I feel like I was very fortunate to break in when I did. I entered the industry back in 2007, long time ago. Back then I had dozens of SWE interviews with only one internship of experience. Everything you needed for the job was done in college, nowadays they want you to have 5 years experience, projects you started independently, a compendium. It really sucks for you new guys, the market is really over-saturated at the moment, hopefully some of you can break in soon, it's a great career.

Hello, could you please provide me with additional evidence that the job market is oversaturated? I am confused because there is conflicting information out there. Some sources claim that there is a shortage of jobs, while others argue that the market is oversaturated. I believe it's better to focus on pursuing a career that you are interested in and good at, rather than simply relying on what others say or what we read in articles.

@@sadephillips9645 There is no cause to fear about the current state of the job market. Do your honest part, be open to new ideas, concepts and other humans, take on hard problems, smile to your cats and neighbours, enter software with the entrepreneurial mindset, go hard and never back down. Thank me latter! Enjoy your day Hero!

I think part of this was caused by the constant news about the shortage of qualified candidates during the hiring bubble. Anytime that happens in such a cyclical job market like SWE you are going to end up with a lot of the people that just recently jumped on the bandwagon getting left behind when the bubble bursts. That is what we are seeing here. Its not as much of a risk for the people that have a decent amount of experience but all of the bootcamp grads are getting a rude awakening.

Thank you KC, I was laid off in January 2023 with around 5 years experience and I did not get an internal job after going up for it. It took me 3 months to find a job, I thought there was something wrong with me but I was job searching in one of the worst job markets in a while and was internalizing it. Thank you for laying out the data. I have been scared of being homeless because of limited family. I found my dream job though so wishing everyone a easier time and their dream job.

I broke into swe in 2019. It was much easier to get a job without experience back then than getting a job with 5 years experience now. Companies are just not hiring it definitely a contractionary period. Its not impossible but it will take a quite a bit of effort.

i come from a bootcamp background and have been trying to break in for some time now, done everything under the sun you can think of and its not come. Also watched a gall in networking talk about how most "software jobs" you see are not real and only listing to show "growth" to the share holders. So its very possible this trend we are seeing is just companies inflating growth.

This was a really interesting video, Im a UK based full stack dev (with just under 2 years experience) and I was let go from my last dev job at the end of October this year, sitting on around 380 applications now. I've had two 2nd stage interview and 4 1st stage interviews, but have yet to get anymore in the last 2 weeks (as to be expected with the Xmas break). I feel like europe mimics the US in terms of job market, so hopefully it will bounce back. I graduated in december of 2022 and had my first job 6 months before that, but it was with a startup and it bled money, as a result i was let go, my second position was filled due to a need of a Dev asap, and i got hired within a month of leaving my last job, but now this have gotten MUCH slower.

In one department of software dev, it's almost +100% new positions announced via an internal email past week. It corresponds to 30 engineers, I am in a niche software tech, it's a lot for us, we aren't even sure we could fill those position by 2024 because they are so few graduates with this specific knowledge.

To compare and make predictions, you also need data from your region. The US demographic pyramid is very stable, however, the same doesn't need to work for the state of Texas or the state of Montana. In many countries and regions, the population gets older. It means the whole industries have been dramatically changing.

What hurts a lot for me was that I did manage to get hired as an associate SWE at a company in 2022, but because of security clearances, I was put on wait for my actual starting date. Weeks became months, months soon became a year, and as it turns out! Some of the processes for the clearances were on hold because that entire time, I wasn't even matched for a program yet! It was such a painful realization that I wasn't at all safe from terrible market, I was just another victim of it. So I'm back on that grind again. This video hardly addresses entry level jobs. Even if entry level jobs open up, people who graduated in dec 22 or may 23 will most likely be questioned about the gap in between. They probably won’t even be eligible to apply, just like we aren’t eligible to apply to internships. And in your other video, the only explanation to juniors was, “juniors take time to gain expertise, so it’s better to hire 1 senior instead of training 4 juniors”. But what are juniors supposed to do with that answer? It’s like saying, entry level devs cannot get a job if they don’t already have a job.

You will have to build experience on your own with or without a dev role. I’ve sat in a few cybersecurity interviews and I’ll say the ones that were able to work on home projects like segmenting their home network, interning for a small company or helping put security in place for a mom and pop shop have went a lot further than those same entry level devs without that experience. If no one gives you the opportunity, you have to go out yourself to get it. Constantly bring value to the table with or without a company’s approval. That’s how you will stand out
@justintruong3367

I wouldn't say that people who graduated in Dec 22 or May 23 wouldn't be eligible to apply. I was able to get a number of interviews November and December and made it to the final round for 2 different companies, one that required 2 years of experience and one that was entry level. The majority of the companies I've gotten to interview with recently weren't surprised that I had a gap and mostly knew about how difficult the current job market was and were understanding. I agree with what @Howtosurviveamerica commented about needing to have a good project or two to showcase that you haven't just been sitting there since graduating and not only relying on your degree. Cause there's a lot of people that fall into that category and it doesn't make sense to consider those sort of people versus people that went out and learned a tech stack on their own regardless and have been consistently self-learning since graduating from a business perspective. If a person graduated a year ago but doesn't have any projects to speak of, then it's honestly a red flag. College just teaches you the basics and gives you a foundation, if you can't create something at least worth looking at since graduating 6 months to 1 year ago how is a senior dev supposed to trust that you can handle working with them?

The fact that there is already an excessive amount of demand awaiting its absorption, despite how everyone is frightened and calling the crash, is another reason why it is less likely to occur that way. 2008 saw no one, at least not the broad public, making this forecast, as I'll explain below. The ownership rate was noted to have peaked in 2004 in the other comment. Having previously peaked in the second quarter of 2020, we are currently at the median level. Between 2008 and 2012, it dropped by 3%, and by the second quarter of 2020, it had dropped from 68 to 65.

I wholeheartedly concur, which is why I appreciate giving an investment coach the power of decision-making. Given their specialized expertise and education, as well as the fact that each and every one of their skills is centered on harnessing risk for its asymmetrical potential and controlling it as a buffer against certain unfavorable developments, it is practically impossible for them to underperform. This is definitely a potential interest rate recession. It is definitely a depression for tech workers. I would posit another path, if interest rates remain high. Growth will be limited. The federal government is also borrowing hard, and that is also hurting interest rates. If the Federal Government wasn't spending, we would be in recession right now. So the other path, assuming Biden wins (which is likely). Would be slow growth (except in government), possible recession. Either way, it is a malaise for workers trying to get out of low paying jobs. Housing affordability is at all time lows. So either homes prices fall or interest rates fall. Either way, it could lead to a banking crash if it happens too quickly. If Trump wins, yes he will turn on the oil spigot. He will cut federal spending (or at least talk about it, if he can't). That path would be better for industries that can only grow on cheap capital. For example: New housing, R&D efforts (tech). Biden could take steps, in line with his administration. One would be to offer discounts for companies which enact and expand work from home. This would drop fuel prices. It would not take much, but 2% inflation rate, would force the fed to cut the discount rate.

I think it would be more realistic to watch out for 2024. This year can really make or break the tech job market. If bets on GenAI will become positive, it can really dent the overall market. Also, startups like 8090 can really impact the enterprise software market if that gamble on GenAI will start to see some success. And yes, I can see some cold emails from recruiters every week, better than 2022.

Unemployment in general was high in 2008, but in tech, it was much worse in 2001. Things are going to snap back, but the wild card is how AI is going to affect software engineering jobs.

And in my career fair most of people looking for jobs are CS majors and only 2 out of hundreds of companies recruiting software related jobs, and that’s Engineering Career Fair BTW.. it’s worse than last fall and 2023 spring…

KC, do they weed out recruiters from the number of job ads? A lot of recruiters were also laid off. The small rise you are seeing could be a "Dead Cat Bounce". And if they are not weeding out recruiters. Any small rise you are seeing could be because recruiters are posting the same job. Further, even if they do, the tools they use might (very likely) NOT detect variation in the posting of the same job, or in cases where recruiting agencies mistakenly say "We are hiring urgently..." Giving the impression it is a direct hire.

The bubble is for programmers or software development - Learn hardware or become a Systems Admin - System Engineer - Infrastructure jobs are all we hire - We don't need programmers we need people who understand hardware and permissions or networks - SQL database - Linux. I work for a billion dollar corporation we have two programmers.......I think we have about Fifty infrastructure guys and hiring more.

The reason there aren’t more hardware people is because the work sucks and it pays less. If there was really a demand for hardware guys, we’d see companies willing to pay more.

I'm not sure how the unemployment data from 2000/08 compares to this current era. It shows how many _in the field_ are unemployed. Given the general state of the economy, senior developers are understandably very keen on keeping their job, especially those who have worked in the industry through the three crisis of 2020, 2008 and 2000. The spike in 2020 is indicative of the massive wave of layoffs by companies in order to cut cost, but obviously after the economy started recovering we saw an increase in job openings in 2022, to account for that lost labor. But how many of those openings were entry-level? I don't think that many. I believe those who say it's not that bad as before are looking at the past through their own experiences of being an entry-level developer trying to get in the field and competing against senior developers who are also unemployed. Nowadays though, not only do entry-level developers are competing with seniors, but also the startup boom is long over, tech giants and their apps hold a monopoly, and AI is on the rise. Remember the famous "learn to code" advice journalists would say? It's practically pointless now - and to think we all thought it was going to be truck drivers and blue-collar workers who would be jobless...

I HATE those bootcamp "job" postings. My school has those on their handshake career site sometimes, and they shouldn't even be there. I also don't care much for handshake. It has much less user-friendly functionality than the previous vendor career site the school used. Why does the tech always seem to get worse instead of better for things like that?

Does indie deving, open source, and hackathons count as experience because I can't get no entry. I been studying CS for 4 years and can't finish due to catastrophic reasons. I didn't got internship long story. I have some few certs intro courses in cybersecurity and networking. I have developed mobile apps, 3D games, IoT, some basic websites, joined multiple hackathons including one from NASA, and about AI/ML, been talking to people in the field how work is. Im almost 23 in 3 months and still no job, no home, not many friends irl, degrading mental health. Rn I need some few rest to sort out some documents and recover from burn out. Life unfair bruh. Maybe even developed anger issues.

I searched an apprenticeship in Germany for SWE after finishing highschool were i had the basics of Java and SQlite. The sad thing is that my IT teacher watched over my Application and said everything is perfecet. From 70 application i got just 2 interviews. The sad thing is, all this happened even though I have a scholarship for students without academic backgrounds in the family. In addition, the career counselor at the job center said that others were accepted even though my application was the best lol. In one of the interviews, they told me that I should apply for apprenticeship again when I had enough work experience. How am I supposed to have enough work experience after high school to apply for an apprenticeship as an SWE where I get 600 euros a month during the apprenticeship huh?

2 interviews from 70 applications is actually a pretty good ratio. I’d keep pumping out applications. It’s a less than ideal situation, but your first work experience is the hardest. Every job search after this will be easier.
