The reason the case has that extra piece is because it lines up with the belt guard or chain depending on the model year it came from , if you look at a stock sportster you can see if they made it how you customised it then the belt would have a 3 inch gap between the motor and belt (Chain) guard , there for allowing space for a passenger's pant leg to get sucked into , there now you know why lol .....

That looks great ... I did something similar to my cam chest cover. I just cut off all the excess metal around the bolt holes. Filed and sanded everything smooth and then powder coated it .. looked good
