My brothers and I always listened and sang their songs. We had a group for a while and did a little traveling to sing at different places. The Statlers were the reason why we started singing in the first place. I will Always love and admire each one of them and their music for as long as I live.

I'll be 56 years old in April. My Mom was born and raised in Tennessee and I grew up listening to The Statler Brothers. To this day they are my all time favorite when it comes to Gospel Music. I don't see that ever changing. I love all their music, and your dedication song was just perfect. Every time I hear their music, it takes me back to being a kid when my Mom and Dad would get all dressed up and go to either the Moose Lodge or the American Legion to go dancing. I miss my folks every day, and I know you boys know that feeling. Thanks so much for sharing! ~ APRIL LIPKE

Do your research...Lew didn't leave because he thought he could do better without them. He left because he was very ill with Crohn's Disease. Stress plays a huge role in this disease...I know because I also suffer with Crohn's Disease...and I do mean SUFFER!!! He was in so much pain for so long, then had surgery that helped for a while. Then this horrible illness resurfaced, as it always does, and, in the end, it's what took his life at such a young age.

To Dukeof Ed. You're dead wrong. Lew left the group because of his illness, not because he thought he was better. He had surgery whic h improved his health to the point he made a comeback as a solo artist. Then his he alth took a turn for the wors e & he died August 15, 1990 @ the age of 52.

I’m so very sad to learn of Harold’s passing. I’m sure he’s in a better place and no doubt in the presence of Jesus, and he won’t have anymore pain, so I’m happy for him in that respect, but it’s still hard saying goodbye to good people and great talents. God bless you Harold. We really miss you.

It's not often that a quartet can maintain a successful career, with just one personnel change, with Jimmy Fortune replacing the ailing Lew Dewitt in the early eighties. Phil, Don, and Harold kept the group going for over 30 years though.

Dukeof Ed, Lew left due to his battle with Crohn's Disease in the early '80s. It's true that after a few years of rest, he did begin to record as a solo performer, but he never thought "he could do better without them," as you put it. Where did you get such an asinine notion? Lew died from heart and kidney disease in 1990. Good for Lew for getting to enjoy a few retirement years before succumbing to his illness. Forget Dukeof Ed.

I don't know what to say. I'm still in shock at the news that Harold Reid has passed away. It only seems a short while ago that I saw them in their hometown, and before that met Lew at a high school in Waynesboro, Va. Loved their tv show. Though I love them all, Harold has always been my favorite. I feel like I've lost a close personal friend. Prayers and condolences to Don, Brenda, all the kids, and their other "brothers" Phil and Jimmy. May God bless you all.

I am so saddened by this. In the past month we have lost Kenny Rogers, Joe Diffie and now Harold Reid. I have grown up listening to all of them and in my opinion, they are the best generation in true country music. There will never be another group like the Statler Brothers.

I completely agree with you Paula, I too SUFFER from Crohn's disease, it's a Horrible, Excruciating Painful and very disabling (to some degree) disease to have, And your also right about the stress, When I am stressed it really rears it's ugly head then! Poor Lew had such a battle with this disease, I sure wish they could find a cure for it, hopefully someday they will and we won't suffer with it any longer. God bless and take care ♥♥

@@jeanjones1846 No one ever would have heard of Jimmy Fortune had it not been for Lew DeWitt. Lew discovered Jimmy performing at a ski lodge in the early '80s and recommended him to the other Statlers as his replacement when he had to take a temporary leave of absence (later permanent) from the group due to illness. In the mid '60s, Lew is the one who put the group on the map with his composition "Flowers on the Wall."
