This is based on true events. I worked during the time public transport prices in London went through the roof. It lasted only a few months before sense prevailed but it made many of us workers find alternative ways of getting to work in the 1980’s.

Mrs slocombe stayed in the store in the apartment episode and the entire staff had to in the camping ep too so Mr rumbold can stuff his little message about not staying overnight

I always thought Spooner was one of the weaker characters, along with that bozo they picked to replace Mr. Granger.

Mr Grainger was replaced by a lot of characters, as each one choose to leave the show after a short time. Sadly Arthur Brough who played Mr Grainger died in 1978, and so initially they replaced him with James Hayter. James lasted one series, as he was offered a huge commercial deal to do the voice over for Mr Kipling. Then came Alfie Bass who lasted one series, as he felt the character was too brash for the show. Then came Milo Sperber, who regretted joining the show after he recorded the first episode, as he felt was just out of place, and so he left mid series. Benny Lee took over for the remainder of that series, and then they never recast, and just handed the head of the department to Mr Humphries. Mr Spooner was brought in after Trevor Bannister chose to quit after the 1979 Christmas special, as he felt the show was becoming stale, and he was offered a large financial deal to do a west end play. Mike Berry, a singer was brought in. Sadly he found out they simply took lines already written for Trevor, and simply scratched Trevor's name out, so they never really ever wrote for Mike's style, they simply handed him Trevor's style of script.

Mr Harmon just explained to Rumbold that Mr Spooner could not afford the fare , and had to stay over , so why have a go at Mr Spooner , just because he is upper management level Rumbold does not mean he has to be so lack of compassion
