Those were beautiful times back then. Much better then they are in today's troubled world now. The music then had meaning, along with beautiful memories you can relate too in your past. Today, the world is gray, not rosey like it use to be in so many ways. Going back in time, with the beautiful songs left in our hearts and minds, will never cease with me.

Born and raised in Chicago's housing projects in the 70's, I can relate on every level of this song. As hard as those times were, somehow I still miss them. Must've been the music.

“I was just a boy punished for a crime that was not mine …”. I could listen to Philippe sing that line all day long, his face reflecting the pain & lack of understanding from the world around him. It’s such a beautiful song that I listen to almost every day.

The ultra smooth baritone Henry Fambrough - the last living member of classic 70s lineup of The Spinners --has retired from active performing. Just a few weeks shy of his 85th birthday, Fambrough has stepped aside from active performing, and is taking a well-deserved rest after decades of constant touring. The Spinners, lead singers Philippe Wynne (who replaced G.C. Cameron who was still with a solo contract with Motown) and Bobby Smith garnered the most attention. But the handlebar moustached Henry Fambrough seemed to always be the one called up to deliver the smoothest of the soul ballads that the group released, including such fan favorites as “I Don’t Want To Lose You” (his personal favorite), “Just As Long As We Have Love,” and “Ghetto Child.” Wynne left for an unsuccessful solo career (before sadly dying in 1984), and the group had a second run of fame with dance producer Michael Zager and lead singer John Edwards, landing in the top 10 with covers of “Working My Way Back To You” and “Cupid.”

YOU KNOW SOMETHING AND I'LL BE FLAT OUT HONEST !! I DIDN'T PICK UP ON THE LYRICS UNTIL I STARTED HAVING FLASHBACKS OF MY CHILDHOOD AND MY TEENS AND LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING. EVERY BIT OF THIS SONG REMINDS ME OF MYSELF GROWING UP. I CAN RELATE BIG TIME !!

One of my favorite Spinners cuts too...and Henry Fambrough should be called the 3rd lead singer. He is fantastic on this song and "I Don't Want to Lose You" among others...So touching and poignant!!

Did not understand the lyrics in the seventies in Brooklyn so I put my own lyrics to the music. I wonder how many other songs that I put my own words to during that time.

No.Bruce Hawes and to other guys wrote this 90% of their songs .It was Hawes,Simmons and another guy.If you start read more comments you'd know. Bruce post comments on alot of songs here Thom Bell & Linda Creed wrote mostly for the Stylistics .Watch unsung the Spinners. He told Hawes,Simmons and I believe the other was Jefferson .Thom Bell told them to think Spinners.Don't worry about the Stylistics.Think Spinners and they did. They were Hawes,Simmons &Jefferson. And they did.

If a person who can make any useful of his brain ,would take this song deeper than just being sung on stage or studio would relate this to an experience that people have personally been thru ,but people are so narrow minded ,that they don't relate the fact that music back then was a part of truthful experience, were as music today is sung from what they are inmagining as well lying about something they would like to be or just straight out ignorance,

I love the song it is very good but, poverty is colorless and so is the ghetto and although this was very long ago it is all too modern of a theme that black people are used as the mascots for the ghetto it is absolutely sickening.
