I thought it was common knowledge that Kobe was a highschool superstar and that's why he jumped to the NBA. The reason he went 13th and had to come off the bench for 2 years was because he was a guard. and he was the only guard in NBA history at the time to jump straight to the NBA. People just thought it would be too tough for him right away. KG was a monster coming into the league so they were less worried. But Kobe was being called the new MJ before he even touched an NBA court and people were waiting for them to face off in Kobe's first season. And even though he didn't start until year three, he was so popular that he was voted as an all star starter in year 2. The internet wasn't what is was back then but trust me. Kobe didn't just come out of nowhere.
@kerry-j4m3 ай бұрын
Kobe didn't start because he had Eddie Jones ( a proven vet ) starting at his position and Coach Del Harris didn't believe in starting rookies because he was an old school nba coach. And in an interview Nick Van excel critized Kobe for missing dunks in games,plus Kobe couldn't guard other players.Yes,he could score,but,on defense he wasn't that good. Del Harris tried to bench Kobe for mistakes made in games,but,some one from up stairs would come to the bench and tell him put the rook back in the game.So,from the-JUMP-Kobe wasn't getting the lessons he needed to learn or the discipline from a veteran head coach he dearly needed.
@jacoblee57963 ай бұрын
@@kerry-j4mNone of that really matters. 17-18 year old Kobe wasn’t better than Eddie Jones or Nick Van Exil at that time. It doesn’t matter who the coach was, Kobe wasn’t starting over those two. Kobe took a couple years to grow and develop and there is nothing wrong with that.
@kerry-j4m3 ай бұрын
@@jacoblee5796 It does matter who the coach is,he dictates your time on the court,Harris was an old school nba coach who wouldn't start a rookie player.Meanwhile Lebron started as a rookie right out of high-school,so,Lebron was the better player than Kobe at that time.

kobe's legacy is cemented as one of the greatest in NBA history. sometimes i wonder how different his legacy would look if 1) he managed to get along with Shaq 2) colorado incident never happened. it's also worth noting that most of kobe's prime years were wasted on trash rosters, and a lot of kobe's injuries that held him back in the latter half of his career were an indirect result of overworking himself to carry those trash rosters during his prime.

He was the best player and scorer in the nba from 2002-2011, the dead ball era where games barely games finished over 90 points. Widely considered number 2 behind Jordan or at the least top 5 all time. Now , in the last 5 years people act like he was just a shot chucker and barely top 10 somehow. Just to prop up other players. Kobe’s school was about 30 minutes outside of Philadelphia it was considered in the tri-state severely suburban part of the tri-state one of the wealthiest in the country! It's for Divac that Kob got traded. In 01 they got it 3 zip againts Portland. As much as they want to hype Ai in 01 season that's why they gave him the MVP but theu were playing in Leastern conference. And Ai had a field season as the offense he got 80% through him. But the real MVP thay season was Kob. He got the Offense only max of 50% because he's playing with Shaq. But still got those 28.5 a game. And that Finlas MVP of Shaq is nothing but lameness. He played only 4 great games and won the award while.Kob was the workhorse of the Lakers in about 8-9 games of WC playoffs. That's why that Finals MVP should be remove and replace it with Playoffs MVP. Imagine Shaq can rest for 11 games and just play 4 great games he bags the award. What DAF award that is!

18:45 yeah man, 2002 WAS NOT 2024, dudes didn't have 40 ft of spacing around them and defenders were _actually allowed to play defense._ High 40's FG % was pretty damn common for perimeter guys back then. Kobe was never head and shoulders above everyone because he took crazy shots, but he was also never as bad as haters make him out to be.

Kobe didn't have the impact that LeBron did coming into the NBA. But neither was he just some guy. He was definitely being discussed as the heir to Jordan coming out of high school. You gotta remember they didn't draft kids out of highschool at the time. Garnett was basically the first since those two guys in the 70s and that was just the year before Kobe was drafted. Garnett was considered a much more finished product and he went 5 in the draft. Kobe was definitely being talked about as the heir to Jordan but it was also assumed a kid that age, and Kobe was 17 when he was drafted the youngest player in the history of the NBA (Jermaine O'Neal was drafted in the same draft younger but didn't play his first game until a month later). It was assumed a kid that age would need four years or more to develop. Also I honestly feel that Kobe would have went top 10 either way but I think things were... manipulated to get Kobe to the Lakers. It certainly felt that way at the time. Jerry West wanted Kobe, the league was happy to have the young star in LA, and it's like no one in the league really pushed back against the idea. The whole thing was kind of strange. On the one hand Kobe was the most hyped draft pick in a decade but in the other he went 14th. Anyway I think it's what the league wanted. Kobe in LA. He was a also a teen heartthrob in a way LeBron wasn't. Like he was on the cover on those teenage girl magazines. Lol. He was definitely big.
@chrisdavis21613 ай бұрын
I think that your first statement is subjective. When Kobe came out, no one wanted him to be ANYTHING. They thought he could be the next Jordan, but jordan was still playing at the time. When Lebron came out, they already wanted him to be the face of the league and gave him all these nicknames and hype. No one was going to hand Kobe what Cleveland handed Lebron straight out of HS, even though Kobe proved that he was able to be that guy in the summer league. Those were different times in the NBA. It had nothing to do with Kobe's level of talent vs Lebron and everything to do with what the leadership was trying to do at the time. 96 was a loaded draft class out of college. So was 2003 but Kobe wasn't a #1 draft pick... he was a "future" draft pick vs a "now" draft pick

1 thing that should also be pointed out is that also despite kobe comin out of highschool putting up the numbers he did. Gettin drafted 13th. & media sayin hes not ready. Too young. Even saying they didnt want him in the league.. but in the 97 schick rookie game kobe outplayed and outscored all players that was selected b4 and after him in the draft... lead all scorers with 31 while allen iverson had 17. Iverson won mvp because his team won. Just sayin.. so much 4 a kid that wasnt ready..bein younger than everyone But also ouplaying high draft picks and prospects and guys that was well seasoned in college that went on to have thier own teams

Wow a PF avg 18-10 truly a super team 🤦♂️ there about 10+ PFs putting up the same stats as Gasol was back then he could have won with a lot of players he just needed a non G League starting lineup

No matter what your opinion of Pau is, I think mentioning the fact that he existed at least once during this 32 minute video probably would have been a more complete telling of Kobe Bryant's story. Completely omitting him and not mentioning his name once is absolutely wild.
