I was there in July, it was so hot, but it was amazing, I always wondered were the spot was Lincoln gave his speech. Thought it was in the national cemetery and not evergreen Cemetery. But this is great information. Thanks guys. From the spot you guys are saying he gave his speech, you can see the flag where Jenny Wade is laid to rest now. Thank you again guys.

I was there last Sunday, hiking with the Scout troop. I happen to be a 'tree guy' and, as with many cemeteries, there are some really cool trees in that area, including a giant Tulip Poplar with its own lightning rod.

It's awesome to think of this event and the tremendous strain Lincoln was under on that occasion. His son had recently died, another son was very ill and his wife wanted him to stay home. Lincoln himself was ill and had to be bedridden after he got back. Not to mention the weight of the war on his shoulders.

I sometimes stay at the Comfort Suites Hotel next to Evergreen Cemetery and always request a room on the third floor facing the cemetery. Kind of eerie. Excellent video.

Based on the famous photo, the dedicatory speaker's platform is well inside the Evergreen Cemetery most probably where a mausoleum now stands and not by the fence. The fence separating the two cemeteries runs along between the flagpole and the Evergreen Cemetery gatehouse. Also, the podium is at the right side of the cemetery gatehouse basing from the camera's perspective. When Lincoln delivered the speech he was facing the flagpole which is now the monument. Note the cemetery gatehouse is perfectly aligned straight towards the camera which is looking oriented towards northeast. Well, you wonder wny Lincoln is facing towards where the camera is standing. Lincoln is not delivering a speech nor sitting down at this point but actually getting off the podium at the side that is also why he is looking downwards when the photo was taken. That explains why the peak of of Culp's Hill is also visible from this angle at the right side.

What was General Lee's reaction when he read about Lincoln's speech? Did Lee realize he made a gigantic mistake at Gettysburg and Lincoln was taking full advantage of the Union victory? I wonder if Lee ever regretted the side he chose when he saw the brilliance of Lincoln on display. Jefferson Davis was totally outmatched by President Lincoln.

Lee made the mistake of fighting this absurd honorable war, against an industrial power house, having endless supply. thqt was a mistake his revolutionary predicesors never made in the south against the british. they used a guirilla war using the terrain of the south, in the revolutionary war.

General Robert E. Lee was one of the best American military leader's of all time. I doubt he would have cared the least bit about Abraham Lincoln's speech. Not to disrespect the magnificent spoken words of Mr. Lincoln, but General Lee had a war to win. And he led his soldier's and fought like no tomorrow . . . really no mistake at all. Both sides just cannot always win. Deal with it.

Been there several times and had no idea where the platform was located. I had spent several hours following the book "then and now" and found the graves that are shown in the book and where the photographer would of been standing. Just another reason to fly back again from California.

It appears possible to find the exact spot of the Gettysburg Address based on photographic evidence and background identifiers. There has to be a few more photographs of the event and sketches to narrow it down.

To me it makes perfect sense that there are no markers for the speakers platform in Evergreen Cemetery. The gravestones at that location are sacred to the memories of the people who are buried there -- it would be a shame to have crowds of sightseers walking all over those graves.

For those interested in Abraham Lincoln, there is another video where an 11th generation cousin of Lincoln speaks. He absolutely has a resembelance to Lincoln....but I think, more importantly, it is when he speaks, that you get some idea of how people described Lincolns voice as odd, or high pitched. I don't think it is odd or hich pitched....it is more of a whispy almost falsetto character to it. You have to watch this other video to see what I mean.

The background information presented here makes for a fascinating history lesson, and Posterity should be grateful to the Battlefield Trust. Will comment to say that even if the exact location of the Platform could be ascertained, it appears that a permanent Marker could result in gravesite desecration. Re-locating the Interred is always a difficult call; to so so at Gettysburg adds degrees of magnitude. May be best to keep that spot speculative and un-advertised.

In video 835 you have what appears to be an old photo when Lincoln was President. BUT in that photo their is what looks like a "Modern Boy looks appx. 12 yrs. old" He is wearing really fat large shoes/boots that are to big for him. That part of the video seems "off" as it looks like a boy from another future century.NOT the 1880's

Being that in the earliest days of the Civil War, many of the battles, had been fought in Virginia and the SHENANDOAH Valley. Destroying many peoples farm, with burning and looting, by the Union Army, Causing extreme food shortages. Also, the out door temperature had been in the high 90 degrees and there had been NO RAIN in weeks. Robert E. Lee, being a Virginia, knew that many of the Virginia Farm crops would begin to harvest, in late June and early July: Therefore, Robert E. Lee lead the Army of Northern Virginia, out of the SHENANDOAH Valley, into Maryland. With the intention, of allowing the Virginians time, to at least, harvest as much of a food crop, for the people, as they could, a way from the WAR. And the Virginians were looking for food and supplies. Thomas Jackson had just past away, on May 10th. Lee losing his right hand man.... specialist in Artillery. ( "Get there FIRST" and take the HIGH GROUND!") While Lee, crossing the Patomic River and battling, the extreme heat ....Robert E. Lee suffered a heart attack ... going into Pennsylvania. Lee also had sent his, trusty Reconisance Man , and cousin, Jeb Stuart, along with Lees' sons, a head, to research the situation. NOT knowing what they would find, in Pennsylvania. The Grey Ghost, patiently waited South of the Patomic River. To be sure Robert E Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia could get back South of the River. By 1863, ALL of America was having FOOD SHORTAGES, due to the War: Because the majority of the soldiers, on either side, were Americans' prime USA FARMERS and growers of the FOOD..EVEN THE UNION ARMY WAS STARVING FOR FOOD, BY 1863. And Abraham Lincoln ordered the Union Army to rob any farm, they wanted too. NORTH OR SOUTH. Food Riots broke out in NY city, NY. "MR LINCOLNS' MILITARY RULE!" "SUSPENDING THE CONSTITUTION!" EVERY THING WAS AT THE UNION ARMYS MERCY! And the UNION ARMY HAD SOLDIERS DESERTING, BECAUSE THEIR ENLISTMENTS, HAD BEEN UP FOR MONTHS AND THEY HAD NOT BEEN "PAID!" FOR THEIR SERVICE...IN MONTHS. So, they refused to fight. To respond to Abraham Lincolns' dilemma: Abraham Lincoln and the Northern States Republican Representatives, came up with the idea, to hurt the economic system, even further, in the South, were to FREE THE SOUTHERN PLANTERS' SLAVES... In hope they could, declare the SLAVES CITIZEN and they would leave the plantation and the Government, could Conscrpt them into the Union Army. At this same time, out of Desperation for warm bodies, the Northern Government, made a CONSCRPITION ACT... Also because, the Union Soldiers, whose enlistments, that were up, and because they were not getting paid: Went HOME and WOULD NOT RETURN. After they were home: They PROTESTED AGAINST ABRAHAM LINCOLNS' 90 DAY WAR.. AND THE "ONE BIG BATTLE," theory. .HAD TURNED INTO THREE PLUS YEARS OF WAR against their own families. When Many of the soldiers, on both sides returned home, Found themselves with PTSD... committed suicide .. Especially those soldiers who had fought at Sharpsburg/ ANTIETAM. ENTIRE AMERICA weeped! With, Mr. Lincolns' "Conscription Act" the UNION TROOPS, were sent to the warfs in New YORK CITY, New York, to meet the incoming IMMIGRANT SHIPS: Where ever male immigrant was conscripted, into the UNION ARMY And taken to the Wars' front lines. And the IMMIGRANTS were used as cannon fodder, ( for they were never trained) AND TO THIS DAY: NO ONE KNOWS' THEIR NAME! At this time 1863: Illinois, Indiana and Ohio had found their male citizen had become the "Whipping Boys', for Mr. Lincoln's War" because : iF YOU COULD PAY ABE LINCOLN $300, YOU DID NOT HAVE TO SERVE, IN HIS UNION ARMY. And the midwest dirt farmers, could NOT PAY the $300... Whereas, the industrial, East Coast citizens could. Therefore, the majority, of the UNION SOLDIERS came from those three mid West states. And Saw the Worst of the fighting. Indiana, Illinois and Ohio state Representatives wrote up a bill In 1863, "To SUCCEED FROM THE UNION" and UNITE TOGETHER! AND FORM "THE NORTH WEST CONFEDERACY." These three States had already removed their States treasuries, before the war started, and took it to MONTREAL, CANADA.FOR THOSE STATES TAXPAYERS MONEY WAS NOT GOING TO FUND, MR. LINCOLNs' WAR AGAINST THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. THEY HAD NO SLAVES! IT WAS AGAINST THE STATES' LAW! While out on the Prairie... Brigham Young .... loaded up his Southern Families Wealth and took it to Utah, out of the Reach of Abe Lincoln and the Union Army . Truth Hurts?
