has the Crash Mag and the basic Instructions which is only 3 pages. Would love to look through that huge Manual, so many memories.

At least you received the full-colour Crash magazine ... apparently that's only included for units sold by UK distributors. So European purchasers shall miss out. As for the printed manual in the press kit - whilst that would've been nice, there's a PDF downloadable version on the Retro Games website

Great unboxing review. My “The Gamepad” was delivered today. The Spectrum won't arrive until Monday. I can hardly wait. Back then, 40 years ago, I loved playing “Cookie”, “Atic Atac”, “Ant Attack”, “Pssst” and one of those labyrinth games on the ZX Spectrum where you had to rescue a prisoner, but I can't remember the name of it now.

What an exciting moment! "The Spectrum" arriving must have been a trip down memory lane, especially if it helped you rediscover Maziacs. That game, with its maze exploration and puzzle-solving elements, really stands out as a classic from 1983. DK'Tronics Ltd did a great job creating an atmospheric experience on the humble ZX Spectrum. Have you had the chance to dive back into Maziacs yet? I bet playing it again brings back all the nostalgia, from the tense search for treasures to dodging those challenging enemies!

I got one for Christmas, cause I used to program in Sinclair BASIC when I was a kid (now I'm 53). I think that the most important features regard the emulation of Sinclair BASIC and the possibility to add games using the USB ports.

Great vid , loved it . I’ve got a feeling I’ll be getting one for Xmas . As a 55 year old and started my programming career on a 48k as a kid I can’t wait to get my hands on it . USB drive will be on order with preloaded games and got a joystick on the way so I don’t wear away with keyboard . Won’t be as good as my old Kempton 2 .

Hey Ogduffy I have watched a couple of your videos and have really enjoyed them. This my favourite so far. Your enthusiasm for the spectrum past and present is great fun. I got the Spectrum on launch day from Argos and not Amazon and read some tails of people not getting their spectrums from Amazon on launch day so I been lucky there. Enjoyed your video and would include Jetpac, Alien 8 and Tranz am and all rhe early Ultimate games. They were really good and Atic Atac always been my favourite. That save state may take Underwurlde to be my new fave thru time haha you never know. Always liked that game but frustrating at times but always Ultimate genius. Jet set willy is another which I didn't have back in the day but its up there in many peoples lists. Manic Miner is on this and Starquake which I love and save stats for my zx spectrum 128k + helped me finally finish again this time as an Adult. So many great games old and new to play on here. It's very exciting and I really happy for everyone that Spectrum is finally here!! Oh yes and many thanks for your videos. You are great fun and let's keep on with the classic Spectrum 😊

I am getting mine for Xmas some 42 years after getting one under the Xmas tree last time. The Press Pack edition looks the dogs, question is though are you missing a part. Other reviews I have seen have a USB stick in the shape of the ZX microdrive, I didn't see that on your video?

I've seen a press kit in a different review, where that likewise wasn't included. No big deal, it's not part of the retail pack either. And from the vlogger's perspective - don't look a gift-horse in the mouth

@@txtworld It might well have been an additional extra to actually buy. I have since found them for sale albeit currently out of stock until next week. Its just for me it would finish off the overall asthetics of the console with one plugged in. I have in the meantime made my own using a microdrive cartridge. + am working on using the housing from an old UK700 power brick for a more retro power supply.

That's amazing, m8. I had the ZX Spectrum+ first computer I ever owned. Remember you had to to move the cassette player around sometimes to stop the games crashing when they were loading up, or was that just me? My mate had the Spectrum with the built in cassette player. I envied him at the time. Remember Sam Fox's strip poker?, hahaha. Good game.

I got one for the BASIC programming. It's hard to program an emulator on a PC without that crazy Speccy multi-code keyboard. My The Spectrum was supposed to be delivered by Amazon today but no show (I got the "Your item has been dispatched" email yesterday but no "Your item is out for delivery" email) so I'm hoping for tomorrow now. The lack of updates from Amazon is rather disappointing. I pre-ordered it in August. It looks good though. I wish I was getting the version you have! But right now I'd be happy to get the bog-standard version I paid for.

There’s a good chance your standard USB controller won’t work without messing around with Linux files. You’re best off buying one of their controllers which is exactly what they want you to do as there’s absolutely NO REASON why any USB controller shouldn’t work on this

One hundred thumps up for the beer scene!!! I am east-german and I love it!!! I got "The Spectrum" today and checked it a little bit! I didn't owned one back in the days, but a classmate did... He offered a computer course, but there where to many course participants! I don't know exactly any more: Maybe my first experience with a computer was with a mainframe and an text-adventure game: We visited as a class The Academy of Science of the German Democratic Republic, because one of the fathers of my classmates was a physicist there...

No idea why they use scan lines in the UK We didn't have them on our crts On emulators I use there's a smooth effect and that gives it a similar UK crt effect

I'm struggling to get it to boot as a 128k spectrum in classic mode. Whatever model I choose in the machine options it boots in 48k spectrum mode. I'd like to be able to access 128k basic as there are extra commands to program the 3 voice sound chip.

@OGDuffy tried allsorts including saving 128k basic programs using an emulator on a computer, and loading it into the Retrogames Spectrum. It only opens on 48k basic. I'll try the firmware update, and failing that try using a 128k rom. It's odd though, and there's nothing on their website about it.

@OGDuffy Ha ha managed to get it working. I had to use the +2A roms and get the machine to see those roms (the manual tells you where to put the roms on your USB drive). Took me a while to find the roms online . There's 4 files. You need need to rename them, and also change the extension from .bin to .rom. didn't think it would work, but it did, and I got access to 128k basic. Now I'm going to spend some time writing chiptune music accompanied by some basic speccy graphics. So stoked!!!

Yeah I've got all my roms loading at original tape loading speed, because I'm twisted! I'm making a list and checking it twice, like Santa. I can see where all the enthusiasm is and even myself considered getting one for ease of use for quite some time. But, after looking at it for a while, it is basically just a rubber keyboard with a custom front end on an emulator. That pretty much sums it up. If you took that front end and added it to fuse or most other emulators, then that is what it is minus the rubber keys. It's good for a single modern unit to just plug n' play, but not exactly the kind of innovation I was thinking it might be. Theres been a lot of posts on social media with unboxing, gameplay videos and so on - but, it is just unboxing an emulator with a custom front end and playing the same speccy games again. It is only my opinion mind but it seems complete overhype for a product that isn't really anything innovative.

I was thinking the same myself. Plug n' Play - Yes. Innovation or anything new - No. The Spectrum Next, now that was innovation and glad i backed it. Years ago there was a front-end for Fuse using Gamebase (on PC) which although was different to the carousel, had literally everything in it. Just a cash in on peoples nostalgia really as it doesn't provide anything new, the same as all RGL products. Judging from various posts I've seen, quite a few people hitting issues and 1st firmware release recalled because "it's buggy" . 🙄.

I bought the competition pro joystick to go with mine, i dont rate it very much, seems stiff and awkward and not responive enough. Tbf though a lot of joysticks were a bit rubbish back in the day. I wanted a quick shot turbo, but looks like they haven't been re issued

Has anyone tried to pair it with a wireless keyboard? I have a Logitech k400 for the Amiga 500 Mini and I would really like to know if I can use it with The Spectrum. That or any other wireless keyboard really, because I have a couch/sofa setup and I don't want to use The Spectrum's keyboard.

I'll probably buy one to try to experience the pain mostly British people experienced, while the rest of us were playing smooth-scrolling, great-sounding, no colour-clashing, awesome games on our c64s. It will be fun to finally try some of the other versions from the multiformat reviews in C+VG. Yes, I have been able to run emulators for decades, but this seems like a nice package that might finally entice me to do so.

@@OneSwitch I will always prefer "perfomance mode (featuring smooth scrolling and washed-out colours)" over "fidelity mode (featuring screen tearing, jarring colours and colour clash)", but yeah :-) Aaaand I probably should have jumped - no stock to be found anywhere. Oh well, eventually etc. Instead there is plenty of stock of the discounted Atari400 mini, that probably next to noone wants, which I bought a few months ago and never opened.

@@Evilkingus Thanks for the nudge. Managed to get one from Argos (just about). Graphics wise, the Spectrum could manage 3D with more speed I recall and was more vivid, but we bought the C64 as it was closer to the arcade. I found the borders on both machines slightly offensive at the time and wish they weren't there. I suppose my early experience of the machines still colours my view, seeting Atic Atack on the Spectrum next to Tales of the Arabian Nights on the C64. Not entirely fair I realise. Hope you managed to get hold of one anyway.

Seems to have limited support currently. What I've found currently works - The C64 Stick Standard PS4 Controller What doesn't Currently work so far - Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Razer Wolverine - Both PS4/XBOX mode (Could be loaded profile issues so maybe a base Xbox will work). 8Bit do Lite 2.

In another review they used an 8BitDo controller, and it worked fine. With The C64 Maxi, my Mayflash Universal Arcade Stick F500 V2 works great .... so it's odds-on it'll likewise work with The Spectrum

Using the game pad that come with the Amiga a500 mini works fine but for USB games you need to map the controller…
