We’re heading to Portland Oregon for the annual retro gaming expo. I’m sharing highlights from my weekend also diving into the current state of game collecting. See the prices for games and hardware, both the expensive stuff…and some of the good deals. Plus I ask the vendors what is hot right now.

@housethemous - yeah..... they all aren't making that kind of money. I collect comics, and it's the same scheme. Games/comic prices are over inflated because the seller can and will do it. A lot hype throen in the mix, and a bit of FOMO, lol. A lot of these folks can't sell the items, unless they find that one person that doesn't care about over spending on the item in question.

Well somebody from another booth came up and told me they had one for 1k and it sold. They said mine was underpriced...and just to be fair, this was the only item I have priced this high. All my other stuff was priced pretty cheap. I had a sealed Vita game priced at 30.00, and a guy had just paid 70.00 for the same title, they were so bummed.

The games are literally cheaper than they used to be WITHOUT even considering inflation for more than 90% of games. What are you guys smoking? Millions of really good games under original market price by multiples. In 1990 games sold for $60 and in today's dollars that's > $200 each. Is it only ok if your parents waste your money, so now you're angry you have to pay $30 USD vs $200 in today's money for the average game on Genesis/SNES/etc? Have you ever considered that you shouldn't buy games if you don't have money? Or at least don't hoarde them and think about what you want. Anyone trying to hoarde 500 games in 1991 would also have a problem with average salary.

I hate how retro games got expensive nowadays. Back then, during the PS3/Xbox 360/Wii era, you were able to buy a used NES game for less than $20. I remember during middle school, my cousin bought ten used Nintendo 64 games for $40 at our local game store. Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Smash Bros., Mario Kart 64, Banjo-Kazooie, and Conker's were amongst them! Nowadays, those games are sold about $80 or $1,000. It's outrageous!

I honestly don't understand why people want to spend huge amount of moneys on a crappy game that they'll never play. Especially since it's too nisch to be a good deal for speculation. PS3 is for sure one of the systems to collect for now. But PS4 is almost in the same ballpark and one year or older PS5 games can many times be had for like five bucks too. Why pay full price for a digital download when you can have the same game for less than 20 bucks physical? * It just doesn't make sense to do digital download because you can not even trade it later. It's just such a poor deal.

Portland reorganized one of their food truck blocks into into a court instead of facing the street, which means they have proper benches, proper lighting after dark, a stage for live music, they even serve alcohol (cider and ipas, very Pacific Northwest) since it's not on the street. Portland’s food truck scene is pretty much the best I’ve ever seen in the US - haven’t been to Austin, though. For breakfast I went to Pine State Biscuits, just a few blocks north of the convention center and had a kickass breakfast sandwich. Everybody in the store was wearing a conference badge, and they all cleared out the second the conference doors opened.

I also got to talk to the actors that were there this year and basically talked with all of them on Sunday. I told many at the show that PRGE needs to expand at least one more day and many do agree it needs another day added as Friday - Sunday is not enough time to do everything and go to panels. Which sadly I did not go to any panels this year. I was honestly over whelmed but in a good way. :)

The prices are crazy, I will not pay 1000 dollars for hagane, actually this one was one of the last retro games I buyed, got the super famicom version in Amazon Japan for around 60 dollars. Kelsey showing up made me almost do a spit take, unintentionally hilarious at how bone-shatteringly exhausted she looked from setting up, travel etc. I hope she had a crate of coffee and those energy drinks behind her.

Im glad Ive modded most of my consoles to be able to run ROMs/burned CDs in order to still enjoy the hardware without having to go hunt anymore. Never feel guilty for emulating and overpriced retro game!

I get that that game boy was sealed but $7000 for a Pokémon gameboy that must have sold in the hundreds of thousands? I had to sell nearly my entire collection last year and I can’t fathom having to buy it back now.

With vinyl theirs ton of reissue to get people to enjoy the product more affordable with video games we only have companies like LFG and VGP making older reprints for desirable games.

I recently got back into collecting retro consoles and games, and was gobsmacked at how much the prices had gone up. Remember not 10 years ago, I was able to get an N64, Mega Drive, and NES boxed for like £40-50 each.. these days you're looking at over £100 on the lower end.

Only the whales are in the market now. It's been ruined and all of the prices are artificial. I can still occasionally find something, but it's never from a reseller. Maybe once a month I'll find a single title that hasn't been gouged through the roof. It's probably closer to once a season though. I'm essentially done, and though it's interesting seeing these old games, all I get to do is watch them on videos.

Thanks to your vids I got into the habit of looking at the gen that had just passed and filling my boots. I was able to grab ps2 gems like silent hill 2 and 3 as well as haunting grounds and persona 4 with the soundtrack for £15 a piece. My current target is some of the more unique ps4 games I missed like concrete genie. Great vid!

I don’t understand how games keep rising in price like they do. I bought Silent Hill 3 four years ago complete with soundtrack for $25 on eBay. Now it goes for almost $300. I don’t feel guilty one bit about emulating retro games. The entire industry is just sad now. Developers only care about turning record profits over making fun games and consumers just want to scalp and flip everything
