Fun Fact: the uploader Max Lebled was an animator on Stanley Parable 2013. You can see their name in the museum.
@MaxLebled2 жыл бұрын
I got credited for animation just for helping out a friend (who "actually" worked on the game) with a little thing that took me 5 minutes-a thing she didn't know how to do herself back then. To be specific, it was... the animation of unplugging the telephone from the wall. I didn't expect to be credited for this, so I was quite surprised when I found out 😅 I also localized the game into French-and THAT would be my "proper" credit-but it was a completely voluntary and unpaid thing, because I wanted non-English speakers from my country to be able to enjoy the game. My translation probably has a few embarrassing errors. I've done "actual" professional localization since then, though 😃 (on "Chicory: A Colorful Tale")

In The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, it's possible to get to this old map by falling into one of the goals of the Rocket League map and then falling down again. Just a nice little tribute to the original Stanley Parable. Of course, in the Ultra Deluxe Edition, the halls of the old complex are run down and shut off, as that version of the game was long abandoned. Kind of surreal, if you ask me...

It's funny coming back to this after playing the new version. One thing I find interesting is the change in tone and roles of the narrator. Here in the original mod he feels like an antagonistic entity that punishes you whenever you stray from the path he intended. In the newer version(s), although he remains highly antagonistic in some of the endings, other paths will make him rather sympathetic to the player or just be as baffled as Stanley at what happens around them.

One thing I always love about the Stanley parable is the way it introduces the whole concept. You walk up to two doors, and the narrator tells you to enter the left one, despite it being very easy to walk through the other. It instantly introduces the idea of choices in the game in a way that the player can very quickly pick up on. There's no tutorial introducing it, or pop up saying there are branching paths. The game simply presents an option, and says to take one, despite the other being very easy to take. And human curiosity will, eventually, win and make the player explore the other paths. Even in 2011, it's an incredibly easy, simple, and most importantly, effective way to introduce the game's concept.

Until I saw the other endings, I didn't realize that the first ending is just as screwy as all the others. I mean, the narrator spends the whole of the ending telling you about how you're free now, but the whole time, you've been his slave.
@billygoatguy39602 жыл бұрын
This is WAY late, but i can also think of it the opposite way, when the player takes control it ISN'T stanley, it's the player! By that logic at the end of the story Stanley regains control of himself and attains freedom. It's such flexible writing that you can fill in between the lines yourself and it can be equally as fullfilling. In the future editions of the game it's more relevant when there's an ending where the narrator realizes that the player is not Stanley, but a human that has agency. Even further, there's an ending where the narrator realizes that HE created the character Stanley when he became unsatisfied with his own life.

I've been playing the ultra deluxe version recently. Seeing the original map of the game has made me realize that one of the lines in the ultra deluxe (or maybe 2013 version, I'm not certain) version is a lot cooler than I thought it was. Spoilers beyond this point, I guess. In the final ending shown here, we see how the game would play out without the narrator present. Of course, the narrator is still there, he just doesn't say anything. In the ultra deluxe edition, the narrator loads up other games, rather than other maps, with the final one being rocket League. After entering the rocket League stadium, you have the option to jump into a hole underneath the goal post. After jumping down into this hole, you find yourself in an area clearly abandoned, half constructed and gathering dust. Upon entering this area, the narrator proclaims, although faintly, that he cannot follow you into that area. You can then fall further, upon which point you find yourself in the map from the original mod, albeit dilapidated and with failing power. The area you fall into is the door leading to the room with two doors, but it's closed so you are unable to enter it. You backtrack to room 427, and the screen cuts to black, before the narrator wonders what Stanley discovered in this location. Based off the reaction of the narrator, it makes sense that the map would be the same one as the original game, since he couldn't interact with that area, so it wouldn't be updated for the new game. Pretty neat. Also, hearing Radiohead at the end of this was mind-boggling for me

So this version focused a lot more on the darker ideas and less on humorous reactions of the narrator

And "Stanley decided to go to the meeting room. He needed help and guidance from his peers, so the idea of total solitude scared him." That was an alternative line for Stanley thinking he missed a memo.

such a fascinating version. kind of looks janky and unpolished compared to the 2013 & ultra deluxe versions but the ideas and base concepts are all here. it's had an incredibly strong concept from the start and im glad the team was able to take it as far as they did. it's so unique as a game and that's why it's easily one of my favourites, and this is an interesting bit of history to show how all of that began.

10 years on and the uploader is still replying to some comments. The new game has revived this video. It's cool to see an early developed game using many half-life assets.

After having his own game for once, Stanley decided to watch the moment where he still don't have his own game. Seeing the video turn into either a replay button or a playback button, Stanley decided to check out the comment section. Perhaps he might find someone reacting to it. Coming upon the comment section itself, Stanley found nothing but an argument so old, they aren't replies that look like what it is nowadays. Stanley, not caring whatever the hell it was even all about, shared the situation on Shadbase. Perhaps someone would punish these aggressive people by making NSFW out of them. Right after posting, the break is over, so Stanley went back to his room, pushing buttons again. Alone. Forever.

are you kidding me this is amazing! When it comes to exploring how we tell stories through games and how choice and narration work this is groundbreaking, games are more then COD and mario, to many of us true videogamers they can be a form of artistic expression another medium much like film or literature.This mod is fantastic

Damn watching this after the newest version of the game came out is such a bizarre experience from the darker themes and the hl2 assets even down to the music.

"Go ahead, play with those controls all you like. The real controls are where I'm sitting." Though it's not canon beyond this mod, that line does add some nice insight to the HD Remix and Ultra Deluxe.

This is extremely creepy. Its about a guy, who doesn't realize hes in a source game, a slave to the designer of the map, even in the first ending when it says hes free, he really isn't. Also, in the part where you activate the generator, is it possible to stop the timer?
@tylern64205 жыл бұрын
It's a hl2 mod/a game before a game, but I don't know where the timer appears, but I saw comments saying "no, it's not possible, unless you mod a mod/hack the game"

When I first entered this area in the other games ending I was so creeped out, I had no idea it was from the original concept! It's interesting to see how the game changed in just those few years between this and the release. The insanity ending feels much more brutal in this version, and I wish the 2013 and ultra deluxe version had an actual escape ending, like here (though if Stanley enters this version in the other games endings, he might stumble upon the escape sooner or later). I also love the little things that got referenced, like the nightsharks, and how some things were reused in a different concept, like the narrator's famous drugs and hookers line.

Y'know, watching this, it's kind of interesting that I feel like the narrator is a lot less hostile in most paths in the later versions (and even *friendly* in many of the Ultra Deluxe ones). But here, the narrator just seems to be a real jerk.
