The school uniform is from Brentwood High. I was a fellow student and our art teacher was Steve Cummings' girlfriend - I think she may be in this clip. We were lucky enough to have the Sports play at a school assembly prob 1977! My respect for our art teacher went up about a million decibels!

Not bad at all. How about yourself? I've been developing my 'nzoz' channels on my free time and just managed to finish the bulk of the 1960's nzoz channels. To see my work, just type nzoz music in the search. Sadly, I missed that recent Sports reunion gig.. you guys didn't seem to make it to Sydney!

As patriotic as I am I don't care that they're Australian, music is meant to be enjoyed by everyone anywhere in the world regardless of where they're from and listening to The Sports, you'd have to be tone deaf not to enjoy their music. Great band.

I saw these guys open for Rachel Sweet roughly 40 years ago. I was in love with Rachel Sweet and had plans to marry her. The Sports were obviously seasoned musicians and were pushing 30. Having them open for a 16 year old singer was a tad unfair. She was great, but her hard work on stage looked like second nature to the Aussie band that supported her.

They fell into a funny period. They were pub rockers, ageing hippies and Beefheart fans that had to give up their early 70's rock leanings for a more 'New Wave' approach. My uncle witnessed a young punk spit at Ed Bates (their previous bearded guitarist), only to have him jump off the stage and throttle the offending punk. He was replaced by a more hip Martin Armiger (blonde guitarist in clip). Even with him and their toying with Elvis Costello, The Cars, Graham Parker, etc; they only got to go so far. Shame... they could have done better if it wasn't for that cultural cringe and Australian inferiority complex that plagued Aussie bands like this at the time. INXS took a fair bit from these guys in their early days, and Nick Cave's old band The Boys Next Door used to open for them.
