Mavis is the embodiment of Soul. A singer of the time, that we will never ever see again

Pops, Cleotha and Yvonne were all very talented (also brother Pervis), but Mavis is/was in a class by herself. Her voice is unique, and she has an unerring feel for the music and innate sense of musicality. She was the heart and "soul" of the Staple Singers.

Great group. The Staples Singers were ahead of their time. I remembered them when l was a young kid growing up in the 1970's and 1980's. Their music was prolific in artistry and spiritually, up lifting. They sung messages that taught values such as "Respect Yourself." They hold their rightful place in the world of music. Marva Staples is still alive and singing the song to this day. Their music will live in the hearts of many and for future generations to enjoy!!! 😊🎶 🎵

I came upon them by accident when I was scouring the discount bins in the record store my freshman year in college. I saw this gospel record from the early/mid 60s and, even though I wasn't into gospel music, I bought it and fell in love with it. Then, lo and behold, The Staples Singers started singing secular music and they blew me away - especially Mavis, of course. There wasn't and isn't anyone else like her. I got to meet them in the early 70s, but it was a strange PR thing and everyone felt awkward. The girls seemed shy and just stuck together, but Pops went around the room and, to every single person, introduced himself, shook their hand, and thanked them for coming. He's remains the most charming gentleman (and he was a gentleman) I ever met. I was so sad when he passed on. I hope Mavis keeps on forever!

I hope you have witnessed the sublime talents of the Staple Singers as part of the greatest rock documentary of all time ..The Last Waltz - The Band's final concert before calling it quits directed by Martin Scorsese ? The song The Weight was performed by both groups in unison on a soundstage and is ridiculously brilliant ,as is the entire concert film . If you are unaware of the movie ,id strongly suggest that it is a must see in order to get on with your life afterwards ...its that good . Musicality of the finest grade possible !
