The Spurs have the #1 ranked defense, and under Gregg Popovich it is very well coached. I studied the defense from a coaching vantage point, for example looking closely at the matchups used, and how the Spurs defended post ups.

I love how at 5:10 kawhi doesn't leave his feet to contest the three, but stays low and defends the drive pretty well

I think people underrate Kyle Anderson. He may not have any offensive game, but there's a reason he gets those minutes, he's very good defensively.

Impressive for a team with David Lee and Pau Gasol to have such a good defense.
@theOnyFUFU

It's because they had 3 of the best perimeter defenders in the game: Kawhi, Green & Simmons. As long as Lee and Gasol know their rotations on D, those 3 guys can make up for their lack of D.

Thanks for sharing this... From 7:10 - 7:58 these are late switches. Not really a strategy rather a reaction to an emergency situation. In these examples the ball carrier's defender gets crunched on the screen and thus they must "late switch"... They teach this as part of all conservative coverage's.
@coachdaniel8163
@coachdaniel8163 7 жыл бұрын
You just explained the strategy lol. Just because they don't use it in every P&R doesn't mean it isn't a strategy.
@pushingblocks
@pushingblocks 7 жыл бұрын
But they're not trying to "late switch" it's only because the ball carrier's defender gets f'd up on the screen... If they wanted to switch it they would just switch to underneath the big(screener).
@pushingblocks
@pushingblocks 7 жыл бұрын
They're in conservative coverage, (drops/soft or weak), and "late switch" is the bail out when the players F it up.
@coachdaniel8163
@coachdaniel8163 7 жыл бұрын
This late switch is different than a normal switch where the two defenders hand each other off. The on-ball defender goes over the screen to prevent the 3 and the big contains. The Spurs do this on a regular basis. Just because it is a bit improvised does not mean it is not a strategy and not talked about in film sessions.
@pushingblocks
@pushingblocks 7 жыл бұрын
I understand what your saying, but you need to realise that this only occurs because the ball carriers defender gets caught up on the screen and taken out of the play. This is certainly not their intended strategy. The offense has a 2 on 1 situation so the screeners defender must commit to the ball to prevent a layup, which forces them to late switch... In some ways the name of it should tell you that its not an intended part of their strategy, i mean i can think of no situation on defence where you want to be late... ("they go over the screen to prevent the 3"), Switching normally already prevents the 3 but doesn't leave you with no one between the screener and the rim... ("they discuss this in film sessions"/"Spurs do this on a regular basis") It is the emergency response when the players make a mistake on conservative coverage. They most likely talk about in training camp when they do work on coverage, it comes up a lot because its extremely hard to play D in the nba or any any decent league really.

Based on this video (and watching a bunch of their playoff games) and looking at the stats, I think the Spurs were better off resigning Simmons and trying to trade Aldridge. Even a salary dump woulda been worth it. The lineup versatility with Simmons/Green/Kawhi was insane and those 3 together would've been great in the future vs. GSW and Houston!

Are you sure that Parker is considerably worse than Mills on D? I don't think so. Patty might be a great pest when he defends a ballhandler. But he gets hung up on screens more often than Parker. Tony also committs fewer mental lapses on D since he knows the system better. Patty's slight stature is a further disadvantage. Tony's main disadvantage on D is that he has accumulated a lot of miles, the same thing that has contributed to his decloine on offense
@coachdaniel8163
@coachdaniel8163 8 жыл бұрын
Yes. He's so much slower than Mills and that has a great impact. For example no way Parker would have gotten the steal Mills did at the end of the video.

sadly Tony's speed is significantly slower than when he is in his prime which is needed to guard the perimeter. but none the less he's still kicking ass out there one way or another

try to have a consistent theme yr trying to teach and connect the diff plays by this. its very hard for the human brain to follow 400 bits of diff info. its like me teaching you human biology and saying "the function unit of the kidney is the nephron" "nerves cells are effective conductors because of the myelinated sheath" "the 2 bones in the forearm are call the radius and ulnar" quite hard with these random bits. better to have an idea yr trying to show like "this structure is what the spurs contently have on D and it because them because of X" then show a diff bunch of clips that demonstrate yr point and go into the finer details of yr main statement
