The elliptical wing concept wasn't new. It's benefits were first published 1907 by Fredrick Lanchester. Mitchell had used elliprical wings since 1924. The Spitfire elliptical wing was revolutionary though for its strong yet thin structure. I'd like to see someone build the prototype of his 1937 Type 312 with ventral radiator and carb intake under the spinner. That would have been the ultimate Spitfire.
