I think one of the biggest things that you might of missed is that Tatum looks down almost every time he drives. It's much harder to control your body or gauge how far you are from the basket if you only look up at the last second. Partly why he can still finish if there's no big man there

This has been an issue for Tatum for a while. He has a tendency to jump forward, but not up, so he lacks elevation over defenders. Look at Jaylen Brown for contrast, who knows how to power up HIGH, not lunge forward.

Pointing this out is going to be great for Tatum's career. I remember when Klay couldn't make layups, we called his missed attempts Klay Ups. He got better, became a cutting threat, and unfortunately tore his ACL. I remember the knock on Jaylen Brown being a one-handed player. Last season he's shown better control with his left hand, and that led to him becoming the finals MVP. I remember Kobe said that KD was easy to guard because his shot started from across his face. He got that fixed and became one of the most prolific scoring threats ever. Lonzo had the same problem, fixed it, and shot an elite percentage from three. I hope more people see this and start calling out Tatum so he can get to work on fixing this issue.

That's also why he's so effective with his drive and kick game with the Celtics. I made a longer post, but I want to emphasize something about Tatum. He is less than stellar OVERALL as a player because he exerts no consistent downhill pressure when he's on the ball. That wouldn't be bad if he didn't also form the whole framework of his playing style around this. Tatum is on paper probably just one of the best slashers in the league--so good in fact that the team also seems to be okay with letting him play out of that role, trying to develop him into a superstar. The problem is that slashers don't make superstars. They make roleplayers. Some other problems in his game: 1. Tatum has the frame of a player like Giannis, but plays with like 0 force--I've literally seen him pushed off his spot by small guards 2. Tatum has no off-the dribble 3pt package, but insists on making this shot with regularity, despite it being like his worst shot in terms of the efficiency 3. Tatum looks like a superstar in the regular season, but falls off in the playoffs, because he doesn't like on-ball pressure, but they have him handling the ball way too much For #3, we can argue that Dallas threw the wrong coverages at Tatum this past playoffs. He's more than a willing passer, so you shouldn't play Tatum for the pass on a team where he's surrounded with above average finishers. You should play him to pick up the dribble with the end goal of making him believe he has to be the one to make the shot--i.e. don't over play his dribble. Just put enough pressure that he feels like he needs to make that funky double crossover play. He doesn't properly decelerate when going full tilt downhill and so he usually whiffs on the layups having them bounce off the front of the rim. That's a control issue, which is ultimately a footwork issue--he's not confident nor dynamic enough in his handle to be picking up the dribble later or to be making any non-obvious move. How many times have you seen Tatum make a power hop? How many times have you seen him do a proper Eurostep where he doesn't telegraph it (his acceleration never changes properly)? How many times have you seen him bully someone and back them down on a post up? How often have you seen him do a proper clean spin move at the basket? He's taken his slashing game and tried to use it as his "at-the-rim" package... and that just DOESN'T fly. The problem is he's so talented that even with his mountain of deficiencies, he's still able to be effective. I consider him like players like Brandon Ingram or Andrew Wiggins, but with more will to be competitive every night. That's his saving grace. He'll probably not retire with major accolades at this rate... but he can EASILY turn it around. I think part of it is that he needs to be needed more so he can learn to improve. His team has always been too stacked to force him through those growing pains. Don't get me started on his crossover. He hasn't mastered using the offhand and atticking the foot of the defender properly. As a result, he does it crossovers too wide and gives the defense too much time to recover.

I only really know Curry in terms of watching a lot of his layups, but he has all sorts of locations he can jump from: left, right, early, reverse layup. And then midair, he has so much touch and can delay his shot or do high backboard shots to get around defenders. So much harder to tell when and where the ball is going up.

With how tall Tatum is, he should have even more options than Curry does. His height opens up the opportunity to dunk the ball outright, or see more passing lanes. Steph, Kyrie, Parker, and the like have to lay it in because their height and athleticism don't really lead to too many dunks, and therefore they have less options. They have to work on their layup and floater package to compensate. If someone with Tatum's height has Kyrie's rim scoring, it makes him even more unpredictable.

Celtic fan here loved the video. But on a positive note I want casuals to realize yes this was not Tatum’s best work in terms of efficiency but his passing and rebounding were incredible and mentally he did not check out at any point in the playoffs he found a way to be effective guys like Luka and embiid would have given up. I'm a professional sports bettor, and one of the things I've noticed about Tatum is that his right side weighs more than his left. This is true for a lot of NBA players, and its a weakness that creates increasing complications the larger and taller a person is. Chris Paul has a similar issue, and a lot of his game is predicated on counters going back to his right or pulling up. Jimmy Butler is in a similar boat. Lebron for instance is more evenly weighted, and is extremely good at going both left and right and finishing with either hand, same with Curry. It just gives you more options. The second thing that comes to mind from my observations is that there are levels to understanding angles at the NBA level. Harden and Tim Duncan are great to watch in this respect. The shortest distance to the rim is not "head first" its generally going to be your shoulder. Secondly, there's more or less 3 lanes to the rim that you should check off, and 5 for more skilled finishers (kyrie). The front of the rim, the left side, the right, and for the more skilled, you add the left and right backboards. That being said, I would also want to point out Tatum is generally very good at playing patiently, and smoothly, and he's gotten better at using his size. On the whole, I would say there's more good than bad about his game. Just my few cents.

Jt has no left. It's really that simple and help defenders are shading the lanes so JT uses long right layups at full speed that is off. Teams scout off this as a general because there is more right-handed players in the league. If he gets a left, it basically opens up a whole new bag and counters. Half spin to the left away from help. Crossover to drive away from defenders strong hand. He can make the defense second guess shading a particular side of the floor when he gets the ball.

As a Celtics fan, it really comes down to him trying to play like an elite athlete, when he’s only an above average athlete at best. He’s not as strong or explosive as JB, but he tries to play like he is. He either needs to bulk up and become a bulldozer like Luka or become more explosive like a young KD.

The problem with Tatum is he is focused on baiting fouls instead of actually finishing it strong. For instance small players like Iverson, they don't care about the fouls, they know they will get it, so they are focus on really making the shot. Tatum anticipates so much, he thinks too much. He gets distracted so much.

I always have doubts with him during clutch time because of this thought pattern. Why not be yourself and use your advantages to play the game easy. Drive, bully or duno on anyone. I'm not sure if it'll get mentioned later in the video (only about three or so minutes in), but one thing I've noticed that Tatum will do a lot is the forearm shiver to clear space. It always irked me that, especially this last year, it's become too obvious to keep being missed as an offensive foul (which it needs to be called, it's as textbook as it gets), but it makes a lot more sense why he would use it so often in the context of this video. It effectively ensure that first defender isn't any sort of obstruction to the basket, so then he doesn't keep making these wild cuts to the hoop that are almost reminiscent of Derrick Rose's acrobatics that end up making the shots more difficult than they need to be. The difference, obviously, is even with his eventually busted knees, Derrick had much better general control, was able to get closer so he didn't need to add extra power and/or spin when stating his layups that then lead the ball to go careening in any direction but into the hoop. I mainly would contend Tatum, and not just him as it's an epidemic of modern basketball, needs to improve his footwork. Even if it sort of works, his motions on his cuts start out very good and then kind of explode like a test plane in a hangar at some point, usually the closer he gets to the hoop, and he should probably be taking off sooner, or moving slower so that all his directional changes aren't at a whiplash pace, forcing him to do Blake Griffin-esque twists and turns just to try to face the basket again. If he improves his footwork, he can control his speed & agility, which will help him turn & rotate better and more deliberately, and thus not be so easily defeated by the mere concept of a traffic cone with legs just walking into his vision at the hoop. He would also not need to use the forearm shiver to create the most ideal path to the basket for himself, thus removing any future chance of getting called of really easily avoidable chicken-wing offensive fouls that a dude at his skill level shouldn't be leaning on.

I think a easy fix to Tatum's problem is to take one more dribble at paint and take off two feet. His handle is never that tight so he is used to gather and take off early, which leads to unconsistency and broken lay up techique. He should learn from Jimmy, and even his own teamate Jaylen.

havent finished the video yet, but i do believe this issue is not only the reason he was injured in game 7 vs the heat in 2023, but the reason he is a very “guard” like forward. a very prominent criticism of jayson tatum is the underuse of his height and strength at 6’9 only shooting 3s. he hasnt fixed the problems his own role model pointed out years ago and this may be due to the lack of confidence at the rim and the success from deep out.

He is always playing that "long game" when driving. Basically trying to maximize his length where he becomes too streched out to have decent body control. As a complete amateur, I see couple solutions for him: 1. Don't drive always at the same speed, change the rhythm 2. Better deceleration: either better posterior backchain, core or quads need to get better at this. 3. Learn better off balance shots . Kyrie comes to mind, but we are again talking about body control 4. Don't always go to the basket with same idea on your mind: to swivel around defenders by being taller/longer than them 5. Add some mid range pull up, to mix things up and learn better deceleration

He has nearly no in-between game, its been one of Tatums biggest problems. Tatums offense is either contested stepback three or drive to the rim, thats why his percentages are bad in the playoffs. Guys like Luka, Dbook, Ant can still get a shot off if those shots are taken away, because they have a stronger handle and can probe the defense better or pull up in the mid-range

In earlier years, he was doing some mid ranges, these days is just threes and drives, but to be fair, he does have some back to the basket mid range game. But he can't stop on the dime during drives and pull up, to make things more unpredictable. Again, not good at deceleration. Plus, I don't remember ever seeing him doing some kind of floater. All in all, that's why I think his productivity oscillates that much

He lacks patience is afraid of initiating contact. he sees space and runs towards it I agree with your point that he needs to mess with the timing of the big coming. If he can take a second to read the help he can establish his passing game as a threat and from there manipulate the help defense something guys like Luka and Chris Paul are very good at sometimes just stopping for half a second mid drive can make a massive difference

I think it's mostly his lack of spin finesse. The highest-percentage finishers like Curry are so adept at knowing the perfect "English" or spin to put on their layups to offset their high closing speed or angle.
