Hello Brazilian brothers, is there any political, cultural, religious, geographical or class distinctions between who supports Botafogo, Flamenco, Fluminese or Vasco da Gama? For example do working class prefer one team or other or upper classes support one or the other? Thank you I know nothing about it and it interests me.

Vasco da Gama is the working class team because is the one that was founded in the poor side of the city (North Zone). Flamengo, Fluminense and Botafogo were founded in the rich part of the city (South Zone). All of these teams became popular for all brazilian territory, with big fanbases, but the history of Vasco da Gama is closely linked to the poorest. Their stadium was built by their fans. The club was excluded from championships in the first decades of Brazilian football for having workers and black ethnicity players. Currently, the club calls itself 'the legitimate club of the people', due to this history of struggle against the richer classes. In absolute numbers, Flamengo currently has the biggest crowd in the city, as it had strong support from the local press and dictatorial governments to promote the name of the club. However, in the regions with more poverty, there is a great balance between the number of Vasco fans and Flamengo fans.

The other guy said a bunch of bullshit. Vasco (which is his club) is indeed popular among the poor side of the city, but the most tradicional Vasco fan base are Portuguese descendents, which where the ones that actually created the club, and that's also why the club is named after a Portuguese sailor. Fluminense was always a club of the elite, and it still is, the social headquarters of Fluminense are next to the the palace of Rio's Governor, it's very popular in the South Zone of the city. Flamengo is popular among every class rich, poor and middle class, but people actually make fun of Flamengo fans as poor people. Botafogo is a club that had it's golden age back in the 60's and wasn't able to mantain their old glory, and that's why it's a popular club mainly among older people. To summarize, Fluminense is popular among the rich, Vasco among the Portuguese and poor, Botafogo old people and Flamengo pretty much everyone. In Rio there isn't a religious or political division among fans

@@marcelo497 Thank you Marcelo, I enjoyed both your comment and Lucas' comment. People naturally have some bias. I played with a Brazilian on my team in Belleville Canada who supported Botofogo. He had grey hair and would be around 50 years old now and left Brazil 25 years ago. Thank you again. edit: I asked him this question I asked above and he didn't really have an answer for me so now I know.
