I bought a MGM rimfire spinner. It is the same target, just scaled down. It is not too expensive, is much easier to move around, and is really pretty fun. Of course with .22 there is no recoil to manage, but with half size plates (4" and 5") it is at least as challenging as the full size version. Anyway, a few practice sessions with the rimfire version, and I was able to spin the spinner the next time it showed up in the match.

Gun Sense (drmaudio) That's actually a pretty good idea for some inexpensive training. Teaches the same concept.

One of the comments made during that wonderful Ken Burns series on baseball is that the game is more about losing than it is about winning. There are some parallels here. Timing and pacing is critical in so many games. Watching the clean timing displayed by the guy with plus ten years of practise just made me shake my head. Deliberately adding stress of some form makes even mastered skills more difficult. An excellent presentation guys. Well done.

This video reminds me of the first time I encountered a Texas Star, I think it was my second match ever. Looked really intimidating but relaxing and working on getting clean hits on shot at a time worked. Felt great after clearing that stage.
@prometheussmithksu7 жыл бұрын
Beating the star is always a good feeling for first-timers. My first encounter was at a bitch of a match that had the top half blocked by a barricade so that your first shot always set it spinning as fast as possible.
@sethrich59987 жыл бұрын
Preston Smith Oh man, I had one of those. They put a star at like 35 yards and it was obscured with walls so you had to wait for it to swing into a window and move positions to get all the hits. Lots of people failed that day. I think I left one plate.

I remember watching Russell's own videos of the Hard As Hell 2-gun, and comparing with yours. He was able to dispatch those spinners so easily. It seems to me the most significant difference between him and either you or Ian was that he relied heavily on double taps.

When I first started to think about these after seeing them on video, something was telling me hitting the target at 90 degrees was best for some sort of kinetic vs. potential energy reason. I realized this didn't actually have any effect, but it's refreshing to realize that there is a reason it's still true: at this vertical position, the bullet transfers the maximum amount of its momentum to the spinner arms. Leverage also has nothing to do with it, but the bullets' momentum is all horizontal, so transferring it when the spinner's motion is _also_ all horizontal, not partly vertical, is ideal. Unless the reason is really just that a 90-degree hit is the most solid, and everything I just said is spurious. :)

I'm not sure if I agree with Karl saying you need to hold the gun "differently", that is, with a death grip, when shooting a red dot equipped pistol. Shouldn't a pistol always be gripped hard if you want to control it well? I'm aware the dot can jump around from shot-to-shot, but don't the same exact rules of recoil control + follow through apply to both a red dot gun and iron sight gun? I'm a novice when it comes to red dot pistol shooting, but this is the impression I get from what I've shot. Am I wrong, or missing something?

Hi Karl, Having never shot a spinner, it seems to be pretty intuitive how it works. But on the the clock I can see where people panic and rush shots. Not to mention trying to to do it on the clock with small mags as we have seen Ian and you do several times, with the reload just about putting you back to square one. A technical question. is there a formula for spinners as far as weight distribution? What is the ratio of large and small plate? Thanks for all you do.

I have found it is more often as Karl said in the video, mindset. At a local steel challenge match I see it all the time. We don’t use a spinner, but have one stage in particular that kills people. An array of a dozen or so poppers from 2”- 4” with a run across the bay to a hostage/bad guy headshot. The first thing I hear at that bay is oh crap, I say oh sweet! Some of the shooters are better than me, yet I almost always destroy them on that stage. It is mostly mindset coming into the stage.
@drmaudio7 жыл бұрын
I suspect it has a lot to do with the $400 price tag for this target. Also, many don't have access to a range or place where they can set up and use a target like this. Having said that, I do have access to such a range, so I bought the much cheaper rimfire version for exactly that reason (to address my failure points), and it has helped a great deal.
