2,000,000 casualties at the Battle of Rzhev, of which 1.3 million Soviet and 700,000 German. Russia and Belarus inaugurated a huge statue there a few years ago. Incomprehensible numbers.

My grandfather, born in 1910, a lance corporal in the Wehrmacht, fought in Rzhev. As a boy in the 1980s, I always tried to elicit something about the war from him, which was very difficult. The extreme cold snowy winters, the heat and mosquitoes in summer, the hunger and the enemy assaults at dawn were the cornerstones of the stories from the Eastern Front.

And the mud in Autumn...
@johnweerasinghe41394 күн бұрын
@michaelweigel2466 The Soviets faced the same conditions. The only difference is their machines were designed to work in the cold. Eg. The T34 had an air compressor that enabled it to start in the extreme cold. Why didn't the Nazis think of that ? The Germans were also from a cold country, so they could have prepared better, but their racism precluded them from imagining that they could beat the Russians in 3 weeks. So the Nazis brought that on themselves. Stop pretending they didn't know Russia would be cold and muddy. Those generals also served on the eastern front in 1914 and were fully aware of conditions in Russia.

The Germans did prepared and had plenty of winter clothing - at their home depot that was, as the Red army despite its disorganized fighting, did managed to sabotage their infrastructure and railway before Germans took them, hence the limited German railway logistics prevented sufficient winter clothing and stuff to reach the front on top of existing ammo demands

General Raus 4th Army played a big part in the Rhezv area. He wrote in his memoirs that he instigated up to 30km active recon to stop the build up of artillery tanks and soldiers. Another factor were the 2 railroads that were active along with a couple of airfields providing support. Raus made layered defence lines so troops temporarily fall back into prepared positions. Forests played a big part in lessening Russian pincer attacks with dug in artillery ready to smash the human wave attacks on the German lines.

Exactly! Even if things were vice versa with the Russians invading Germany we ALL know the Germans woulda probably won but just like with the Invasion of Napoleon the Russians repeat/using the same tactics.... Keep moving and retreat further and further hoping winter comes early while the invading army subcomes to lack of supplies, food, sickness and loses moral while the Enemy retreats farther and farther
@Mercnix1016 күн бұрын
@@Bossbossbeans Uhhh no. This is such a Nazi apologist take. Let's take your hypothetical scenario USSR would invade Germany, they would not have invaded in 1941 nor 42 due to USSR was reorganizing their military following Stalin's purges. On top of that, after reorganization, the USSR military would wait until they have enough men, equipment and material to launch an invasion. USSR industrial capacity would significantly outweighs Germany's industrial capacity following Stalin's 5 year plan. Even in the real events of ww2, USSR has always been on the offensives much of the time following Operation Uranus. And that took place when the German army was at its peak and Allied D-day has yet to happened. USSR decimated the German 6th Army in Stalingrad. Germany could not possibly win WW2 in any given scenario. The Germans fought well but it was a waste because they would never win in the first place.

WW2 was won by fuel, in planes, bombers, ships, tanks, and trucks, men on foot only won't helped Germany And the Fuhrer having some control of the military was the major reason why Germany didn't fell apart in 1942 and could still fought an attrition war against two biggest world power till mid 1945, as other German generals lacked his perspective on socio-economic strategies and adapting to the military situation. The generals knew how to use the troops and tanks for the most part, hence they did well in early war, but not how to get those troops and tanks after the existing batch was gone, so in later war the AH got involved more and more.

To put things right from the historic point of view the Germans lost precious time to conquered the Balkans & particularly in Greece the German army lost a month because of the Greek resistance then by the time turned east it was already too late because that gave time to the Russians to organized their forces much better on top of that the bad weather came much easier & made things worse for them it was stupid to attack Greece because Greece wasn't a threat for Germany at all !!! That alone cost them the beginning of the end!!! Russia is a huge space to conquered , no enough men & tanks ,bad roads ,bad communication & bad weather all played a role plus the will of the people to go on fighting !!!

In contrast to the other commenters, who found this video informative and well-produced, I have a different opinion. First, the maps were quite useless. The area mapped changed with every use, and the maps only were shown for a second or so, before the picture changed. From this things only went downhill. The chronology was nonexistent. Relative time exists in the video, but dates were few and far between. Then the rattling off of various numbers to identify the units engaged was so rushed that, along with the maps which came and went in a blink, it became impossible to have any idea of who was where and what the tactical position was or was intended. So, beyond the unstinting praise for the Germans, and the failure to so much as mention the Russian commanders, let alone discuss their battle orders, I cannot recommend this video as either informative or well-produced.
