The National Symphony Orchestra performs Igor Stravinsky's arrangement of the Star-Spangled Banner.
Part of "Portraits of America," January 22, 2017
Gianandrea Noseda, conductor
According to Wikipedia, "Stravinsky's unconventional dominant seventh chord in his arrangement of the "Star-Spangled Banner" led to an incident with the Boston police on 15 January 1944, and he was warned that the authorities could impose a $100 fine upon any "re-arrangement of the national anthem in whole or in part". The police, as it turned out, were wrong. The law in question merely forbade using the national anthem "as dance music, as an exit march, or as a part of a medley of any kind", but the incident soon established itself as a myth, in which Stravinsky was supposedly arrested, held in custody for several nights, and photographed for police records."

If you think about it, the dissonant chords make sense because in the actual Star Spangled Banner poem it's not just a series of statements. Some of the lines are questions and inquiries.

This is my favorite version of the anthem. It conserves the original, yet changes too high pitched notes to lower ones.

actually not tho pop singers sing "o'er the land of the free" too high and the song can't fit into any tessitura so he changed tenor 1 part a third higher.

Out of all orchestras that I've heard play Stravinsky's version, it seems like they don't like to bring out the dissonances. That's what makes this pop.

Just because it is Stravinsky does not mean dissonance. The goal of his arrangement was to make it easier to sing, not to produce some avant garde crap.

I think the I7 sounds akward… I guess the point is to try and place some tension behind a note which, narratively speaking, wants to be climactic, but my ear just wants to hear the 4 chord afterwards even though I know the melody doesn’t rly allow for it. Kinda just makes me feel all confused idk

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?🇺🇸🎼🎵🎶🎻🎺

Despite the ardent rendition, I don't find it particularly good. It's not Stravinski-esque/creative; nor is it an improvement on other conventional arrangements. I think some of the voice leading, and especially the bass lines, start out with promise, but then just end their phrases awkwardly. :^/ Having said all that, it's fun to hear an unfamiliar version of the tune, from a really unique 20th century musical mind! And I did kinda like how long the Bb pedal lasted, starting at 0:36. :^>
