Socotra is an island in the Indian Ocean between the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa, about 240 km off the coast of Somalia. It’s size is only 132x49 km, and the population is about 50 thousand people. Socotra is one of the world's most isolated islands of continental origin, which separated from Africa 6 million years ago and retained up to 40% of endemic animal and plant species. One of the most famous plants in Socotra is Dracaena cinnabari, or dragon blood tree. At the point of incision, it secretes a thick red juice, similar to blood, which the locals call dragon's blood. This juice is stored as a powder and used since ancient times in cosmetics, folk medicine, and as a natural dye to replace mercury-containing cinnabar. It is known that the juice of the dragon tree from Socotra was added to the varnish by Italian violin makers. Another famous plant of the island is Adenium obesum, or bottle tree, which is also called the desert rose and which blooms from late February to late April. In 2008, Socotra was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
