While it might be argued that Star Wars has had its legacy tarnished a bit by too much content since Lucasfilm was acquired by Disney, it can’t be denied that the original Star Wars Trilogy ranks as perhaps the most iconic series of science-fiction movies ever made. All these years later, so Star Wars: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi stand the test of time?

Mine, too. From one First Generation fan to another, we were at the right age for when STAR WARS came out. We were old enough to be in awe at the spectacle that is STAR WARS and young enough to want EVERYTHING that had STAR WARS on it.

In 1977, I was eight years old and my uncle and his son took me to see Star Wars in theaters. From beginning to end, my eyes were glued to the screen, I didn’t want any popcorn or no soda. I just want to see this movie. After that, I was hooked I got all the toys like the millennium falcon, the XWing, and a tie fighter, and most of the figures. I’ve seen all three movies, many many times, but the original Star Wars a new Hope, I saw that over 50+ times And I still watch the movie on Disney+. I love Star Wars!

The night I saw Star Wars for the 1st time I didn't sleep, I was still up and staring at the ceiling when the sun rose. In school on the following Monday, the teacher gave up trying to stop us talking about it. It's hard to express just how radical a thing it was at the time, it was a fulcrum shift in what we could expect in an adventure film. I went to see Empire with a friend along with his mom and sister. When we arrived and saw the block long line his mom wanted to go see something else. I told her "I don't know what YOU are seeing today I am watching THIS, I'll walk home if I have to"

Sorry, I gotta be the old man yelling at clouds😂. Nobody who saw the film in 1977 called it A New Hope. But I understand why it’s called that now. The home video generation grew up with that title gracing every VHS (from the special edition onwards), DVD, Blu-Ray, and streaming thumbnail. That said, this is still very well done video.

Return of the Jedi was my very first Star Wars movie as a kid, and because of that it's still my absolute favourite as it's got so much nostalgia attached to it. I wore out all 3 VHS tapes for all 3 movies, but Jedi is the one that was the most worn out, and also the one I watched so many times I had every single line in the movie memorized as an 9-yo kid. It's so sad that Hollywood has completely forgotten how to make fun movies that entertain, I hope once the strike is over, the people who remain will recall that, and we'll get something of a Renaissance for the entire movie industry. At least one can dream....

In 1977 I was only four and my parents assumed I was to young to take me to the theatre to watch A New Hope but three years later I saw Empire at the theatre and remember it like it was yesterday. To this day its my all time fav movie and if I was only allowed to watch one last Movie that would be it for sure, I still view it at least once a year and it always gives me a warm nostalgic almost like being at home feeling. I went to see Return of the Jedi in concert at the Seattle Symphony last June with my roommate who hadn't seen it yet. I thought that it would be a perfect way to finish the original trilogy for him, and it sure was perfect. The orchestra played every single musical piece perfectly. All that was missing was the choir at the end of the Vader vs Luke vs Palpatine fight but that was it. I still think it's a fantastic movie and has some of my favorite battles in it and scores.

As an adult the Ewok hate is really only because of the internet and because it became a trend for people who can’t form their own opinions. Having humanoid bears isn’t that far of a stretch for a movie with humanoid dogs (Wookiee) and wolf etc and as we know from ants and other real life animals strength is not always relevant to size so then defeating one legion of troops (not that many) isn’t that far fetched. Plus almost no adults were bothered by them in reviews or word of mouth in the 80’s and 90’s. It’s a pure lie they weren’t liked just like the lie ESB wasn’t liked when it came out at first. Stop being a sucker for trends. Almost no one dissed on the Ewoks or cared until the people who can’t think for themselves heard it was a trend on the internet

I totally disagree. I was a kid when I saw RotJ, in theaters. The hate for the Ewoks was very much alive and well, and the conversation was of Lucas bending to corporate greed in creating cute characters that would sell as toys. Star Wars action figures and toys were Huge back then. The backlash for the Ewoks was big, and Lucas himself said he was making these movies for kids, not adults.

I saw all of the originals in the theater - at first I didn't like the first one, but then became obsessed. I was disappointed with Empire, but then loved it. Return of the Jedi has some great action - speeders through the redwoods! Nevertheless, the only part of the third I don't care for as much is the return of the Death Star - I think a new final challenge would make the Rebel's victory feel a little less obvious. Nevertheless, great retrospective!

People complain about this change but it makes sense. The Ewoks are now more lifelike and less creepy, and it turns out George always intended for the Ewoks to blink, but they couldn't get the blinking to work in the masks, so they fixed it years later with CGI. Not a big deal at all, but people will always find reasons to hate on George Lucas no matter how minor or reasonable a change is.

@Bluerocket4739 Hello. Jedi. I still have the same opinion now as when seeing it first age 16. I enjoyed it, but I thought it went on the silly humour side. The rubber puppets did not help, and the ewoks were in it far too much. There wasn't enough story, and I thought the actors seemed bored. I did like the rescue of Han. As soon as Luke was on the Death Star and the space battle started, we were back to proper Star Wars. The fight between Luke and Vader was incredible, and the music inspired genius. It was a satisfying end to an amazing trilogy.

Star Wars is definitely THE most influential franchise in how Sci Fi films look today. That's undeniable. But I wouldn't say they are the greatest Sci-Fi films. Not even of their own decades. The 70's had Clockwork Orange and Alien. The 80's had Blade Runner and Aliens. Since then there has been Moon, Terminator 2, Wall-e, Children of Men and a handful of others. I would rather watch any of these movies over the original Star Wars (A New Hope) and Return of the Jedi. The whole franchise is elevated by the greatness of Empire Strikes Back. Lucas is technically brilliant, and can plot a storyline. He stumbles over directing actors and creating dialogue. This gets really obvious when you consider the all too apparent weaknesses of Episodes 1-3.

Were the original movies great? Yes. Did they capture the imagination of young and old moviegoers for decades? Yes. Are these the greatest movies of all time? Its debatable, various parts of the original trilogy had deficiencies, stilted dialogue and replacing Ewoks at the end for merchandising being Chief amongst them. The original Star wars movies definitely benefited from being right place right time as they benefited from a skilled storyteller working his craft. I firmly believe that much of the adulation for these movies simply comes from our rose-tinted memories of them and to be idyllic childhood we wish we could revisit. Let's not forget that there have been decades of video games, novels, role-playing games, you name it that helped to cement this universe in our memories. These movies are good but I don't know if I would be listing them as the greatest.

I use this movie, and the Mummy, as examples when someone tries to discuss with me about why, as a woman, I don't believe in a lot of current feminism. It's not about quantity, but quality. Leia, and Evelyn, are the only females in the main group but they're as worth it as the men (or more, looking at you Jonathan (JK, I love that idiot)). Both girls and boys need good role models, both female and male, to learn the best traits of one's gender and the best traits to look for on a friend, and even eventually, a partner. You can put seven "sheroes" in a movie, but if all together, they are not as good and worth it as Leia is, then it's useless.

As a member of the generation old enough to have seen the original trilogy in theaters, I will once again denounce this revisionist “A New Hope” nonsense. The first film is - and always will be - titled “STAR WARS.” Dassit!

If you really had to categorize the films they actually probably are more fantasy, the just have sci-fi trappings around it.

I don't feel that any film or series that followed the original trilogy has or could tarnish them. What has tarnished them, in my mind, has been the Special Editions. Not because they exist or that the work was carried out, but because in doing them Lucas then felt the films, as they were witnessed and enjoyed originally, had no further purpose. One of the reasons I did not like the Phantom Menace was how I felt I was sat watching a friend play a computer game. The CGI and staging was unbearable. When I replaced my lost copies of the original trilogy with the Silver VHS box set I despaired. Every copy of Star Wars that followed on VHS, DVD or Bluray just got worse. I ended up collecting Laserdiscs just for a decent copy that did not have Lucas's crayon paintings daubed over every other frame. Being something of a completist, if the original trilogy were to be released in its original de-specialised form, on bluray, I would more than likely complete the series. And I am sure I'd not be the only one. Until that day Star Wars will remain conspicuous by its absence.

You're far too rough on Jedi. Particularly your comments on Hamill's version of Luke in this film. The portrayal was the perfect progression of where the character was meant to go.

Star Wars use of practical effects really helps to keep that timeless quality to it. Episodes I-III look terrible with all the CGI and have aged poorly.

While I thoroughly enjoy these movies, the title for best sci-fi movie has to go to 2001.

It's only superficially Sci-fi. It's a fantasy adventure film. That's what the new ones don't understand and get wrong. We're dealing with swords (lightsabers), sorcery (the force), wizards (jedis), farm boys (luke) etc etc. It's a fantasy film with some light sci fi window dressing.

The OG can't be underrated. You can't love the prequels without loving the original trilogy. If Ep 4 had no success there would not have been 5, 6 1, 2 or 3. The sequels are just a waste of 6 hours of your life. They should've been shown straight to video or whatever

Star Wars died in 1980, and that's coming to you from someone that was there, on the ground, and in the theater. Trust me Star Wars died after The Empire Strikes Back. Everything made after this was a chase for the cash cow. There was no more pursuit of a good story or movie making.

I will say this with absolute certainty. The Special Editions did nothing to improve (in fact I'd hurt) the originals.

Calling the original "A New Hope" is one of the creator's needless tinkerings
@alfredvickers4054
@alfredvickers4054 Жыл бұрын
Nope. It was always the middle of a larger story. Star Wars was the name of the series so it had to be given a subtitle to fit with the rest of the series. It wouldn't make sense for the 4th film in a series to randomly have no subtitle.
@macinvictus
@macinvictus Жыл бұрын
@alfredvickers4054 It took me like 0 seconds to look up the original 1977 opening crawl....No subtitle at all. I can pull out the DVD of the originals and find the same. Let alone having watched it my whole 43 years on the earth and it never having that subtitle until.ages after it's release
@alfredvickers4054
@alfredvickers4054 Жыл бұрын
@@macinvictus I didn't say there was always a subtitle. I said the movie was always meant to be part of a larger sequence of episodes, so of course it needs a subtitle added to be like the others. Empire always had Episode V attached and shortly after that the original was rereleased with the Episode IV: A New Hope title. Even before the prequels were made it was meant to be specifically Episode IV in the sequence of stories. The movies are meant to be viewed in chronological order, so no subtitle for the original movie (4th in sequence) would be bizarre. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith Star Wars Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi See how out of place that would be? It's a reasonable change and nothing worth complaining about.

Most people saw the film in the cinema in 1977. It was just called Star Wars.
@alfredvickers4054
@alfredvickers4054 Жыл бұрын
@@DarranSims What do you mean by "most people"? The film has been out for 46 years. The film was rereleased in 1981 as Episode IV: A New Hope. It has always had that subtitle ever since. Further generations have seen the films over the decades. For most fans of the original film, it has always been called Episode IV: A New Hope. Only a small minority of Star Wars fans today saw it without the subtitle back in 1977. Once the 2nd film was released as Episode V, it made sense to go back and call the 1st one Episode IV. And especially once the prequels were made, it would be ridiculous for it to have no subtitle: Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith Star Wars Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi It's a perfectly reasonable and necessary change. It is a minor change that doesn't actually alter the contents of the film. The plot and characters remain intact. It's a subtitle, nothing to get worked up about.
